Under the terms of the Land Act of 1796, Isaac Craig purchased the land. It had previously been occupied by Eastern Indian tribes, including several Iroquois groups. On July 1, 1800, approximately 1100 acres were purchased from Mr . Craig by Thomas Fawcett. Fawcett, his wife and eight children settled in an area which could have been classified as frontier, due to its small population of only a few residents. Fawcett had originally named the town St. Clair in honor of Arthur St. Clair, Governor of the Northwest Territory at the time. However, most local residents and townspeople preferred to call it Fawcettstown. English potters migrated here and named the town Liverpool. In 1834, Liverpool was incorporated as East Liverpool, due to the fact that there was already a town in Medina County, Ohio, which was called Liverpool. During the years of 1839-1840, James Bennett, a trained English potter, fathered the chief industry of East Liverpool as we know it - pottery. Bennett was the first to successfully manufacture and market this product, though other individuals had used the natural clay resources to produce pottery. A rugged operation in those days all pottery work was done by hand. “Throwing” on the potter’s wheel was the only method of forming the ware. Then the “boss” would market the pottery in wagons around the countryside or on trading boats down in the Ohio River . As soon as he returned, he would pay the “help” with bartered goods and work would begin on another kiln of ware. Soon, other potteries sprang up, and the city became known as “Crockery City” and was the only community wholly devoted to the manufacture of pottery in the United States of America. East Liverpool and surrounding cities Calcutta and Wellsville, Ohio, and Chester and Newell of West Virginia still rely on the pottery industry, but the monopoly that once took over the towns no longer exists, and a diversity of products have been added by new enterprises.
