THE SHOW

January 1945, Paris is liberated. Christiane, an eccentric and acutely myopic Parisian waits at Gare Du Nord for a ticket to England to be reunited with her fiancé. Whilst she waits, this gloriously irrepressible Mademoiselle recounts the extraordinary story of her love affair with Cyril, a tongue-tied teacher from Staffordshire. From a chance encounter at Cheadle tennis club, their story takes us on to cosmopolitan 1930s Paris before war interrupts their unlikely romance. A fond, tender, comical and ultimately poignant portrait of one woman's experience of love and war. In 2002, Caroline’s French grandmother, Christiane, moved into sheltered housing. Amongst a lifetime of clutter, Caroline found a shoebox containing wartime letters. She has pieced together this story from Christiane’s letters and from their conversations about her youth, her love affair with Cyril Horton and her memories of occupied France. Caroline performed the show for Christiane at her retirement home in Shenstone, Staffordshire in October 2010. Christiane died peacefully on 12th January 2011. You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy was commissioned as a one-woman stage play by China Plate/Warwick Arts Centre/mac for the Bite Size Festival 2010 and received a research and development grant from Arts Council England. It is my first piece of work as a solo artist. PRESS Best Solo Performer, The Stage Awards 2010

Horton’s enchanting script ensures that this ordinary tale of ordinary people in extraordinary times touches each one of us – and the gentle twist at the end leaves hardly a dry eye in the house.

Nick Awde

‘this simple and heartfelt show feels like a real labour of love… a really tremendous & rounded performance’

Lyn Gardner

‘Walking back to my rented flat after witnessing Caroline Horton’s one-woman tour de force, I started sobbing with what I can only describe as pure joy.’

Terri Paddock

‘Caroline Horton’s extraordinary one woman show is full of delightful surprises…..Horton’s comic timing and facial expressions move us effortlessly from thunderous belly laughs to tears of heartbreak’

Denise Bailey

‘It's a tale she tells with plenty of charm, but a gratifying lack of sentiment…As somebody whose grandparents went through similar, I'm not ashamed to say I found myself welling up at the dénouement.’

Andrzej Lukowski

‘gathers in both charm and emotional engagement until even a hardened hack may be on the brink of tears. Horton may not be hearing a “Who?” for very long.’

Ian Shuttleworth

2010 Festival Highlight ’Amid the clapping and cheering at the end of Caroline Horton’s one woman show there were a good number of barely suppressed sniffs and sobs - and when the house lights lifted it was possible to make out many people whose eyes were still glassy with tears or who were dabbing away at damp cheeks.’

Natasha Tripney

’Caroline Horton, a slight and sympathetic performer with wonderfully expressive eyes and hands, demonstrates some incredible comic timing, and her physicality is quietly detailed and rigorous. The script is also first-rate, and de-constructs English idioms to hilarious effect.… Horton's multimedia reframes her performance, transforming it from a well-written character piece into a creation (or curation?) that will bring tears to your eyes.’

Thomas Martin

’One-person plays are always a risky affair, requiring an actor and writer with enough talent to carry the performance alone. Thankfully, You're Not Like the Other Girls, Chrissy has both of these in Caroline Horton…..Perhaps because Horton is playing her grandmother, the play feels satisfyingly organic and complete: Fact and fiction, young and old, the past and the present combine in a performance that is funny but also incredibly moving.’

Dan Heap

‘This is the gem of the Fringe. Caroline Horton’s one-woman tale of World War II channel-crossed love will bring laughter and tears from a bygone era. Theatre of the highest order, it shows love is not for the meek’.

Matt Byrne

1/2 ‘A love story through which one falls in love with the performer….a terrific story for absolutely everyone. It’s a gem of a fringe show’.

Samela Harris

’a labour of love. The strength of Chrissy’s personality and of Caroline’s performance make this a standout show’

Adrian Miller

‘This is the type of performance that anyone with a love of theatre, anyone with a love of humanity and certainly anyone with a love of life should see’.

Olivier Award Nominee - 2013. Winner of Best Solo Performer, The Stage Awards 2010

You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy, is the extraordinary true story of an eccentric young French woman’s affair with a tongue-tied English teacher, set against the backdrop of the Second World War. Waiting at Gare Du Nord for the train that will reunite her with her fiancé, this irrepressible Mademoiselle shares their love story: from a chance encounter at Cheadle tennis club to cosmopolitan 1930s Paris, before their inevitable separation by war. In 2002, Christiane, moved into sheltered housing. Amongst a lifetime of clutter, was a shoebox containing her wartime letters. Over the last year, Caroline has pieced together her story from the letters and from their conversations about Christiane’s youth, her romance with Cyril and her memories of occupied France. These memories are full of humour, resilience and her love of life. Caroline Horton’s credits include: Heldenplatz (Arcola); Cinderella (Warwick Arts Centre); Art House and Almost 10 (Tangram Theatre, 2009 Edinburgh Festival). Other credits include: Les FEVs: Ou est il?, a clown show performed around France; Anna in Dreams to My Father (Teasel Theatre company); A Show That Will Save The World! (Potato Theatre, European tour and 2007 Edinburgh Festival); Graceland/Asleep on The Wind (Hen and Chickens); The Revenger’s Tragedy (Theatre Underground); Twelfth Night (Cambridge Arts Centre). Caroline is a member of The Optimists young theatre makers network in the West Midlands. You’re Not Like The Other Girls Chrissy is Caroline Horton’s first piece as a solo artist.
