The O’JaysMarch 6 at 7pm

Hailing from Philadelphia, the O’Jays are one of the most popular and long-lived outfits in soul music. Formed in 1958, they rose to the height of their fame in the 1970s, epitomizing what would become known as the Philly sound: smooth, rich harmonies backed

by elaborate arrangements, lush strings, and a touch of contemporary funk.

Between 1972 and 1978, the O’Jays charted with a string of top 10 hits that include “Back Stabbers,” “For the Love of Money,” “I Love Music,” “Use ta Be My Girl,” and the No. 1 hit, “Love Train,” all of which are still mainstays of stations playing R&B and soul music worldwide. Five of the LPs they re-corded during their nearly decade-long hot streak were certified gold; three went platinum.

Come get your groove on with the O’Jays at Isleta Resort & Casino on March 6 at 7pm. For more infor-mation, visit www.isleta.com

Don Williamsthe Gentle GiantFebruary 28 at 7pm

It has been written about Don Williams that if anyone needs proof that music is an international language, they need look no further than this “Gentle Giant” of the country-western genre.

Williams picks his material with discernment for quality and the emo-tions that encapsulate the spectrum of life experience. Hit songs like “I Believe in You” (his 11th No. 1 on the country music charts), “Amanda,” “You’re My Best Friend,” and “Tulsa Time,” evoke a depth and breadth of expe-rience that listeners have taken to heart since Williams first starting playing mu-

sic in the early 1960s.Born and raised in a small town in northwest Texas,

Williams speaks not only to fans who share a similar upbringing but also to those all over the world who appreciate his straightforward simplicity. Wherever he plays, whether Brazil, Britain, Ireland, Africa, Australia, Finland, or Norway, to name just a few, he draws crowds. And they’re sure to be in atten-dance when Williams plays at Isleta Resort & Casino on February 28 at 7pm. For more information, visit www.isleta.com

The opportunity to turn a toothpick bankroll into a lumberyard of green-backs both at casinos and through state-sanctioned lotteries has never been bet-ter. Yet for many decades, horse racing was about the only way you could le-gally place a bet in this country. In fact, the “sport of kings” reigned supreme as the entertainment of choice for wager-ing types, long before the popularity of casino gambling, state-sanctioned lot-teries, Internet wagering, or office-run betting pools for college and pro sports.

Racetrack grandstands in major cities were filled to overflowing on weekends and holidays, and daily newspapers sent “beat” reporters to cover the action. Re-sults were published twice a day: the af-ternoon papers printed the “Daily Dou-ble” results, while the first late morning papers were nicknamed the “turf” edi-tions for printing the late scratches from tracks around the country.

Betting on horse races on-site was legal in all states with pari-mutuel wa-gering legislation, and even non-bettors knew that all bookmakers didn’t work in binderies. Friendly neighborhood bookies could be easily accessed at cor-ner newsstands, tobacco shops, bars, restaurants, and even in the workplace.

So what happened? Just how did the casino industry manage to leave horse racing in a cloud of dust?

Competition for America’s entertain-ment (and gambling) dollar, that’s what. State lotteries, casinos, the proliferation

of motor sports, in-home entertainment outlets such as VCRs and DVDs, the In-ternet, and the expansion of other sports and the duration of their seasons have all helped to push horse racing out of the limelight it once enjoyed.

In some respects, horse racing has also been forced to play second fiddle to sports betting. Despite the fact that wagering on the outcome of athletic events is illegal in every state except Nevada, newspapers everywhere are loaded with odds tables, point spreads, injury reports, and other information pertinent to wagering on football, bas-ketball, baseball, etc. And the majority of the newspapers’ readers are not plac-ing their bets at the sports books of Las Vegas, but with their local bookies—or on the Internet.

Still, horse racing remains a popular pastime and many racetracks now ex-ist alongside casino/resorts. But what is the economic and entertainment value of horse racing and casino gambling co-existing in a common venue? Are racetrack/casino combos merely a con-venient way to expand state-regulated gaming, while at the same time support-ing the struggling horse racing industry?

Whatever the reason, those who like to play the odds now have a myriad of options to choose from, whether those options include horseracing, slot ma-chines, table games, or the state lottery. Take your pick. And then place your bets.

If a proposed contract recently approved by the Navajo Nation’s legislative branch back in December is approved by the state of New Mexico, the tribe would be allowed to build one additional casino in the state sometime within the next six years. Last year a more generous proposal—five casinos over the next 30 years—was voted down by the NM State Senate.

