Foreword

2013

Without a doubt, design

enthusiasts will have

found something

to excite and intrigue

T he Carpet Design Awards have become a focal point of the rug industry since their first appearance eight years ago. The handmade rug

has continued to transform, and the Awards have provided an opportunity for collectors and buyers to see advances in design and production while offering designers the chance to show progress in their creative methods.

Without such vision and ingenuity, rugs are reduced to being simply another product; innovation is replaced by cliché, art disappears and designs become wholly derivative. Promoting originality and integrity lies at the heart of what the Carpet Design Awards aim to achieve.

This year, it was encouraging to note the growth in the use of traditional patterns as well as the emergence of many highly successful transitional designs, unifying the old and new.

DOMOTEX 2013 has once again proved to be an ideal setting for the Awards, providing buyers with the most diverse choice of floor coverings in the world ranging from antique to contemporary, small to large and traditional to revolutionary. Without a doubt, design enthusiasts from everywhere will have found something to excite and intrigue.

The Carpet Design Awards showcase the finest rugs from DOMOTEX exhibitors and non-exhibitors alike, making the competition truly universal. Months of preparation and deliberation over 214 entries from 25 countries were eventually distilled into the shortlist of finalists presented here. We congratulate those who reached the last stage of the competition, and offer our thanks to all who entered and made the contest fierce. More people than ever attended the Awards this year, giving finalists exceptional opportunities to market and brand themselves.

The next Carpet Design Awards will be accepting entries from September 2013. We look forward to welcoming designers from around the globe again, and to making it the best event yet.

Best Liked by DOMOTEX Visitors

A unique contest determines the winner of the Awards’ final category. The Best Liked rug is decided by visitors to the Carpet Design Awards stand. Votes are counted on the last day of the fair, when the winner is presented with their prize. In 2013 this Award went to a rug of singular design: Diversity, designed by Angel Trading Company, shown in Category 4: Best Modern Design: Deluxe.

Introduction

2013

The number of entries

for Best Traditional

Nomadic Design rose

sharply in 2013

DOMOTEX, HALI and COVER are proud to present the finalists and winners of the 2013 Carpet Design Awards. The growth of the

CDAs over the past eight years would not have been possible without our partner, Deutsche Messe; our gold sponsor, Maison de L’Artisan; and our supporter, the European Carpet Importers’ Association (EUCA). Together we have seen the Awards develop into the world’s leading competition and showcase for handmade rug design.

The CDAs highlight and honour the outstanding talent and creative energy powering the handmade carpet industry, and provide a valuable opportunity to appreciate and respond to emergent trends.

The categories of the Carpet Design Awards have altered and adapted over time, and this year has been no exception. The Best Modern Design categories were as popular as ever, but the number of entries for Best Traditional Nomadic Design also rose sharply, reflecting a change in the market and movement within the industry.

The entries provided the judges with a privileged snapshot of the best rugs and latest trends from across the world (though the anonymity of the entrants was, as always, strictly maintained throughout the judging process).

The Awards could not have become the success they are today without our jury, the members of which so generously give their time and expertise to shortlisting the finalists and choosing the winners. Our thanks go to the chairman of the panel, James Ffrench – who, we are sorry to note, is retiring from the panel this year.

We encourage you to submit your entries for the Carpet Design Awards 2014 beginning this September, and look forward to seeing the finalists at DOMOTEX next year.

‘Perfect colour combinations combined with innovative tufted textures’

Ayear since its first outing, this category’s

increasing popularity owes much to the entrants’ ability to intrigue and impress. The cream of original, contem-porary, limited edition designs by studio artists and producers is awarded a €2,500 prize in a category that gives an opportunity for independent designers to push the boundaries of the art form. In the designing process they must not only consider the function of a rug but demonstrate an understanding of the conventional techniques of the medium. Rugs in this category ranged from the outrageous to reimaginings of nature, making this one of the most interesting categories to judge.

‘Simplicity and technique can impart great grace’

‘This rug would be very easy to

use in any type of interior’

The reintroduction of the ‘Standard’ category this

year allowed for a greater range of rugs to be entered into the competition. With the current economic climate, it is encouraging to see remarkable value still to be found in this price range. This shows that budget is no hindrance to the creation of good contemporary design. Many of the rugs in this category used styles that would be suitable in a variety of spaces, with colours that can easily be adapted to different themes and tastes. The finalists were all fine examples of the theory that sometimes less is more.

