Social Media Data Center
This U.S. tech giant data center is one of many around the globe that provides data storage solutions for their social media operations.
Background
This U.S. - based data center provides mission-critical storage solutions for a social media giant. To maximize uptime, back-up power systems must reliably supply loads when utility disruption occurs.
Failure of back-up power systems would result in loss of data, and diminished confidence in the facility. It would also jeopardize future investment in the facility.

Critical Need: Customer wanted sophisticated network control and monitor over 45 portable load banks from a single control platform. They also needed ability to run control power from a dedicated external source.

Results:
• ASCO modified a standard load bank to suit specific end-user requirements.
• ASCO provided external control power capabilities.
• The load bank provided 400kW at 480V, 3 Phase, 60 Hz; 400kW at 240V, 3 Phase, 60 Hz; and 300kW at 208V, 3 Phase, 60Hz.
• The load bank included local SIGMA LT control with digital toggle switches for smooth load step transitions.
• SIGMA Network Pro Software along with SIGMA Gateway Modules were provided for advanced networking up to 200+ load banks from a laptop.
• Quick connect receptacles were provided on units for load control and ground cabling.
• 10 M interconnection cables were provided for networking multiple load banks, and to interface the load bank with SIGMA LT Touchscreen Controller.

The SIGMA Network Pro with Gateways solution provided the perfect solution for the customer. The software allowed the customer to create customized groups and test configurations which greatly reduced the test time from a typical commissioning job. ASCO Power Technologies also provided an external line cord to facilitate control power from a separate 120V source. The external power source enabled the load banks to maintain control power when the main three phase power was disconnected from the system under test.
The Situation
Precise repeatable control and monitoring are critical for data center commissioning and start-up. This social media tech giant required multiple load banks to be networked for start-up and commissioning of new data centers. To do this effectively, the customer wished to control groups of load banks within the power network.
The customer also required the load bank’s 120V, single phase control power to be derived from an external source, and not the power system under test.
The Solution
To meet this customer’s needs, ASCO Power Technologies modified a standard Model 2805 portable Load Bank for external control power sourcing.
This multi-voltage 400kW load bank offers 5kW resolution and SIGMA control for precise and repeatable load testing. The industry-exclusive SIGMA Network Pro Software Control (with SIGMA Gateway Modules) can provide control for up to 200+ load banks. The intelligent Gateway Module converts the load bank CANbus protocol to MODBUS over Ethernet, which allows multiple strings to be connected together and controlled from one single point.
