The Rio Nambé flows through the Pueblo and eventually feeds into the Rio Grande.

The Pueblo of Nambé (“Nanbe O-Ween-Ge”) is a self-governing sovereign Indian Tribe duly recog-nized by the federal government. In the exercise of its Tribal sovereignty

it remains organized in accordance with Pueblo tradition, continuing to make progress toward self-sufficien-cy through community-based proj-

ects that strengthen the governance of local resources and the ability to exercise control and decision-mak-ing over those resources.

The Pueblo of Nambé opened the doors to its first casino on January 17, 2016, adjacent to its popular Nambé Falls Travel Center north of Santa Fe. Many hybrids of the game of poker have been formulated into house-based table games, but none are nearly as fascinating as the newest version just starting to hit casino floors.

Currently just a handful of properties internationally and in the United States offer Lunar Poker, a table game that allows players for the first time ever to play five-card draw poker against the house. As we go to press, no casinos in New Mexico or Southern Colorado currently offer this exciting new game, but its developer is looking to expand dramatically in 2016—so don’t be surprised to see it pop up at a casino near you soon.

Lunar Poker is multi-dimensional and interactive, with multiple wagering opportunities. It is highly entertaining for a table game and enticing enough for even devotees of the poker room to give it a shot.

There are options for each player to improve their hand, which is played against the dealer. The game features never-before-seen side bets, an instant cash payout bonus, and opportunities for the player to bet on their own hand, other players’ hands, and even the dealer’s hand. The house advantage on the game is 2.31 percent, making it relatively player friendly, especially when compared to most other table games.

First let’s get acquainted with the essentials of Lunar Poker. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck. To get into the game the player is required to place an ante wager along with a super wager equal to or greater than the ante bet. At this time it is possible for the player to place an optional super wager bet on the dealer’s hand, or any of the other player’s hands.

Each player and the dealer are dealt five cards. The dealer turns his or her bottom card face up for everybody at the table to see. After everyone looks at their hand, the dealer will ask anyone if they have won their super wager based on the following pay table:

Four-of-a-kind: 250-to-1; Five face cards: 120-to-1; full house: 100-to-1; flush: 60-to-1; straight: 30-to-1; three-of-a-kind: 8-to-1; ace-king-queen: 5-to-1; five cards same color: 2-to-1.

Also, if a player has a straight flush they will be paid at 200-to-1, according to the instant payout pay table. If the hand happens to be a dealt royal flush, the payout is 1,000-to-1.

Players enter the next phase of the game by deciding whether to fold, play, buy, or draw.

A player folds by placing their five cards face down on the table. The dealer will then collect the losing

ante wager. You stay in the game by placing a bet of two times your ante in the bet box on top of your cards.

The buy option is for players to buy a sixth card with a bet equivalent to their ante. The exchange option is for players to exchange two to five cards, with a bet equivalent to their ante. After all decisions are made, the dealer reveals his or her hand. If it includes a super wager winner, any player who made a super wager bet on the dealer will win according to the pay table.

The dealer must qualify with ace-king or higher for the players’ hands to be settled according to the following structure: If the player’s hand beats the dealer’s hand, the ante is a push. That payoff is one of the prices you pay for the benefits of the game. The raise is paid as follows:

Royal flush: 100-to-1; straight flush: 50-to-1; four-of-a-kind: 20-to-1; full house: 7-to-1; flush: 5-to-1; straight: 4-to-1; three-of-a-kind: 3-to-1; two pair: 2-to-1; pair: even money; ace-King: even money.

If the player ties the dealer, both the ante and raise bets are a push. If the dealer’s hand beats the players’ hand, both the ante and raise are collected by the house.

There’s one other imaginative perk to Lunar Poker. If

a winning hand contains a second winning combination (for example an open-ended straight) the player will be paid for both winning combinations, even if they don’t beat the dealer. The second winning hand must contain at least one card that wasn’t included in the first one.

I got to be honest here: I never saw it coming. When I was in my early 20s, a friend of mine who was a bookie took me to Las Vegas, as in Nevada. For a week I visited almost every casino-ho-tel on the strip, plus three or four old-time joints downtown.

I met casino bosses, pit bosses, mar-keting directors, human resources leaders, data research wizards, dealers, casino hosts, time and space buyers, and promotion gurus. Anyone who had an office or desk, or had to wear a suit, I met.

That was, like, a long time back. When the Tropicana was still the new kid on the block, and Aku Aku was the place to eat—a colorful Polynesian restaurant tucked inside the Stardust, from which you could look out and see Las Vegas Boulevard, known today as “the Strip.”

