Ray Anthony has been called charismatic and engaging, and he makes an instant connec-tion with his audience as he portrays the great Ritchie Valens. Whether it is in Las Vegas or elsewhere, Ray has the whole audience sing-ing to “Oh Donna” and other Valens songs like “That’s My Little Susie” and “Come On, Let’s Go,” and of course, the ever-popular “La Bam-ba”.

Although the real Ritchie Valens was killed in the same 1959 plane crash that also took the lives of Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper, and which, some say, marked the day the music died, Ray Anthony’s tribute honorably captures the looks, music and con-nectivity of Mr. Valens.

Come experience Ray Anthony as Ritchie Valens at Isleta Resort & Casino on July 26. For more infor-mation, see www.isleta.com

We all know where the gambling action is, right? Las Vegas, Nevada, at one end of the country, Atlantic City, New Jersey, at the other. But what we may not know is that’s only about a tenth of the story. In actuality, the United States is home to a number of gambling opera-tions, tribal and non-tribal, which rake in millions of dol-lars of tax revenue for their respective states each year.

Recently, CNBC online published a list of the top 13 states that raised the most revenue from commercial gambling in 2012. Because the National Indian Gam-bling Association does not publish state-by-state num-bers, this list does not include tribal gaming operations.

However, combined revenue for these venues reached around $27 billion for 2013, which, if taken into consider-ation, would make California and Connecticut the two top gambling markets in the US.

Still, the growing number of non-tribal gambling oper-ations is surprising, with the top 13 states as follows:

13. Colorado12. West Virginia11. Michigan10. Iowa 9. Illinois 8. Missouri 7. New York 6. Mississippi 5. Louisiana 4. Indiana 3. New Jersey 2. Pennsylvania 1. Nevada

There is nothing like a good myth to add zest to the history of humankind, and the myths that surround gambling are some of the most colorful.

For starters, did you know that Wild Bill Hickok wasn’t a Bill at all? His first name was James, and he was ter-ribly proficient with both a six-gun and a shotgun. Wild Willie had an explosive tem-

per and wasn’t above mak-ing moves that were not in keeping with the law, even while wearing a badge. But brother Bill never put the citizens he was sworn to pro-tect in harm’s way.

As for his love life, it al-ways seems to be bound up to one woman, Martha Can-nary, or as she was better known: Calamity Jane. This woman could rope, ride,

track down runaway jail-birds, drink like a fish, and, like Hickok, was deadly ac-curate with revolver or shot-gun. Her one weakness was that she had this thing for Wild Bill.

Unfortunately, Wild Bill only liked Jane as a friend—which is the worst thing a woman in heat wants to hear from the frontiersman of her dreams.

Regardless, her passion was doomed. Because we all know what happened: while playing poker in a saloon in Deadwood, South Dakota, the 39-year-old Wild Bill Hickok was shot dead with a bullet to the back of the head by Jack McCall, earning the bastard enduring notoriety as the coward not only of the county but of the century.

McCall, who was a rela-tive youngster at the age of 24, later testified that he shot Hickok because he believed Wild Bill had cheated him out of a quarter in a poker game. Seven months later, McCall got his just desserts: he was convicted of murder-ing Hickok and summarily hanged.

But what of Ms. Calam-ity? Get this: she died 27 years to the day of Hickok’s death, August 2, 1903. Fif-ty-one years old when she passed, she did in the end get to spend eternity with Wild Bill. She was granted her dy-ing wish and buried next to the object of her lifelong un-requited love.

To tie the ribbon on this story and answer the two most frequently asked ques-tions regarding Wild Bill’s death: what was the game, and what was Bill holding? He was playing five-card draw and was holding four cards, two black aces and two black eights. Bill had discarded one card from his two-pair hand and was hop-ing to catch a third ace or eight.

And that is why, to this day, any player holding a pair of black aces and black eights is said to be holding “A dead man’s hand.”

What would you do if you were told you had cancer? Cry, curl up in a ball, curse the fates? Or would you, like a New Jersey retiree who the press calls

Harry W., head out for a little bit of fun before starting treatment?

A couple weeks after receiving the bad news, Harry headed to Harrah’s

Park Palace in Atlantic City, New Jer-sey, with $20 set aside to wager on the slots. Moving from machine to ma-chine, Harry eventually racked up a tidy sum of $415, not bad for about 20 minutes of work.

Then he decided to try his luck at one more spin and pulled the lever on an IGT Wheel of Fortune slot. Lights flashed, bells whistled, and a neighbor-ing player gave the bewildered Harry the astonishing news: Harry, it seems, had just won a whopping $1,055,732.

