President’s Message Jeff Molby SKA Consulting Engineers With the arrival of the cool weather and the beautiful fall colors, and the holiday season fast approaching, year- end will soon be upon us. 2013 was a good year for our Carolinas Chapter thanks to the continued excellent support of our membership and sponsors. Each event, including our spring conference in Durham (Corrosion), fall conference in Mt. Pleasant (Metals in Concrete) and our joint ICRI/WCA clay shoot and golf outings, was made successful by the active participation of the membership and the spirit of camaraderie that is our tradition here in the Carolinas. The Carolinas Chapter is proud to have performed our first service project in 2013, as volunteers performed paver and concrete walkway repairs at The Caring House, located in Durham, NC. The Caring House is a non- profit organization that assists cancer patients receiving long-term medical treatment by providing comfortable housing and care. Our goal as a Chapter is to build-on the success of this year’s project by making the service project an annual event that will allow volunteers from our Chapter to assist deserving organizations within our community. We welcome input from the membership in the form of identification of worthy organizations/projects for consideration by our Board of Directors and/or volunteer participation in the project. We give thanks to Past President John McDougall and Director Kent Yarborough whom will be rotating off of our Board of Directors at years- end. Their years of dedicated service and volunteer support have been a huge asset to our Chapter and they will be missed. 2014 looks to be an exciting year for our Chapter. We welcome Mark O’Brien and Steve Moore as our newest Directors. Our 2014 President Doug Saunders’ is leading the charge as our much anticipated spring Mega-Demo event takes shape. This two-day event will include a technical conference on Thursday followed on Friday by a series of product application and installation demonstrations. These events have always provided excellent instruction and training for engineers and contractors alike, and next year’s event will be no different. SEAGER WATERPROOFING WINS PROJECT OF YEAR ….. AGAIN!

One of the highlights of the chapter’s year is the awarding of the chapter Project of the Year award and for the second consecutive year Chapter Board member and Awards Chairman Hayes Thompson awarded the 2013 PoY winner of ICRI Chapter member to Seager Waterproofing for their masonry/terra cotta/stone repair of the First National Bank Building in Richmond, VA. Seager aided the design team in identifying, designing, & implementing these tedious repairs. The First National Bank Building was originally constructed in 1912. The building is nineteen stories in height and at the time of construction was the city’s tallest building. It is recognized as Richmond’s first skyscraper.

Early in 2009, a large piece of decorative copper sheet metal fell from the 17th floor causing the city to request that the building’s owner review the buildings condition. This resulted in developing plans for a large scale exterior restoration of the building’s entire façade. The repairs performed are outlined below:

Terra Cotta Restoration • Repointing of all upper level mortar joints• Reconstruction of the 14th floor balconies – deconstructed, repaired, and reconstructed two terra cotta balconies, including installing a soldiered copper roof on each. • Touch up all terra bisque with breathable masonry coating• Introduce relief joints for expansion• Pin cracked terra cotta units – 1725 each• Replace unsound terra units – 369 each• Custom terra cotta molds – 58 each

Stone• Repointing of all stone mortar joints• Windowsill replacement – 169 each• Dutchman repairs – 64 cubic feet

Clay Brick Masonry • Spot pointing – 3400 LF• Individual Brick Replacement – 315 each• Cluster Brick Replacement – 590 square feet• New brick lintels – 42 each

There was also many other repairs to the façade.• The 2 story tall copper panels were removed (in pieces), repaired, and reinstalled• Many other copper repairs, including replacing a balustrade section, repairing all of the existing copper ledges, cornices, balustrades, Etc.• All sealants on the building were replaced.• The entire façade was cleaned.• Structural steel repairs.

As mentioned above, the First National Bank was Richmond’s first skyscraper. It originated following the Civil War at a point where the Federal Government revoked the charters of all banks whose loyalty to the Union might be suspect. Richmond was without a bank until a group of citizens met with a Northern banker, who agreed to establish a bank under the Federal charter. This helped pull Richmond through the difficult years of Reconstruction. This bank was founded as First National Bank in April 1865, a mere 8 days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. In fact Robert E. Lee was one of the bank’s first customers.

The bank flourished and in 1910, they hired the New York firm of Clinton and Russell to develop plans for the present day building in which the work was performed. The building was to utilize the latest in design and technology.

The selected Architect was Alfred Charles Bossom. In June of 1913, the First National Bank moved its offices into Richmond’s first skyscraper. It remained the city’s tallest building until 1930.In addition to the building having such a unique history, the project itself had some very challenging issues that we had to overcome as well. Envision a nineteen story structure in a downtown metropolitan setting bound one side with an adjoining building, another side with an alleyway and the other two sides with major trafficked streets. Now also envision deconstructing major portions of the building façade ensuring zero tolerance against employee accidents, public safety and property damage. Now envision that the project has a fast track schedule which requires the entire façade to be worked on concurrently. Now envision that a supplier of a major portion of the work is months behind on their delivery. What an easy undertaking?

