An unidentified woman was smashedand killed instantly by a train at a rail-way crossing near Phase 2 at KhutsongSouth.The railway horror took place on 16

Decemberwhen, as far as can be surmi-sed, the woman was picking up somet-hing next to the railway. According to

the driver of the locomotive, the womanwas immensely frightenedwhenhehoo-ted. However, instead of moving away,she moved towards the railway.The woman was instantly killed. Her

body dismembered entirely. Bystan-ders of this incident are severely trau-matised. Residents continue to crossthe railway, as there is no bridge to beused, as it is still being constructed.

On 16 October last year, a horrifyingcriminal act was committed against a38-year old woman, Pastor Claire Ya-wothe.In the early hours of the morning

three men forced their entry into thehouse of the pastor. Ac-cording to the pastor, sheheard crackling soundsand, thinking it was thegeyser, nodded offback to sleep.But Yawothewas shortlywoken upby an un-known manin her be-droom. Sheimmediatelyshouted at theman as she jumped off thebed and the man ran outof the room. The pastorchased after the man whohad ran outside the houseand she locked the doorand attempted to call peo-ple, but no one responded with imme-diate effect.While she was talking on the phone

she noticed that the window was openand someone was trying to climb insi-de. Yawothe quickly ran to the windowin an attempt to block the assailant’sentry; but no sooner could she accom-plish this than she realised there wasmore than oneman. Themen smashed

her Frenchwindow; and at length, Clai-re was faced with three unmaskedmen, carrying dangerous weapons.The three men attacked the Pastor

and brutalised her by punching her inthe face, stabbing her with those wea-pons all over her body; hermain injurywas when they stabbed her in the right

eye. She was blee-ding in the head,eye and body whi-le praying for helpas the men conti-nued to assaulther for more thantwo hours. One ofthemenwanted torape her, but sheresisted so fer-vently, in spite ofthe pain, that heeventually stop-ped. They beather until sunrise,stopping only be-cause they reali-sed they needed tomake haste withthe transportationof the household

goods. They dragged the bleeding wo-man outside with an attempt to takeher to the bush where they said theywanted to rape andkill her because shesaw their faces. The Pastor foughtback, not giving up on the hope that shewould survive.“I heard a voice insideme saying that

I will make it and live to tell the story,”Yawothe told the newspaper. She

fought themenback into the house andas they were also panicking they deci-ded to start packing the goods whileone of themwas still attempting to rapethe woman. During this time a car ca-me to the gate and hooted, which frigh-tened themen to flee the scene. The carhad left moments after hooting and re-turned. The driver was faced with thegruesome and shocking discovery of abrutalised, bleeding woman lying hel-pless on the floor amidst a house in ut-ter disarray: the attackers even usedfurniture to beat the pastor.Her eye was bleeding tremendously

and shewas afraid shewas going to die,but she was taken to hospital by theman who rescued her. She was in hos-pital for three weeks and a case of hou-se break-in, attemptedmurder, assaultand theft was opened by the police. Thecase continues to be investigated, butthe pastor feels the police have not putenough effort to find these criminals.Subsequently, Yawothe contacted

the Gauteng MEC for Department ofCommunity Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Ma-

lobane, to help her obtain another in-vestigating officer to intervene on thecase since there has been no progress.The case was handed over to ColonelMokoena and his team and throughthorough investigative methods two ofthe men were arrested on Thursday, 8January; one of whom had alreadybeen arrested on 30 November 2014during another house break-in inci-dent. The men were denied bail duringtheir court appearance on the 12 Janu-ary.The pastor of Divine Fire Ministries

Peoplemust be able to feel free to work, liveand walk the streets of Gauteng wit-hout fear,” said MEC Nkosi-Malobane.Further investigations are being con-ducted by the police.

love has been highly misunderstoodand also misinterpreted. People thinkof love when it comes to “Valentine’sday” and such.Nowadays love is takenfor grantedbecausepeople say they lo-ve but their actions speak differentlyand I think it’s because they have lostthe complete meaning of it.The events that transpire on daily

occasions also prove that love is lac-king in our society. The spirit of Ubun-tu is no more and many live to satisfytheir selfish interests instead of caringand helping others. It is all about theindividual: “If I amokay andmy familyis okay then I don’t care about therest.”—This is a very selfishmentalityin which everyone has to fend forthemselves and it cultivates a cruel at-titude that is basedon themantra, “It’s

a dog eat dog world”. Everyone is focu-sed on what they want, which is notwrong; but what I am saying is, we arenot born to live alone. — We are socialcreatures, born to live andwork interde-pendently.We live in a so-called free-country, but

we are not free fromhate andmany soci-al ills; people still have a problem witheach other. This is reflected by the rateof violence in our devastated societies;and it is as if people do not know howto love any more. A joint venture between theNorthWestand Gauteng provinces, and their res-pective fire and rescue teams, the traf-fic department and the EMS, was initi-ated recently.The event was aimed at regulating