When the new millionaire returned home to his wife, the two decided to use the jackpot to re-build the home they lost in Hurricane Sandy. With the money they have left, the couple plans to invest some of it and give some of it to family members in need.

And while Harry has not yet told the

press what kind of cancer he has been diagnosed with, nor does he know his prognosis, the jackpot will surely al-low him to live worry-free while going through treatment and, hopefully, a full recovery.

Ted NugentFriday, July 4 at 8pm

When Detroit native Ted Nugent first burst onto the hard rock music scene in the late 1960s as lead guitarist for The Amboy Dukes, it was clear he was going places. With his loud and proud persona, powerful voice, and blistering guitar licks, he became known as the Motor City Mad-man, cementing that reputation with a solo career that produced some of the most rol-licking anthems of the genre.

In 1989 Nugent formed the super group Damn Yankees with former members of Night Ranger and Styx. A year later their album by the same name went multi-platinum in the U.S., no doubt in large part to the smash hit power ballad “High Enough.”

To date, Nugent has released more than 34 albums, has sold a total of 30 million records, and still tours regularly. Songs

like “Catch Scratch Fever,” “Free For All,” “Stranglehold,” and “Wango Tango” remain staples of hard rock music stations around the world.

Yet in spite of this wild man reputation, Nugent, who lives on a ranch in his home state of Michigan, has remained refresh-ingly immune to the excesses of the typi-cal rock and roll lifestyle. Vigilantly an-ti-drug and anti-alcohol, he is a devoted father of eight children and has been mar-ried to his second wife, Shemane Deziel, for 25 years.

One thing is certain: Ted Nugent remains a fixture on the hard rock music scene, still able to draw crowds and guaranteed to get you pumping your fists and banging your head. Come experience rock legend Ted Nugent at Camel Rock Casino on Friday, July 4 at 8pm. Doors open at 7pm.

Is it possible for computer programs to control the speed of each reel on a slot machine?

Slot and video poker ma-chines have many play charac-teristics and settings. Among them are the speed at which cards are dealt or the reels spun. On many video poker games, there is a touch screen function that allows guests to select the speed at which they feel com-fortable playing. When such a function is unavailable, as it is on most slots, the properties are set internally.

Players will encounter tra-ditional spinning reel slots on which decisions are reached faster than others. This charac-teristic has no impact whatso-ever on the payback percentage of the game. The same outcome would occur had the reels spun slower.

What faster play does affect, however, is a player’s bankroll. The faster you play, the more money you bet. The more mon-ey you bet within a given time frame, the more your bankroll becomes vulnerable to the re-lentless “hold” percentage of the machine.

Does using a players card af-fect the performance of a slot machine?

Inserting your players club card in the machine does not in-fluence the performance of the game, how much you win or lose, or whether or not you hit a jackpot. The card reader does not communicate with the game itself but rather with a database operated and managed by the property’s marketing division.

Statistics on how often you visit, what games you play, how much you typically wager, what denomination you play, and

how long you stay are tabulated to create a player profile upon which direct mail offers and communications are based.

Using a card can only help you derive more value from your casino outings, especially by earning points for your play that can be redeemed for cash or comps. There is no doubt players clubs are self-serving for the casinos, but there is a give-and-take component that makes them beneficial to guests as well.

How do you determine the payout for video poker ma-chines?

The individual payback per-centages of traditional spinning reel and video slots are proprie-tary information, but video pok-er machines are a different ball game. The payback percentages of video poker machines are based on a mathematical for-mula using information from the game’s pay table, which is in clear public view.

The standard way to deter-mine a video poker game’s pay-back percentage is to make a calculation based on the number of coins paid back for each one wagered for a full house and a flush. For example, a Double-Double Bonus game that pays nine-coins-to-one for a full house and five-coins-to-one for a flush is a “9/5” game that pays 97.87 percent.

The best source for finding video poker game payback per-centages is www.videopoker.com. Click “Learn” in the top part of the home page banner, and then click “Pay Tables” in the drop down menu. You’ll find the percentages for every game and every available pay table.

Given this first round card situation, I asked you in my last column: 1. how would you bet going into the next round?; and 2. does anything alarm you? I also pointed out that Hi-Lo card counters (like the MIT teams of old) would come up with a zero count here, which is highly inaccurate. The cards are not balanced, as I pointed out. For one thing, there are no aces. And all four 7s were dealt, etc.

Look at graphic #2, which is a small portion of the information provided by my Probability & Imbalances Calculator (available exclusively on www.black-jacktoday.com). There you see that aces now account for more than 11 percent of the deck (the norm is 7.69 percent). By the way, notice that even in this extreme situation, your likelihood of getting an ace is far less than 100 percent, so any system that claims 100 percent accuracy or even close to it in predicting when you might get an ace lies. (Thorp’s Beat The Dealer talked about precision, but his book was written when the game was one deck, dealt to the very bottom—the good old days long gone!)