The Navajo Nation, which currently operates Fire Rock Navajo Casino near Gallup, Northern Edge Casino near Farmington, and Flowing Water Navajo Casino near Shiprock, is one of six tribes that have been negotiating with NM State Governor Susana Martinez for new or renewed compacts. Those other tribes include Acoma Pueblo, the Jicarilla Apache Nation, and the Mescalero Apache Tribe, who operate casinos in New Mexico under contracts that expire this June; and the Jemez and Zuni pueblos, neither of whom currently own casinos, nor have they publically spoken about any immediate plans to build them.

Before taking effect, however, all compacts must be approved by both the NM State legislature, which convenes this month, and by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

You go to a basketball game and you know a basket is good for two points, a basket far away from the backboard is good for three points, and even Grand-ma knows a free throw is a one-point play.

But if you ask Grandma if she knows the difference between Class 2 and Class 3 gambling games, she’s likely to smack you with her heavy knit shawl.

Which is okay. Most of us who enjoy casino games on any given day and time cannot, and do not, know there was or is a difference in gaming classes.

But, yes, Dorothy, just as there is a Santa Claus, there are different classifications when it comes to dancing with Dame Fortune and her little sister, Lady Luck.

Let’s take New Mexico for example: How come I can inhale a Bud Light while playing Hold-’em in the poker room, but nothing stronger than a coke playing Hold-’em as a table game on the casino floor?

Well, playing live poker—player against player—

falls under Class 2 gaming, which allows for adult beverages to be consumed while playing because Class 2 games are not considered “hardcore” gam-bling ventures. On the other hand, Hold-’em as a casino-floor game pits the player against the dealer (the casino), and is therefore considered a different animal than the live-action game. It falls under Class 3 gaming restrictions.

In other words, Class 2 games, like bingo and horse

and dog racing, allow liquor to be served while play-ing. Class 3 games like slots, Keno, and all other table games? Not a chance.

Here’s another wrinkle: Casinos can place Class 2 “slot machines” in their cocktail lounges, no sweat. Maybe that’s because Class 2 slots replicate pull tabs, which are also Class 2—and therefore not considered hardcore gambling devices.

With the exception of horseracing, all Class 2 games are exempt from taxation. (Horseracing op-erations pay 46 percent of their profits in taxes—20 percent to the horsemen’s association with which they are affiliated and 26 percent to the state.) Class 3 games on the other hand are all taxable.

The one Class 3 game that boggles is Baccarat, or Mini-Baccarat, both of which are available at a few casinos in our state. You’d think this game, which ba-sically requires no hardcore strategy, should be Class 2. Just sit, sip, and pretend you’re James Bond. And the champagne should flow accordingly. But, no. It remains solidly Class 3 for some reason.

Why?You got me. I just report this stuff.

Learn Blackjack from the Pro!

Blackjack the Smart Way

Years ago, I was more liberal when a friend or relative asked to tag along with me as I played blackjack at a ca-sino. My answer was usually, “Sure!”

Now I’m more circumspect. And you should be too. Why?If you’re having a grand old time

chatting up your friends or trying to get intimate with a woman, your at-tention is compromised. (Legendary golfer Tiger Woods is also legend-ary for doing this kind of thing at the blackjack table, to his detriment.) In these situations you’re not capable of paying attention to the cards at the lev-

el the game demands—if, that is, you want to win. If you’re rich and you’re content to lose (as Tiger apparently is), then disregard anything I say here.

Another reason to be careful about who you take to the table: Those of us who play blackjack in order to make money consider this a vocation, not a hobby, and so it’s important for us to become, and remain, anonymous. That’s because, in most states and lo-cales, you can get permanently barred from a casino simply for being a win-ner. So you want to stay under the ca-sino’s radar. And, regrettably, many people you might take to the blackjack

Who to Take to the Table with You

table will inadvertently blow your cover.

That doesn’t mean I haven’t gone to the table with a babe or two in tow—preferably dressed provocatively (be-cause the casino employees and man-agers are distracted by cleavage). But the girlfriends I bring are well-coached in the game and in how to behave. They never ever distract me from my game. But they do distract the man-agement, the people who might bar me or throw countermeasures at me if they paid attention to how much I was winning.

