The University of North Carolina men’slacrosse program, under the aegis ofeighth-year head coach John Haus, re-turns one of the nation’s most experiencedand talented teams in the 2008 season asthe Tar Heels seek their first Memorial Dayweekend appearance in the NCAA FinalFour since 1993.All 10 starters on attack, in the first mid-

field unit, on the close defense and in thegoal return for the Tar Heels, who are com-ing off a 10-6 season in which UNC ad-vanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. The2007 season marked Carolina’s secondquarterfinal appearance since 1996 andwith most of the team’s personnel returningand a solid freshman class joining the UNCprogram, North Carolina is ranked No. 5 inthe preseason by Faceoff Yearbook and In-side Lacrosse Magazine while the TarHeels are No. 10 in the preseason UnitedStates Lacrosse Association preseasoncoaches poll. With 35 lettermen overall returning from

the 2007 team which finished with a 10-6overall record and defeated Navy 12-8 inthe NCAA quarterfinal round at FetzerField. The Tar Heels lost five seniors off the2007 team who will be sorely missed fortheir talent and leadership — midfieldersDavid Ryan, Ben Staines, Ryan Walterhoe-fer and Tom Sciolla and attackman SamWagner.Coach John Haus, who has 117 career

coaching wins heading into 2008, is look-ing to lead the Tar Heels to their third NCAATournament appearance in the past fiveseasons. To do so, the Tar Heels will lookto continue to improve on defense at thesame rate as they did during the 2007 cam-paign. The last line of defense is juniorGrant Zimmerman who is back as one ofthe nation’s most experienced and athleticnetminders. Zimmerman started nine ofthe 13 games UNC played in 2006 and hestarted all 16 games last season at the po-sition. Zimmerman played all but 51 min-utes of UNC’s 2007 season in the goal forthe Tar Heels. In front of Zimmerman will be a very ex-

perienced close defense unit with all threestarters returning from 2007. Seniors TimKaiser and Brian Burke have been regularsthere for three years already and juniorJack Ryan shared the team’s most im-proved player award last year after a suc-cessful switch from the midfield.Kaiser was a third-team U.S. Intercolle-

giate LacrosseAssociation All-America lastyear and is a 2008 Faceoff Yearbook prea-son second-teamAll-America. Kaiser, whowas namedAll-ACC last season, started all16 games last year and was among the na-tion’s leaders in ground balls for close de-fensemen with 69 and in caused turnovers

with 32. Burke and Ryan provide perfectcomplements for Kaiser, who himself ex-cels as a takeaway specialist. Ryan is atough, physical presence around thecrease while Burke is a fast player withgood stick skills and excellent clearing abil-ity. Kaiser and Burke have good end-to-end abilities and they can both score on thefast break.Sophomore Chris Madalon will be the

No. 1 backup in goal for Carolina after play-ing in a limited role in 2007. The Tar Heelsare deep at the close defense position withsophomore Sean Jackson back after hestarted four games last season and twooutstanding defensive freshmen — RyanFlanagan and Kevin Piegare — added tothe mix, both of whom will compete for sig-nificant playing time .The Tar Heels are also well stocked at

the rope position with sophomores MichaelJarvis, Kerry McCormick and Jackson allback. All three saw extensive action therelast season and Jarvis started 12 games onthe wing for UNC. Flanagan will also get alook at the long stick midfield role.Adding depth on the defensive end will

be senior goalkeeper Andrew Moss andfreshman goalkeeper Jamie Locke as wellas a host of solid defensemen— junior PellGeorge, junior Chris Cortina, junior AndrewPyke, freshman Mike Chires, freshmanEmmit Kellar, freshman Scott Bollert, seniorTim McCall, sophomore Hunter Meldmanand freshman Milton Lyles. The Tar Heels return all three starters on

attack just as they do on close defense.Junior Bart Wagner is a preseason third-team All-America after earning honorable

Senior tri-captainFletcher Gregorytops the Tar Heeldepth chart at SSDM.

Senior Brian Burke’sstarting experience onclose defense is achief Tar Heel asset.

Junior Ben Hunt hada big offensive yearfor the Tar Heels with20 goals in 2007.

Rob Driscoll had 13goals for the TarHeels last season.

Redshirt junior GrantZimmerman startedin the goal on a full-time basis in 2007.
