The home of kings and presidenTs, The CasCais CiTadel palaCe is now a spaCe open To The publiC.
In 1870, at the behest of King Louis I, the Cascais Citadel Palace was adapted
to serve as summer residence for the Royal Family. It was his son, Carlos I,
who added a floor onto the Santa Catarina pavilion where he installed the
royal apartments and Portugal’s very first marine biology laboratory.
With the change of regime, the Cascais Citadel Palace was handed over to
the Presidency of the Republic, and was used occasionally by the Heads of
State as a summer house or safe haven. President Óscar Carmona chose
it as his main residence, adding to it the Glass Lounge, a project by the
engineer Duarte Pacheco.
After a period of abandonment and neglect, when the Cascais Citadel Palace
suffered considerable decline, it was restored and rehabilitated on the
orders of President Aníbal Cavaco Silva with the support of the Municipality
of Cascais and the Portuguese tourist board.
More than a century later, the Palace gained a new status and function, and
was opened to the public for the first time.
Besides its museological component, the Palace serves as accommodation
for foreign heads of state and other guests of the president, to host official
ceremonies and other presidential activities.
The management model of the Cascais Citadel Palace also allows the
Museum of the Presidency of the Republic to hire out the space for non-
