Go Beyond Sound

Ongoing pursuit of piano quality that remains more than a step ahead

Motivated by a desire to extend the pleasure of playing a musical instrument to as many people

as possible, CASIO developed the first digital piano in 1986. Through the years since, we have

consistently led the way in forwarding the evolution of the digital piano. This has meant pursuing

sound quality that is virtually indistinguishable from an acoustic piano’s, while building on the

convenience and playing pleasure unique to digital instruments.

In 2012, CASIO developed a new sound source system that has carried sound quality several

steps ahead of that produced by ordinary digital pianos. Determined to satisfy users’ yearning for

a grand piano experience, CASIO continues to define the future of the digital piano.

Digital Technologies, Acoustic Sound

Production of optimal resonance while playing

with advanced digital technologies

One of the chief attractions of the acoustic piano is its ability

to produce countless subtle changes in tonal reverberation in

response to delicate adjustments of the pianist’s touch.

CASIO’s newly developed sound source faithfully reproduces

these nuanced tonal variations unique to the piano. Not only

the lingering reverberation from the time the sound starts

until it dies away, but also the rich resonance of strings

reverberating together, can be reproduced depending on the

force with which the keys are struck. CASIO digital pianos

enable pianists to play the same piece of music in

innumerable styles, depending on their intended effect.

Although digital, the pianos’ expressive power is on par with

that of acoustic pianos. The optimal resonance produced by

innovative LSI technologies proprietary to CASIO promises to

captivate pianists around the world.

The sound volume and quality change when the lid on a grand piano is raised or lowered. The “Lid Simulator” reproduces the same acoustic effects for enhanced enjoyment possible with a digital piano. The acoustic effects of opening and closing the lid are simulated in fine detail. The piano sound you are seeking as you play is always available for your enjoyment by selecting the degree to which the lid is raised or lowered.

The deep, beautiful resonance resulting from the use of damper pedals is also reproduced naturally by a stereo resonance simulator installed on all 88 keys, an approach that differs from conventional simulated reproduction employing effect processing. The attention to detail goes so far as to simulate the resonance created by the lifting of the dampers themselves when the pedals are pressed. A continuously variable system* has been adopted for the damper pedals, moreover, reproducing even the subtle changes in reverberation that occur in response to the delicate pressures exerted by partial pedal operation. This enables players to employ pedal operation to achieve gracefully expressive performances.

The sound produced by an acoustic piano is not only the sound associated with the keys that touched. Other strings with a frequency close to those producing the sounds resonate as well, adding their sound to give the music a uniquely rich resonance. In ordinary digital pianos, this string resonance effect is reproduced virtually with strings. The Multi-dimensional Morphing AiR sound source takes a different approach, however, by adopting a “string resonance” system incorporating a stereo resonance simulator for all 88 keys for the first a time in a digital piano. The resonance of the 88 keys is reproduced completely and naturally. The resonance realized by playing a single tone is differentiated from that realized by playing a chord to reproduce the resulting variations in resonance in a natural manner. This even enables players to achieve varying resonances, controlling them at will by the strength of their touch, and thus to realize performances with the unique expressiveness of an acoustic piano.

More natural waveform data sampling with a higher capacity memory

The acoustic level achieved by a digital piano is determined by the capacity of the memory that stores sounds after sampling. A new high-capacity memory, boasting a capacity in excess of approximately three times our previous models (converted linearly), is installed for the Multi-dimensional Morphing AiR sound source. The waveform data sampling capacity has increased dramatically, enabling natural reproduction of the delicate changes in waveforms associated with concert grand pianos. The sound quality and resonance have achieved astonishing evolution, realizing an ability to produce simultaneous sounds comprising up to 256 tones in high-end models (PX-850, AP-650M, AP-450).

Reproduced sound quality closely approaching the original sound [Lossless Audio Compression*]

Digital pianos normally compress and record sound waveform data in their built-in memory. This data is then expanded and played back when recalled. As in the case of compressed audio data such as MP3, therefore, the played-back sound simply cannot avoid deterioration with respect to the original sound. But the advanced Lossless Audio Compression technology adopted for CASIO’s Multi-dimensional Morphing AiR sound source has made it possible to reproduce sounds without this deterioration of the original sound quality. This permits enjoyment of musical performances with acoustics that are immeasurably closer to natural piano sounds.