I’ve also gone with a brilliant cousin of mine. Casinos don’t expect an ad-vantage player such as myself to go to the table with anyone else (except, perhaps, in a team situation), especial-ly a woman (that’s their mindset, for whatever reason). They think serious players want to play alone.

So there are times when companions can stave off unwanted scrutiny, and that’s good.

What about forming a team? I’ve thought of doing that, but, for me, the risks are too high. Then you’re only as strong as your weakest link—ei-ther from a playing vantage point

or a cloak and dagger viewpoint (in other words, a weak link can inadver-tently, through a lack of smoothness, blow your cover). Another drawback to team play is that it raises the ire of casinos, it is more easily detected than the lone wolf or guy-with-well-behaved-babes approach, and in some locales team playing is considered il-legal or cheating.

Who do I never ever go with? Fans. Students. Casual friends. Acquain-tances. At the very least, your com-panions won’t do well and, in their discouragement, force you to leave the casino before you’re ready. At worst, they will blow your cover, like the un-cool woman I took along on a jaunt several years ago. While playing, she shouted at me, “Why don’t you help me? You’re the blackjack expert!”

Needless to say, it was time to leave the casino (and the woman) at that very moment.

Another time, a jealous friend vis-ited me at the blackjack table and blurted out, “You’ve won $500 bucks in 20 minutes?” (Such comments are provocative and could inspire the pit boss or dealer to throw countermea-sures at you.)

The Illusion of Skill

Dear Mark: I like to play on slot machines that allow me to stop the reels from spinning. Does having control of the outcome make any difference? Kate S.

Whether you stop the reels your-self or allow the machine to do it, both ways, Kate, produce random results. Many a superstitious play-er believes in synchronicity, that simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related. The game’s designers prefer to call it the “illusion of skill.”

Those who favor stopping the reels from whirling think they are in charge of the outcome. In reality, Kate, your result had already been predetermined when the reels started spinning.

Sorry, Kate, but your golden touch will not make any difference, although the rabbit’s foot in your purse may, notwithstanding the evidence that it didn’t work for the rabbit.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)Solar power shifts into your house of friendships and future aspirations. You will be more involved with group and social activities at this time. Planning and strategy is key in guiding your career for more long term results and financial gain. Be open to love.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)This is an exciting and energetic month, during which you are filled with a thirst for knowledge and experience. If you’ve been putting off classes for accreditation or self-improvement, this is the cycle in which to head in that direction. Short impromptu travel is feasible up until the 16th.

GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 21)Your ruling planet keeps you bogged down putting out fires at work and on the home front until the 11th. This is a very demanding time, during which you are multi- tasking and trying to complete your own projects at the same time.

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 22)The alignment of several planets in water make this an extremely sensitive and intuitive period. You will want to work on personal and professional relationships and clarify any misgivings. Reviewing your financial situation also takes center stage.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUGUST 22)The full moon lands in your sign on the third, giving you time to reflect on where you want to put your time and money. This is your chance to expand and be creative on all fronts. You are able to take some long overdue R&R now.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22)You feel pulled between family concerns and putting energy into your personal life. The new moon on the 18th puts you out in public, either writing, teaching, or speaking. This is a powerful time of self growth and accomplishment.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 23)Prepare for a sudden change in your health, work, and daily routine. You might want to book a spa day, change your wardrobe, and even investigate nutritional supplements. This is your time to be indulgent and follow your heart’s desires.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 21)This is period of healing and rebuilding. Start making plans and take your loved ones on a working vacation. Mercury’s retrograde motion until the 11th brings you back to the past as you hear from old friends and business associates.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 21)You are usually a social butterfly, but the rays of Saturn are pulling on you to take care of domestic obligations. This is a time to put energy into your own affairs, especially under the new moon, which will bring you a sense of much-needed clarity.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19)Your planetary ruler continues to bring you upbeat and prosperous opportunities. You can go all out for Valentine’s Day, now that your finances are back on track. You will seek many business ventures, but wait until the 11th to decide.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 19)Happy Birthday and get ready for Mardi Gras! This is a fabulous time, with fire signs making things happen. You are ready to go to the next level on all fronts and are extremely productive and positive. Expect surprises and financial windfalls.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)You are always seeking a deeper meaning, and the Chinese Year of the Sheep on the 19th compels you to get out and celebrate in your own way with friends and family. Balancing the material and the spiritual, as well as enjoying more quality time, is the theme for this month.
