The customer is one of the largest oil and gas/energy producer in South-East Europe. Its activities contain all the business segments of this domain, from Exploration and Production, Refining, Marketing as well as Gas and Power. The oil company has more than 4.000 filling stations worldwide, and which about 650 of them are located in Romania.

About the client

For the Romanian branch, the customer wanted the following:

- to increase the popularity of its brand name and to achieve better customer retention (customer stickiness)

- to enhance the sales in the gastro-pub area (food and drink). The more people stay in “gastro” area the more they consume so WiFi Internet access it was requested. Internet access for notebooks, tablets and smartphones makes people spend more time in coffeebar.

- to get data (phone number, email) about the clients who came to the gas stations for possible subsequent promotions and in order to compile a data base of loyal customers;

- at the same time, many gas station are located in places that are difficult to reach for the providers of data services via standard cables (be it ISDN, ADSL, coaxial cable or fiber optics) so wireless WAN access was required;

- the final customer wanted not only Internet access for the clients of the gas stations but also secure data access for his own needs: POS, information systems for inventory management, real time knowledge about what has been sold and what it needs to resupply for each filling station;

- even for the gas stations located inside cities where there is a classic wired data connection, the final customer wanted assurance of redundancy by means of an alternate wireless connection, for the instances when the primary cabled data connection is no longer available!

Customer need

A solution / system that assures access to WAN via 3G/4G mobile networks, at the same time providing access to wired LAN for the equipments from the gas station premises and with controlled Wi-Fi for the customers who come to the station for refill or to eat.

The WAN connection over radio has to be totally secured (VPN access with guaranteed bandwidth) and the equipments must provide also an authentication portal for the WiFi clients! This is required because customer's data must be taken down for security purposes, to check the customer's identity according to the legal requirements. Everything that comes in from Wi-Fi is forwarded to the server located at the oil and gas company's Headquarters.

For legal purposes, to associate an e-mail address with each customer that uses Wi-Fi for web browsing/ email and to compile a data base with the phone numbers and e-mail addresses of the customers.

For this, each customer must fill-in an access form: when he drives in and gets to the station, he sees the ESSID “X Gas Station 359” that presents a page with a log-in form from the server. The customer must fill-in his ID data, show valid e-mail address; in the next page he gets a password so he can have full Internet access via the respective Hotspot. The password may be used without limits, or it can have a certain duration (for instance, it is valid only for 20 minutes).The same password can be used on any visit of the client to all gas stations that are equipped with this kind of WiFi solutions.

For legal purposes, in order to avoid hacking from gas station WiFi access, the email address must be kept for all end-users that have a password generated and used the WiFi hotspot.

Solution to customer needs


Because it can be fitted with different types of 3G/4G modems, including LTE which assures a download rate of 100 Mbps;

It features state of the art WiFi embedded access point, type b/g/n, optionally with antenna diversity (main and auxiliary) for better coverage or higher speed;

Provides the required Security features: uses IPSec and Open VPN solutions. Bytton provides total security for the data carried via this gateway. It supports security at Layer 2, Layer 3 and Application Layer;

By means of advanced QoS technologies you can perform prioritization of critical data (in this case the POS and information systems for inventory management) over the data pertaining to WiFi Internet access for the customers; this is done via Layer 2 or Layer 3 marking and shaping – VLAN tagging and TOS/DSCP;

Since it can use antenna diversity (MIMO) both for LTE and for Wi-Fi, the Bytton equipment provides a better coverage and a higher signal level, both for the wireless connection to the Internet and for the wireless local network as well;

Bytton can perform traffic filtering upon Wi-Fi using criteria such as protocols, for instance it will allow (provide) just e-mail access and Web browsing, but no FTP, no video streaming, no downloading of large files, and no VoIP.
