Times and Seasons The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has attracted some fairly positive media attention recently. There were of course the usual stories of controversy following the recent Lambeth gathering of Archbishops from throughout the Anglican Communion. But there were some comments also on his expressed hope that the Church could eventually agree on a fixed date for Easter, preferably around the middle of April. I too have wistfully hoped we could fix a date for Easter, but I thought the difficulties of getting so many branches of Christendom to agree on it made the idea an impossible pipe dream. However, the newspapers were talking of it as perhaps a possibility within a number of years. In a year that sees Lent begin when we have barely had time to draw breath after Christmas, I can only applaud the possibility of having a little more space between such important church festivals. Such talk of festivals and seasons however also reminds us of the importance of having a rhythm both to our everyday lives and to the church year. The four seasons give shape to the natural year with a cycle of sowing, growth, reaping and resting, which allows new growth to begin. We can also see such cycles in our church year that give rhythm to our spiritual lives. Advent and Christmas stir us with the remembrance of God’s fulfilled promise in the coming of the Christ Child, and we can have great joy in celebrating that gift of love and grace. But Lent calls us to a time of preparation and discipline as we get ready to focus again on the cost to God of the salvation offered through Christ. Like a farmer preparing the ground for the seed to be sown, we are asked to reflect on how we live out our faith and do a bit of spiritual weeding where necessary. The disciplines of Lent are about refocusing our lives on what is really important, seeing what we can do without, to give more time and space to God. They are not about exercising self control for its own sake or curbing pleasure because we think God doesn’t really approve of the good things he has given us to enjoy. On the contrary, Lent can be a chance to shed some of the clutter that gets between us and God so that we can discover more fully how much he loves us and how much he wants us to enjoy his gifts in this life. So even if Lent does feel impossibly early this year, let’s ‘seize the day’ and take the opportunities it offers to go deeper in the life of faith. Lent is about far more than ‘giving things up’. ‘Taking something up for Lent’ is an even better way to make positive use of this season. That’s why we will be running a parish Lent course on Thursday evening from 11th February to Holy Week (apart from the healing service on Thursday 18th February), reflecting on the character of Jesus and his impact on the world. We will also have a noonday prayer time for Lent in church on the first Wednesday in March. These are opportunities to go deeper together and to pray together, but there are many resources for Lent that we can use as individuals, from Lent books and online resources for prayerful reflection, to the practical suggestions in Christian Aid’s ‘Count your blessings’ leaflets. Whatever we choose to do through this month and next to mark this special time of what our lectionary calls ‘discipline and self denial’, may we know God’s grace going with us and drawing us deeper into the experience of his love and joy. That is the true way to keep a holy Lent and make it count as we prepare for the journey through Holy Week to the joy of Easter Day.

With every blessing,

Fellowship Group, February The next meeting of the Parish Fellowship group will be on Thursday 4th February in the Memorial Room from 7.30-9pm. This will be a preparatory session for our Lent course which will be based on John Pritchard’s book ‘Living Jesus’. In our Fellowship group we will reflect on ‘Images of Jesus’ with help from the first chapter of Bishop Pritchard’s book.

In Memoriam Hannah Mary (Sheena) Sloan - Sheena Sloan passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve in her 89th year in the Nursing Home run by her daughter-in-law Margaret, from whose home her funeral was held. She had grown up in Kingsmoss but on her marriage to Sammy had lived for many years in Queen’s Gardens. She raised her son, Stanley, and daughter, Pamela, in the parish, with connections both with this church and St Brigid’s. A much loved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she was widowed over 10 years ago. She also endured the great sadness of seeing both her daughter and son predecease her, and the Vicar conducted Stanley’s funeral just over two years ago. The last years were particularly difficult for Sheena as she struggled both with health issues and the sorrow of such loss, so there is some comfort for her loved ones in knowing those struggles are now past. Nevertheless, our prayers are with her family and friends at this sad time. Gary Mills - It was a further shock to hear after Christmas of the death of Gary Mills, only son of Joan and Dixie. Though only 56, Gary had battled cancer without complaint for some 15 years since the first diagnosis, having good spells of remission but enduring difficult days in these last months. He grew up involved with the family, both in the parish church and in St Brigid’s and retained a strong grounding and quiet faith from those days. He spent time in these last years in the Northern Ireland Hospice and grew close to one of the chaplains there. At his own request, his funeral was taken on 31st December by that particular chaplain in the funeral home of Browns, Houston and Williamson. He was a gentle, quietly practical man of great kindness, always willing to lend a helping hand whenever needed, though not outgoing in signs of affection. A much loved son and brother, husband, father and grandfather, he will be deeply missed, not just by his extended family, but by the many friends, colleagues and neighbours who gathered to pay their respects at his funeral. To Joan, Dixie and all the family we offer our continued prayerful support.

