birthday, which was some wee+s away.

6e had as+ed his mum and dad for a computer game but

it was >'( and money was always in short supply in their house. 8um said she would thin+ about it but couldn’t

promise. 6is sister, heobie, who was )( years old, had

been allowed to go away on a camping holiday with her

friend Sarah and her mum and dad to the 4a+e -istrict. This

meant that Tom couldn’t annoy her li+e he usually did.

6is dad wor+ed long hours as a lorry driver so they

didn’t see much of him but 8um said that -ad enjoyeddriving and he got to meet lots of nice people, but he was

always at home at the wee+ends.

Tom sat on his bed reading a comic and was soon very

sleepy. 6e started dreaming about his party? it was a lovely

day and all his friends came to his birthday tea. They had

egg sandwiches and cheese and tomato, cucumber and

lettuce sandwiches and lots of crisps and a huge ca+e withhis name on it with eight candles.

6is friends all sang 6appy irthday, his best friend eter

had bought him a wonderful new racing car with batteries,

his friend -avid bought him a new train, he had lots of

lovely presents and plenty of comics to read. After tea they

were about to play games when it started to rain and it

poured down all over 8um’s lovely tea. %verything wassoa+ing wet and could not be eaten. 6is wonderful birthday

ca+e was just a mess and he was crying and shouting at the

rain but it only got worse@

6e was in such a state that it wo+e him up just about the

time his mum shouted him for his tea.

6e was loo+ing round the room when he saw something

on his window ledge it was a large ginger cat@ Tom stared

at the cat and the cat, who had been asleep as well, opened

one eye. They stared at each other for a long time. 8um

    shouted him again.

Tom shouted? B2’m coming 8um,C and the large ginger

cat jumped up and raced bac+ through the open window.

Tom loo+ed out of the window in time to see the cat

jump down onto the +itchen roof and onto the fence. 2t was

last seen running across the fields at the bac+ of his house.

So Tom started to follow =inger around the tree. 6e

    stopped and said B:ow@C

Hight in front of him was a beautiful river. A boat wasmoored by the ban+ with two beautiful white mice each

with a long rowing oar sitting waiting. Tom ran bac+ to the

front of the tree. 6e could see the field and the garden gate

to his house but no river or boat or white mice. 6e rubbed

his eyes, and very gently tiptoed to the bac+ of the tree, once

more the river, the boat and the white mice were waiting.

    further.

They came to a little wooden bridge over the river where

the trees gently overhung into the very still water. The mice

started to turn under the branches, which were catching

Tom’s face, meaning he really couldn’t see where they were

    going.

6e was a little frightened, but =inger said to him, B:e