Hi-Lo players wrongly believe aces overdue situations call for a bet increase (but their counting system wouldn’t tell them that was the case here). Yet my research has proven conclusively that aces overdue situations lower your likeli-hood of winning and benefit the dealer. For one thing, when the dealer gets an ace—which the old school researchers didn’t take into account—they not only trump most everyone sometimes with a blackjack, but their overall busting rate goes down to a puny 8 percent, taking into account all situations where the dealer gets an ace.

My Precision Betting System (introduced in the Third Edition of Cutting Edge Blackjack) also proved that decks low in 7s, 8s and 9s are bad for the player.

When no surrender is allowed, the PI, or Probability Index, is minus-two here, going into the next round. Therefore, taking both of these situations into account, you should lower your bet to the table minimum.

Also cause for alarm? All of the spades have been dealt. This is a symptom of poor shuffling, which almost always spells trouble for most if not all the players at the table. That is, you’re most likely to lose in the long term with this mix of cards.

Also look at graphic #3, another small portion of my Calculator’s number crunching sections, where it shows that low cards (which I define as 2s through 7s) and aces account for 54 percent of the un-dealt mix.

These are the cards that help the dealer avoid busting. Another reason to lower your bet to the minimum allowed. Most players will lose in the next round.

And you can take that to the bank.

Ringo Starr & His All Star Band comes to Sandia Resort & Casino’s Amphitheater on July 9. This appear-ance is just months after Ringo was reunited with fellow former Beatle Paul McCartney at the Grammys this past January, and after he received the prestigious French Medal of Honor award in September 2013, in recogni-tion of his musical and artistic contri-butions.

Ringo received a star on the Hol-lywood Walk Of Fame in 2011, also when he launched a tour with his 11th All Starr Band. And since 2012, Starr

has led his 12th lineup of his All Starr Band. Joining him will be guitarist Steve Lukather, singer Richard Page, multi-instrumentalist Todd Rundgren, and drummer Gregg Bissonette—all of whom have, of course, scored hits in their own right, many of which will be incorporated into the set list.

“I love playing with this band,” says Ringo, “and I can’t wait to get back out and play with them again.” Come hear Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band play at Sandia Resort & Casino on July 9. For more information, see www.sandiacasino.com.

Sandia Resort & Casino welcomes Boston, the iconic classic rock band from the 70s and 80s that rocked the nation with songs like “More Than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” “Rock and Roll Band,” “Don’t Look Back,” and “Amanda.” Centered on guitarist, songwriter, and producer Tom Scholz, the band has sold over 31 million al-bums in the United States, of which 17 million were for their self-titled debut album, one of the best sold de-but albums ever, and 7 million were for their second album, Don’t Look Back.

Joining Boston is Cheap Trick, who

also gained renown in the late 70s as the godfathers of power pop. Their top hits include “I Want You to Want Me,” “Surrender,” and “Dream Po-lice.”

Come see Boston with special guest Cheap Trick at the Sandia Resort & Casino Amphitheater on July 22. For more information, log onto www.san-diacasino.com

One of the themes of Boston’s albums is the presence of a guitar-shaped spaceship, ostensibly a colony ship bearing the city of Boston, with the city’s name emblazoned across the front.

It was supposed to have been an evening of fun for Washington State residents Jim and Betty Lilja. The couple, both in their ’80s and married for 66 years, had just spent the night at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, WA.

But once home, instead of being able to cel-ebrate their win of $500, a man burst in, de-manding their money and threatening to shoot the couple if they didn’t comply.

Then, in a move that Clint Eastwood would likely be proud of, Jim told his would-be assail-ant, “I’m 85-years-old. If you want to shoot, go ahead and shoot.”

For whatever reason, the intruder searched the house instead, allowing the couple time to escape. Once outside, Jim activated the couple’s car alarm and the suspect fled, empty handed.

“Maybe between the two of us we could have taken him down,” Betty said matter-of-factly to a local news station. “I don’t know. But he ain’t going to get my money. I know that.”

Most likely, the intruder followed the Liljas home from the casino. While the police have yet to catch him, he is slender, in his 20s, and took off in a waiting Lexus, which means he likely had an accomplice.

I came home from the bar four hours late last night.

“Where have you been?” screamed my wife.

“I’ve been playing poker with some pals” I said.

“Playing poker with some pals?” she repeated. “Well, you can pack your bags and go!”

“So can you,” I said. “This isn’t our house anymore.”