Revision of Register of Vestry Members The Register of Vestry Members has to be revised annually during the month of February. This will be done at the start of the Vestry meeting on 2nd February. A copy of the 2015 Register of Vestry members has been available for inspection in church throughout the month of January. If you are new to the parish in the last year and wish to be included on the Register, please obtain the appropriate registration form from the Church Wardens or inform them of any changes to be made. The Register of Vestry Members is the list of those entitled to vote at the Annual Easter Vestry and is open to all subscribing members of the parish over the age of 18. The names of those who have passed away in the preceding year and those who have ceased subscribing to the parish for at least a year will also be removed during the revision of the Register.

Ash Wednesday and Holy Week Ash Wednesday this year falls on 10th February, and we begin the season of Lent with a service of Holy Communion in church at 7.00pm. Our Lent course will begin the following evening, Thursday 11th February. This year, we will exploring some of the themes from Bishop John Pritchard’s book ‘Living Jesus’, using a study guide provided in the book.

There will be five sessions in the Lent course on the following dates and themes: Thursday 11th February - Jesus the magnificent outsider Thursday 25th February - Jesus partner in prayer. (NB. We will skip a week on Thursday 18th

February to allow for the monthly healing service) Thursday 3rd March - Jesus, the world’s hope Thursday 10th March - Jesus in a world of pain Thursday 17th March - Jesus to the end of time. (NB There will be NO healing service this month)

Please join us on this journey of encouragement in faith through Lent. The timings of the sessions will be the same as that for our fellowship group running from 7.30-9.00pm, with refreshments to follow.

Holy Week 21st- 25th March Rev. Colin Hall-Thompson, Chaplain to the Mission to Seafarers, will be our speaker throughout Holy Week. There will be a service each evening in church at 7.30pm and, as always, the service on Maundy Thursday will be Holy Communion. Colin has sent me a series of titles with a definite ‘sea’ theme, and it looks to be an intriguing and stimulating set of reflections for Holy Week. Further details will be in our March magazine.

Bishop’s Lent Course The theme of the Bishop’s Lent course this year is ‘Grace’. As in previous years, there are two sessions repeated in three venues across the Diocese and each evening begins at 7.30pm.

The dates and venues are as follows. Session 1 - Tuesday 9th February. Jordanstown Parish Centre. Wednesday 17th February. Bushmills Parish Centre Tuesday 23rd February. Lisburn Cathedral. Session 2 - Wednesday 2nd March. Jordanstown Parish Centre. Monday 7th March . Bushmills Parish Centre. Tuesday 15th March. Lisburn Cathedral.

Places can be booked via the Bishop’s secretary, Mrs Rosemary Patterson on 90828870 or [email protected]

February Healing Services Our normal midweek healing service will on Thursday 18th February at 8.00pm. There will however be a further opportunity to share in the ministry of healing with the laying on of hands in February during our main morning service at 11am on 28th February. During the ministry of healing at this service, please feel free to come for prayer either for your own needs or for those of others, for whom you can stand proxy.

Women’s World Day of Prayer - Friday 4th March There will, as always, be two opportunities to participate in local services to mark this day. The morning service at 10.30am will be held as usual in Glengormley Methodist Church. However, it is our church’s turn to host the evening service for this annual event, and the committee have asked our curate, Carol, to preach that evening. The material has been prepared by the women of Cuba on the theme of ‘Receive children, receive me’ . The evening service begins at 8pm, with refreshments to follow in the church hall.