Every model is equipped with an equalizer that compensates output sounds optimally to resonate more naturally. Players can arrange sounds for enhanced listening pleasure.

・ Playing the C note (single tone)

・ Playing the C, E and G notes (chord)

Playing C stimulates resonance among the open strings in the tremble section.

Playing C, E and G causes both these notes and the open strings in the tremble section to resonate.

he characteristics of CASIO’s newly developed Multi-dimensional Morphing AiR* Sound Source reflect thorough attention to detail in expressing the rich, resonating tones inherent to the piano. The capacity of the installed memory has been expanded to achieve a longer sampling duration and enhanced waveform data quality. The temporal changes in tone that create sound you would expect only from a piano, beginning with the initial sound and leading into a beautiful extension until the sound eventually vanishes, are reproduced naturally. Even the length of the reverberation can be controlled at will by the player by adjustments in touch, as with an acoustic piano. Seamless variations that respond continuously to the power behind each stroke, not only in terms of volume but also in terms of the nuances of the sound itself, range from a fine, gentle ppp (pianississimo) to an intense, powerful fff (fortississimo). All 88 keys incorporate a stereo resonance simulator, moreover, that reproduces the string sounds of a grand piano remarkably realistically. The pleasure

of listening to acoustic changes can be obtained by opening the grand piano-like lid installed on high-end models (PX-850, AP-650M, AP-450), which place a particular focus on sound output quality. These

developments represent an unprecedented evolution of the digital piano’s expressive power in the areas of both sound and resonance.

● Identical tonal ranges can be set to the right and left of center on the keyboard. This Duet Mode is convenient when two players, such as a parent and child or a teacher and student, are practicing together.

● The PX-850, PX-750, PX-150, AP-450 and AP-250 are equipped with three “grand piano” mode buttons: “Mellow” producing a warm, rounded sound; “Bright” producing a bright, clear sound; and “Variation” producing a quiet but easily audible sound suitable for home practice. Players can select the mode to match the music they intend to play or their personal preference.

● The PX350M and AP-650M feature a Tone Select button that makes it easy to choose a tone from the abundant available selection.

● The Metronome Function and Recording Function come in handy when practicing the piano.

The difference between the sound structures of a grand piano and a digital piano appears as a difference in timing, from the moment the instrument is played until the sound is audible. The new Tri-sensor Scaling Hammer Action Keyboard II responds by incorporating a system with three sensors that detect touches of the keys sequentially. The time between detection of a key touch and sound production varies with the speed of the key touch, naturally reproducing the sounding timing of a grand piano. Also as in a grand piano, moreover, the action mechanism relies solely on the weight of the hammer, with absolutely no springs employed, thus providing both a definite playing response and a smooth touch. It is characteristic of acoustic pianos that the keys become progressively heavier as the sound becomes lower, and that the keys become progressively lighter as the sound becomes higher.

The sizes of the hammers that strike the strings differ among the various key blocks in a grand piano. The sounding timing consequently varies subtly, even when keys are struck with the same strength. The new keyboard system simulates these differences in sounding timing among different keys. The result is accurate reproduction of sounding timing identical to that of a grand piano.

The lightweight, compact body has been refined further to enhance PRIVIA’s functional beauty. The original external styling presents a sharp, slim-lined image possible only with electronic instruments. Other attractive features include a selection of colors to match any home interior. The lineup even includes keyboard-style models that can be played on a tabletop or transported to another venue for virtually unlimited playing freedom.

CELVIANO was conceived and developed with unprecedented attention to such details as creation of a substantial body structure with a luxurious feel based on a design concept adopted from the elegant form of a grand piano. The wood surface exudes a warm ambience. The rich body coloring has been chosen for its lasting appeal and its superior ability to coordinate with virtually any refined interior.

The sound of a piano performance can be recorded in digital format on USB flash memory using a port on the piano body. This not only permits playback or recorded performances, but the recordings can also be used to accompany a pianist during performances. The digital sound data can also be played back on a PC using standard audio file playback software.

The lengths of the reverberations and expressions a piano produces vary depending on the speed at which players release their fingers after touching the keys. The new keyboard system incorporates a Key Off Simulator that reproduces these nuances resulting from key release naturally. Authentic reverberations that feel just like those of a grand piano are expressed as a result.