‘The unique character of this rug was achieved by building up three layers of design’

‘A flowing design of

hypnotising beauty’

The most competitive category this year with

more than thirty entrants, it was the variety of approaches to design and, ultimately, quality within a price range that won it for the jury. Quality is paramount; from the side and end finishes to the weaving technique and the wool, the quality of its ingredients lend a good rug its distinctive appeal. Layering techniques and multiple pile heights were popular, some more dramatic than others. Multiple colours were diversely used but worked in harmony together, a balance within a composition that only a good designer understands.

‘A good message and unusual approach to design’

‘Decorative, contrasting,

sharp and very contemporary’

The highest price category normally presents us

with the highest quality materials and the most innovative designs. Each carpet has been made with the highest level of craftsmanship, and expert finishing. These acknowledge a noble tradition, whilst engaging the viewer intellectually and visually. The high standard is evident in the fact that two of the overall winners were eventually selected from this category, one (Com un Camp Llaurat) chosen by the judges, and the other (Diversity) by the visitors to DOMOTEX.

‘Playing with the scale of an individual tribal element’

‘Iconic with its challenging colours

which presents a new eye on

traditional designs’

Nomadic carpets are ever more popular and this

category received a high number of entries this year. Interestingly this year many of the entries showed how traditional designs are now being used to create new perspectives on old patterns. This not only demonstrates the ability of rug design to continue to develop and adapt with the times but also that tradition still has an important part to play in contemporary rug design. The rugs in this category showed a high level of expertise in technique and colouring, making it a tough choice for the judges.

‘Beautifully made with great elegance and harmony’

‘Felt to reflect the energy of

the original pattern’

This category is conceivably the most

difficult to judge as the jury must agree upon whether it is the authenticity and loyalty to the original antique design that is important or whether a rug enhances and regenerates the tradition out of which it comes, becoming more than a reproduction. The entries this year had moved on from simple imitation, and were persistent in their extensions of design traditions, giving a new spin to the medium. The finalists were seen as beautifully coloured with a wonderful sense of elegance and admirable attention to detail in finishing.

‘A rare example of a little known and underappreciated tradition’

‘Admired for its remarkable condition and

Antique rugs are still very popular in many areas

of the rug world. Not only do they represent the epitome of certain weaving traditions but they also inform the next generation of rug makers and designers. Many of the rugs entered in the CDAs have been inspired by designers studying the many unique characteristics of antique weavings such as weave, colouration and design proportion. However the variety of styles and types in this category make it very hard to judge. This year the entries varied from the early 19th century through to the 20th century. The winner was eventually decided upon for its eternal beauty and quality.

‘A very strong stylistic statement with a dash of irony’

‘A beautiful rhythm to the

colours and textures of silk

The collections category always has an

astonishing number of rugs to choose from. The decision eventually comes down to selecting a series of designs that worked well as a unified whole, that are strong individually in addition to working as a group commer-cially. Strong colours were a coherent theme and the high quality of the carpets showed off the indisputable skills of the fabricators. The finalists had varied designs from strong graphics to flowing lines vibrating with soft movement. The winner was eventually decided due to its calm yet dynamic energy and creative use of colour and texture, ideal for modern tastes.

The collection category is more restrictive in terms

of criteria as the carpets must have a cohesive theme which holds around a central concept, and works both aesthetically and intellec-tually whilst maintaining a traditional feel. The entries showed that designers can draw inspiration from a number of fields and it is encouraging to see traditional design collections offering such variety. The criteria was evident in all of the finalists and shows that traditional and transitional designs are much in vogue.

‘A new expressive form for carpets aimed at a younger generation’

‘Playing with pictorial and abstract expression’

The innovation category introduces us to the

latest ideas in carpets, which can be anything from new materials to optical illusions. This year the entrants all played with notions of the photographic image, thereby showing that there are still many unexplored areas in design. The jury must consider which of these designs is most innovative but can also serve its purpose and be used in an interior. Therefore the whole concept of rugs has been elevated and there are many different interpretations that answer to the question of ‘innovation’.