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Anson County ProjectEngineer/Arch: Anson CountyRestoration Contractor: Southern Restoration & Maintenance, Inc.Material Manufacturers: Sika/Keim/Dow/ProsocoDistributor: Guaranteed Supply Company

The Board of Directors of the Carolinas Chapter of ICRI is pleased to report that on September 13th, 2013 we completed our first volunteer service project. The performance of the service project is an important way we can provide a service to someone in need and give back to our community. Service Project Committee Chairmen Bruce Stoerkel and Ben Smith provided leadership for this inaugural project which they plan to make an annual project of the Chapter. If you are interested in being part of the 2014 effort or have an idea, pass your ideas along to the committee. This year the Chapter provided labor and material to repair paver and concrete walkways as well as some drainage repairs for The Caring House in Durham, NC. The Caring House is set up to provide comfortable housing for cancer patients receiving long term treatment at Duke (somewhat similar to hospice). It is a non-profit organization, so they try to perform all of their own maintenance and depend on volunteers and donations. This was our opportunity to help a worthy organization and we are proud to have provided this valuable service. Special thanks to the following organizations who donated their time, tools, and materials to this effort:Baker RestorationGuaranteed Supply CompanyHazen & SawyerLyons Manufacturing, Inc.The Quikrete CompanyStatesville Roofing & Building Restoration, Inc.Strickland Waterproofing Company, Inc.

Congratulations to Seager Waterproofing and their team for an extraordinary display of collaboration! Please join us in a big round of applause to three well deserving teams who have demonstrated great skill in preserving our historic buildings in the region!

But the competition was close this year and so two Honorable Mention Awards were also presented in recognition of two other outstanding projects, also of historical significance. While some award winning projects have historical status, the three 2013 award winners for Honorable Mention & Project of the Year entailed repair on buildings that totaled 367 years of age.

We would like to congratulate both Salem Services Group, LLC. for their structural repair of Grace Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC and Southern Restoration & Maintenance, Inc. for their concrete/masonry/terra cotta repair of the Anson County Courthouse in Wadesboro, NC. Leadership is a heavy burden as you can tell from this “meeting” of Carolinas Chapter Board members Ben Smith, John McDougall, Mark O’Brien and Paul Farrell.

It was a packed house for the opening sessions of the Carolinas Chapter Fall Convention; don’t miss next year’s meetings.

Doug Saunders congratulates John McDougall on his new position at Baker Restorations.

Working Friday night ain’t so bad: Debbie and Andy Anderson (Chapter legal counsel) and Holly and James Tippetts of BASF enjoy time at the fire pit before dinner.

MEMORIES OF CHARLESTON:

The line started forming early for the famous Charleston Low Country Boil buffet.

You may not have known their names, but we bet you remembered their cooking: Saundra Pryor and Connie Flower present their culinary masterpiece.

THE 2013 CAROLINAS CHAPTER FALL CONVENTION

Pretty hot stuff was the impression from Sam Fagan of Kenseal and Chapter Board member Bill Fortuna, as he kicks it up another notch.

Sometimes getting all the crab meat is a chal-lenge left to engineers; here Ben Smith of Hazen Sawyer and Chapter Lifetime Member Tom Hayes address the challenges.

Guaranteed Supply’s Willie Goncharow and Lisa Saunders don’t seem to be having any trouble opening up their crab legs.

Ahh, the genteel life of Charleston! Gentlemen relaxing in overstuffed leather chairs in the sit-ting room, talking about the events of the day. Or texting!!

Platinum Sponsors James Tippetts of BASF and Sam Fagan of Kenseal Construction Products remained wide eyed at the Saturday morning tabletops.

Chapter Board member Ben Smith reviewing the work done by the Service Project Team at the Caring place and recruiting members for next year.

Part of the membership of the first ICRI Carolinas Chapter Service Project Team: Mark O’Brien, Co-Chairmen Ben Smith and Bruce Stoerkel, Hayes Thompson and John McDougall in their Service Team polos.

Tara Cavalline of UNC Charlotte and incoming Chapter Vice President introduces the Pre-sentation on Steel Strengthening of Concrete Structures.

President Jeff Molby thanks the chapter for their support as he wraps up a very successful year.

An attentive audience for one of our outstanding Fall Convention speakers.

What makes engineers laugh? Not a trick question but Sergey Kobelev, Tara Cavalline and Sunil Puri have apparently found the answer.

Two old pros that have seen it all: Ken Johnson and Doug Saunders.