To me, a pink-cheeked rookie, it was like a trip to the stars, to Venus and Mars. Today, not a week slips by that I don’t daydream about that Vegas ven-ture. But I also realized something just recently, while taking this particular

trip down memory lane: I hadn’t met a single woman in charge during my visit.

I never saw a pit boss wearing a skirt, never saw a gal-pal dealing blackjack, or caught a member of the tender persuasion dealing stud in the poker rooms. In the labyrinth of offices, high in the towers of Vegas casino-hotels, it was a guy-thing—top to bottom.

Which is really strange because the casino industry did a study a few pages back in time to see just who the aver-age casino player was. And you know what? In spite of all the supposed “whales” (industry lingo for big spend-ers—male spenders) dominating the tables and slots, wouldn’t you know it but the average casino patron is a woman of about 52 years old.

Well, said a few of the top-troopers in the industry, looks like we should open our doors and let a few of the la-dies into the wheelhouse.

And so it has come to pass that wom-en are leaving their mark in the casino industry in increasing numbers. Just take a look at our own venues. Ever since gaming was legalized in New Mexico on July 4, 1995, women have

been knocking on the doors to help grow the industry.

One of the first is a name that is like-ly familiar to many people who have long chosen to frequent our state’s gaming establishments. When she first started, Daisy Candelaria was a single mom caring for four children. A San Felipe Pueblo native, Candelaria took the first chance she could to get in the door with the pueblo’s new venture, ushering patrons off—and back on—the courtesy shuttle as they came in from retirement centers and mobile home parks. Then she moved on to ca-sino marketing when she discovered she had a knack for scouting out pro-motional item giveaways, like T-shirts, caps, and ballpoint pens.

From there, she worked her way up to the promotional department until, in early 2015, an opening for a mar-keting director prompted her to as-sume the position in the interim while a nationwide search was underway. But that search ended when it became apparent that during Candelaria’s 20 years of loyal service, she’d obviously mastered all the “right stuff” to run the department. And there she sits today, head of marketing for San Felipe Ca-sino Hollywood, a favorite spot with locals and visitors alike.

Another lady who has paid her dues is Jaci Marx, director of marketing at Isleta Resort & Casino. A true daughter of the Wild West, Marx graduated from the University of South Dakota with a sheepskin in marketing and a yen to get in the game. Her first job out of school was at a hot casino in Deadwood, and from there she joined a group operat-ing several casinos throughout the land. Marx kept learning and growing, moving up through the ranks at every stop. And when it came time for her to settle, she settled on New Mexico and Isleta. Married, with two young ones, Marx juggles her myriad marketing de-cisions with the same ease and savvy she applies to her family life

Not to be overlooked are the many other women excelling in challeng-ing positions with our state’s casinos. Like Petra Nielsen, director of mar-keting for Laguna Development Cor-poration, whose gaming operations include Route 66 Casino and Dancing Eagle Casino. Nielsen came out of the Illinois-Indiana marketplace several years back, arriving first at the Santa Claran Hotel Casino and then moving on to Laguna Development Corpora-tion. Another is Eileen Duffin, market-ing director at Sandia Resort & Casi-no. Duffin’s credentials tell of positive posts throughout the West and North-

west—and solid recommendations from former casino veterans who’ve worked with Duffin at other casinos. So, I won’t hesitate to tell it like it is: The ladies have earned their spots at the top, are here to stay, and New Mexico gaming is better because of it. You can take it to the bank.

The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture summed it up well when they wrote: “Few individuals have symbolized the South in popular culture as directly and indelibly as Charlie Daniels.” With his signature hat and belt buckle, Daniels is a formida-ble onstage presence, his music a compel-ling and distinctive blend of rock, country, bluegrass, blues, and gospel.

Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, Daniels was raised on a rich and varied musical diet. A skilled musician at an early age, he played guitar, fiddle, and mandolin; but as an avid follower of Elvis Presley he actually began his career as a rock and roller. He even wrote a song that was recorded by Elvis in the mid-1960s.

Daniels went on to become an accom-plished session musician in Nashville, Tennessee, and worked with Bob Dylan on several of his albums in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Later that decade, Dan-iels’s solo career took off, thanks to songs like “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South’s Gonna Do It,” and his most fa-mous song, “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.”