Church of Ireland Men’s Society Seldom has the CIMS had as good a speaker as Horace Reid, who gave a fascinating talk at our January meeting on ‘Betsy Gray, The Heart of Down’. His in depth knowledge of the 1798 Rebellion and the part played in it by the United Irishmen, Presbyterians and the Church of Ireland, was put over in such a way as to be both educational and entertaining. It was particularly interesting to hear of the part local people had played, particularly in the Battle of Antrim. A great night enjoyed by everyone. Tuesday 9th February brings us to one of the highlights of the CIMS year, the Annual Dinner, which will be held once again at the Templeton Hotel, and as always friends and family are cordially invited. Each year this has proved to be a very popular event in the Church’s calendar, and it is hoped there will be as good a response this year as there has been in the past. It will be a three course meal plus coffee or tea, and the price is £20 per person. There will be a choice of courses, and a sheet has been placed at the back of the church for names and selection. As the hotel wish to know the numbers attending very soon, anyone who wishes to attend is asked to put their name down ASAP. Trevor Gibb

Date for your DiaryVery advance notice for Pentecost Sunday, 15th May

The Rural Deanery of North Belfast is again planning a united evening service at 6.30pm on the evening of Pentecost Sunday for our mutual support and encouragement across all the parishes of the Deanery. All parishes will be suspending their own evening services to enable everyone to attend this service of praise, prayer and teaching. Further details will follow in due course, but please mark the date in your diary or calendar now.

Tuesday 26th January was our first meeting of 2016. We had a large turnout and were delighted to welcome three new members. Joan welcomed our speaker, Valentine Hodges, and her Mum Shirley. Valentine has been a beekeeper for the past ten years and is totally passionate about all her bees, which was clearly evident from her very informative talk. We heard about how busy these little creatures are and how important the number three is in a bee’s life. In the hive you will find three types of bee - the queen, the worker and the drone. A bee’s body is made up of three parts - head, thorax and abdomen. They have three legs on each side of their body and they will only fly three miles from their hive. Valentine explained how the queen keeps the colony together and the workers keep the colony going. Valentine also brought along lots of products produced by her bees - honey, lip balm, soaps and lotions - all with the healing power of her little bees. The evening ended with supper and a chance to purchase some BEE products. Sheila Harper

Recycling for Restoration Fund This month we raised £10 from books. We would appreciate it if clean clothing, including shoes (in pairs), hats, belts, handbags, bed linen and curtains (no duvets, pillows or cushions) are left in the church hall, and please do not put any other items, such as ornaments or books, in clothing bags. Scrap metal, including aluminium and steel cans (preferably in separate bags), electrical items, including leads, cables and any items with wiring attached, such as phones and chargers, can be left at 7 Glebecoole Park (please call Maurice or Doreen on 9084 4093 to ensure someone is at home before delivering items as bags left are liable to be taken by other collectors or draw unwanted attention if we are away at night. Also, please do not put any glass in bags of scrap metal. So, before you bin or kerbie, think recycle for the church - if in doubt ring us. Maurice Atkinson

Martin Residential Trust“In as much as you have done it unto one of these my children, you have done it unto me”

Matthew Ch25, Vs40 Many of you will already know about the Martin Residential Trust - the redbrick building between St Bridgid’s Church and St Bridgid’s Fold. I knew of it’s existence of course and how it was started by a former rector of St Bridgid’s, Jim Martin, but I had no real knowledge of the work which was being done there. Last week I visited for the first time. I was visiting Lorna Munn, who has just recently become a resident. Up until very recently, Lorna, now in her 60’s, lived at home with her mum and her sister. Sadly her Alzheimer’s has advanced and she is no longer able to walk and needs 24-hour nursing care. Her family were very concerned about letting go of her care, but on visiting the Martin Trust, their fears were alleviated. As I found out for myself, this is a wonderful facility; a purpose built building which was designed to meet the specific needs of the residents. It is open, homely, and most important of all, a compassionate and loving environment for the nineteen residents, all of whom have profound learning and physical disabilities. Some of the residents have been living there since the home opened in 1988. There is a tremendous ratio of staff per patient and it seemed to me that no-one was ever on their own, there was always a staff member close to them. There is a terrific sense of community and fun. The latest news from The Martin Trust is the opening this year of a new respite room service. I commend the Martin Trust, the residents and staff, to your daily prayers. Love in Christ, Carol

The Very First Valentine Card - A Legend The Roman Emperor Claudius II needed soldiers. He suspected that marriage made men want to stay at home instead of fighting wars, so he outlawed marriage. A kind-hearted young priest named Valentine felt sorry for all the couples who wanted to marry, but couldn’t. So secretly, he married as many couples as he could - until the Emperor found out and condemned him to death. While he was in prison awaiting execution, Valentine showed love and compassion to everyone around him, including his jailer. The jailer had a young daughter who was blind, but through Valentine’s prayers, she was healed. Just before his death in Rome on 14th February, he wrote her a farewell message signed ‘From your Valentine’. So the very first Valentine card was not between lovers, but between a priest about to die, and a little girl, healed through his prayers.
