The best of British carpets have been made in the beautiful Devontown of Axminster since way back in 1755. Each one is made using

wonderful wool from sheep grazing the rol ling hil ls of Britain,spun and dyed in the UK and woven right here in Devon. It’s a

guarantee of quality and it’s the way we work, even to this day.

In fact, we’re proud to be a manufacturerthat takes British wool from the fields toyour floor, using the experience ofgenerations of craftspeople. Theirtechniques have been handed down overthe years, making Axminsters unlike anyother carpets in the world. Make friends with your vacuumA great-looking carpet is one that getsvacuumed regularly, ideally every day. Ifyour vacuum has a beater bar or brushhead, that’s even better. Take it slowlyso the vacuum has enough time to cleanfrom deep in the tufts, and concentrateon well-trodden areas like stairs,hallways and in front of chairs.

Think about wear and tearThe position of your furniture will createareas that are more or less trodden onthan others, so if your room is bigenough, try to move things aroundoccasionally. It’ll make you see yourroom in a whole new light too!

Stair carpets can get a lot of wear andshifting them from time to time canreally help. Ask for a little extra length tobe left at the top and bottom so thecarpet can be shifted, or order a littleextra so you can replace worn areas ifyou need to.

If your carpet runs right up to anexternal door, use a mat to catch dirtand grit on its way in. Always take offshoes with grips, like trainers, as theycan tear the pile.

Protect against mothsMoths can cause a lot of damage, sotake extra care to clean around potentialbreeding spots like skirting boards,cupboards and heavy furniture. Know your carpet first aidSpills are going to happen, but tacklingthem in the wrong way can make thingsworse. The best thing to do in many casesis soak up as much liquid as possible witha clean cloth or kitchen towel. If it hasn’tsoaked in yet, a final wipe leaving the pilein the right direction may do the trick.If not, see the carpet rescue guide onpage 62.

Method CSponge the mark with asolution of one part whitevinegar to three partsclean, warm water. Leavefor 15 minutes thensponge with clean, warmwater, blot thoroughlyand gently brush the pilein its natural direction.

Carpet Care

We’ve put together a handy chart to help you come to your carpet’s rescue.But whatever the spill, remember:• Deal with it quickly so it’s less likely to stain.• Don’t rub, or you’ll damage the yarn.• Don’t use salt or white wine on a red

wine spill.• Work from the outside inwards to limit the

affected area.

• Use a cleaner designed for wool, working itin with a brush, sponge or cloth, then rinsing.

• When you’ve finished, blot thoroughly andbrush the pile in the right direction.

• If you’re in any doubt, call a professionalcarpet cleaner.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR CARPET CARE

1 Take your shoes off – it’s not just muckyfootprints you’ll prevent; soles with gripscan damage carpet pile.

2 Vacuum every day. That’s right, every day.If your vacuum has a beater bar or brush head, even better.

3 Move things around a little - reorganisingyour furniture can reduce wear and tear incertain places.

4 When carpet pile starts to look flat,vacuum against the direction of the pile tohelp lift it.

5 If your new carpet is shedding fluff,vacuum it regularly so it doesn’t clogthe pile.

6 Deal with spills quickly so they’re lesslikely to stain.

7 Mop up spills gently using a clean whitecloth – don’t rub!

8 Don’t believe the old wives’ tales – saltand white wine aren’t good for cleaningred wine, or anything else!

9 If you’re using cleaning products on spills,make sure they’re designed forwool carpets.

10 If in doubt, call in the experts. Yourcarpet is a big investment so it’s worthgetting help with a tricky stain.

NEW CARPET NIGGLES

When your new carpet is first fitted, youmight notice a few little niggles while it’sgetting settled in. Don’t worry, they’retotally normal and won’t last long:

Shedding – all new carpet sheds to beginwith. Just vacuum regularly to stop itclogging up the pile.

Sprouting tufts – occasionally little tuftsare missed when carpets are shearedsmooth and these can work their way tothe surface. Never pull them, just cutthem off level with sharp scissors.

Visible bands – when carpet is stored onbig, heavy rolls in a warehouse, it candevelop crush lines. These will disappearwithin a few weeks with regularvacuuming.
