STUDY

The solutionSignificant demand for parking in Central London means that drivers can spend an average of 15 minutes looking for available spaces. While drivers search and wait for availability, they continually contribute to the congestion and air pollution of the Capital. The distribution of vehicles across parking spaces can also be massively uneven; under-used parking areas are regularly in close proximity to saturated areas and drivers unaware of available spaces nearby.

The City of Westminster Council looked for an intuitive solution to try and help drivers reduce the time taken to find an on-street parking space within the city’s boundaries. The solution was found in the installation of some 3,400 infra-red sensors into parking bays. These sensors, when activated, send information to a mobile phone app that shows drivers a real-time map of free parking spaces.

Smart Parking Ltd, the company responsible for the vehicle bay sensing technology, looked for a resin that could effectively bond the infra-red sensor to each on-street parking area. The build-up of each London street varies considerably, so the adhesive needed to be compatible with a wide range of substrates, particularly concrete and asphalt. After careful deliberation, Smart Parking specified the totally cold applied adhesive, Triflex Cryl R 238. Work started in January 2014, where teams worked to drill up to 100 cores a day. These areas were then filled with Triflex Cryl R 238 and each sensor placed on top. The adhesive cured within 1 hour and created a strong bond between sensor and road; this high-strength adhesion means that each sensor will remain securely in place and cannot be stolen.

Westminster is an extraordinarily busy city, so the infra-red parking sensor project had to be kept to a rigid time frame, limiting any disruption to residents, businesses and tourists in the area; the exceptionally rapid curing ability of Triflex Cryl R 238 was an obvious advantage in this demanding situation. The adhesive being totally cold applied also ensured that there was absolutely no risk to people or property from hot works. This large-scale and ambitious project was completed in July 2014 and due to the massive success of the scheme, an additional 7,000 sensors are planned to be installed mid-2015.
