Celebrating its fi fth year, the NOLA Polar Express is a live music concert that will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at The Publiq House on Freret Street. This evening of music is hosted by local band The Wooden Wings and will also feature John Shirley of Cardinal Sons, Hello Nomad, and Barisal Guns. The revenue generated from NOLA Polar Express is used to buy toys and gifts for the children of CASA New Orleans during the holiday season.

aboutOUR MISSIONCASA New Orleans fi ghts for the rights of abused and neglected children. Our goal is to ensure that every child has a safe permanent, nurturing home.

OUR WORKADVOCACYIn 1985 CASA New Orleans became the fi rst CASA program in the State of Louisiana and has since served thousands of children in foster care. We make sure that a qualifi ed, compassionate adult will fi ght for and pro-tect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect and to learn and grow in the safe embrace of a loving family. Every Advocate is just a regular citizen like you: volunteers, appointed by the courts, who have been trained in how to advocate for neglected and abused children in the foster care and family court sys-tems. They work to assure the rights and needs of these children are at the forefront of decisions that are being made by judges and lawyers and family members. Youth who receive a CASA Advocate are more likely to be adopted, less likely to return to foster care if reuni-fi ed, have few moves while in care, and do better in school, all of which reduce their long-term risk status. Research shows that youth with a CASA Advocate score higher on nine protective factors: neighborhood resources, interested adults, sense of acceptance, controls against deviant behavior, models of conventional behavior, positive attitude towards the future, valuing achievement, ability to work with others and ability to work out confl icts. TRANSITIONING YOUTHAs a youth approaches 18 and then continuing after they exit care, our CASA Advocates help coordinate their plan after foster care, including safety, education, employment, and housing needs. This work with teens is absolutely critical. If a child does not achieve permanency before their 18th birthday, they are then left with no choice but to “age out” of foster care. Without support, these children are almost half as likely to have obtained their high school degree by 19, only rarely going on to to earn college degrees. One in fi ve experiences homelessness within a year of exiting care. But there is hope. Children who fi nd permanent connections and have support as they transition out of care are more likely to beat these odds. One of the most critical factors in an unsuccessful transition is the number of sys-tems involved and the diffi culty of navigating the bureaucracy between them. CASA New Orleans is uniquely positioned to help fi nd these permanent connections and reduce ineffi ciencies in the system. Now, not only are we providing advocacy to children from 0-18 through the court system, we are also the only CASA program in the state that is providing mentoring and intensive services to foster youth 14-24.