In addition to his musical career, Dan-iels has appeared on numerous television shows and has even had parts in a number

of movies. He has been honored by past United States presidents and has received numerous accolades from the music in-dustry. He is a Grammy award winner, an Academy of Country Music Pioneer Award winner, a Gospel Music Associa-tion award winner, and has received mul-tiple awards by the Country Music Asso-ciation, to name just a few. But quite pos-sibly the award that tops all the lists is his 2008 induction as a member of the Grand Ole Opry—his lifelong dream turned real-ity.

As for his reputation, which can at times be controversial, he says: “I used to say, ‘I’m not an outlaw, I’m an outcast.’ When it gets right down to the nitty-gritty, I’ve just tried to be who I am. I’ve never fol-lowed trends or fads. I couldn’t even if I tried. I can’t be anybody but me.”

And that includes being as generous as he is talented. In 2014, he co-founded the Journey Home Project, a nonprofit that helps secure funds to benefit veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

Former New Mexico Secretary of State Dianna Duran was released from a Santa Fe County jail on January 16 after serving a 30-day sentence for using political campaign funds to fund a gambling addiction.

The Associated Press also reported that the 60-year-old Duran, who is from Tularosa, NM, pleaded guilty to felony counts of money laundering and embezzling.

Her ability to use campaign funds for her gambling spree have led to

calls for a major overhaul of New Mexico’s campaign finance and ethics laws.

State probation officials say Duran is required to wear a GPS location monitoring device for at least two years, to help ensure she stays out of New Mexico casinos and race tracks.

As part of her sentencing, Duran must also hand-deliver letters of apology to political donors and talk to school children and civic groups regularly for three years.

Dear Mark: I will be in Las Vegas for Super Bowl Sunday and was wondering where you would rec-ommend that I watch the game—and what kind of games should I be playing?

—Dean M. Regarding your gaming question, Dean, I routinely

recommend the following: playing perfect basic strat-egy at blackjack; making a pass line bet and placing the 6 or 8 on a craps game; finding a video poker machine that offers a decent pay schedule; and trying your hand at Baccarat, where the house advantage is either 1.17 percent when betting the bank hand, or 1.36 percent with a player-hand wager.

As for where to hang out for Super Bowl Sunday, as your social/gambling coordinator I recommend a sports book, sports bar, or a casino-sponsored party. I have been to an actual Super Bowl twice, but at least 20 times “virtually” in the Silver State, and I would take the latter every time. Go early for good seating, especially in a sports book, or plan to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with some inebriated jerk that abandoned his attempt to hit the men’s room during a first-half scoring drive. Yep, it happened to me.

Unfortunately, due to the NFL’s crackdown on throwing Super Bowl parties for profit, most Las Ve-gas casinos just offer FREE Super Bowl party pack-ages for players card members only. (Clearly, Dean, first check where you have a players card.)

Once hosted by former professional players or the

Jägermeister girls, these parties are but another ex-ample of the days of old gone by. Don’t blame the ca-sinos for this one, though, but, instead, this language that pops up at the end of each game: “This telecast is copyrighted by the NFL for the private use of our audi-ence. Any other use of this telecast or any pictures, de-scriptions, or accounts of the game without the NFL’s consent is prohibited.”

Fortunately, Dean, this exempts sports bars. There-fore, even if offering $1 dogs, drafts, and shrimp cock-tails, most restaurants, bars, pubs, etc. have special offers for “Super Sunday,” with some charging an ad-mission fee that usually includes seating, drinks, and food.

Since it’s coming up fast, I would start immediately researching your options. Google “Super Bowl Party Las Vegas 2016” and you will find some all-encom-passing lists. As for betting, nothing gets a better cluck-for-the-buck than a sports wager. The Super Bowl will last at least four hours, and even if you were betting the wagers I initially mentioned, your money will last far longer than at a blackjack table, a craps game, on a

video poker machine, or on a baccarat game. Whenever you place a point-spread, you lay 11 to

win 10. That means if you want to win $10, you have to wager $11, no matter which team you are betting on. If you win, you will collect $21—your $11 wager plus the $10 you just won. This extra dollar commis-sion, also called a vigorish (a.k.a. vig), is the compen-sation taken by the house on every sports bet wagered. Exotic proposition bets vary in price.

You might as well spread a slew of $10 prop bets across the board from any number of individual per-formance props to the color of the Gatorade bath at the end of the game. Oh, and since you’re going to bet the length of the National Anthem, you might as well wa-ger whether the singer flubs, at least, one word of the song. Just think Christina Aguilera and the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV.

My final advice, Dean, is to take heads on the coin toss, and no matter where you watch the game, make it in close proximity to your hotel’s pillow to support your head after a long day, and night, of Super Bowl partying.