traffic during the festive season to pre-vent accidents on the N12. The eventtook place on 19 December and it wasa successful event as the different pro-vinces merged their forces to becomeone solid force. The Departments alsotook the effort to show that there is a

high level of care for South Africa’s ro-ad users and the campaign was alsomeant to evaluate the road issues. On11January, a severe hailstormcau-sed the residents of Ext. 5 problems.The weather was partly cloudy, but

the afternoon saw a soft rain rapidlyturn into a full hailstorm, which lastedfor half an hour.The streets were cleared as everyone

had to take cover and the storm was

rather unusual as it caused the streetsof the nearby community at Ext.5 toflood heavily. This is an ongoing issue,which has yet to be found a solutionand which affects the entire Khutsong

township. The storm water channelthat was recently built had also beenflooded due to the hailstorm andwaterrushed through the tunnels for severalhours after the hailstorm.

An incident involving a 33-year-old wo-man from Johannesburg occurred atthe Johannesburg Skydiving Club(JSC) in Carletonville on Sunday after-noon, 11 January.Apparently the woman experienced a

faulty opening when she deployed herparachute. The woman managed to pi-lot her parachute to the designated lan-ding area at the club and she landed sa-fely on her feet. However, moments la-ter, she called for help as she wasexperiencing pain on her back. The sa-fety personnel immediately summonedthe Emergency Medical Services andGerhard Bradnick of the Gauteng Pro-vincialEmergencyServiceswhoarrivedshortly afterwards and examined her.Upon Bradnick’s recommendation,

she was airlifted by the ER24 emergen-cy Helicopter to Milpark Hospital fortreatment. The woman was dischargedthe next morning and was not seriouslyinjured.According to the chairman of the

club, Eugene Potgieter, the woman is athome and doing well. A misunderstan-ding had taken place after the ER24emergency service had published an ar-ticle on theirblog stating that “... onarri-val of the ER24 paramedics on the sce-ne they found the patient lying on theground in the middle of the field … Itis believed that the woman lost consci-ousness while skydiving … [she] was ina serious condition after the rough lan-ding at the skydiving club In Carleton-ville.” — However, this was all confir-med to be incorrect information thathad been published by the emergencyservice andhasnot only caused the clubbad publicity but also huge concernamongst the woman’s family andfriends. The club subsequently tookthis up with ER24 and demanded thatthe article be retracted from the compa-ny’s blog. According to the Chief In-structor, Beverly Cosslett, the articlehadbeen retractedbyTuesdaymorning13 January.

The Carletonville Rotary Club held a special Christmas party for children at the KhutsongMain Clinic on 13 December. The 30 children who attended, each received a soft toy,doll or ball and also got lots to eat and drink. The club also had two jumping castleserected for the event.

doors in 2015, is built along a majorprovincial road that intersects with theN12, and to date, there are no roadmarkings, traffic signs or pedestriancrossings,” the DA’s Constituency Head

for Merafong, Ina Cilliers, told the He-rald at the time.When the newspaper visited the

school during thepastweek, no signs in-dicated thatmotorists had to slowdownor watch out for learners. In fact, the ro-ad to the school had not even been com-pleted. The Gauteng Department ofEducation’s spokesperson, PhumlaSekhonyana, also did not answer ques-tions about the work that still needs tobedoneat thenew facility. TheMerafongCity Municipality, however, indicatedthat it renders school patrol support toall schools in the area in which arrange-ments have been made. Work at a controversial road in Khut-song is not only still incomplete, butis also leading to safety issues.The Herald reported in August last

year that residents were baffled bywhat seemed to be a new road beingbuilt near Hlanganani Primary Schoolin Khutsong’s Extension 3. The roadin front of the school has also been dugup to such an extent that it cannot beused.When the Herald visited the site

again during the past week to see howfar the work had progressed, it did notseem as if much had happened sincelast year.Motorists wanting to get to the

school still had to use an alternativeroad as the road in front of the schoolwas unusable. Although the road hasbeen blocked off, the surface is looseand in one area it a sewage pipe is lea-king. Huge heaps of stones and gravelthat had been dug from the surfacewe-re piled on the sides of the road, inclu-ding onto a sewerage pipeline that hadto be repaired several times in thepast.A part of the pipeline was also dug

open by the new contractors while twosinkholes had caved in on the side ofthe road.The sinkholes, situated about 300

metres from the school, was by Tues-day not fenced and schoolchildrenrunning through the veld could easilyfall into them.A steady stream of sewage leaked in-

to one of the sinkholes, and large poolsof sewage-taintedwater blocked off se-veral alternate paths to the school.The sewage pipeline affected by the

work has caused much headache inthe past.TheHerald reported in 2011 that re-

sidents of the area started noticing se-wage leaking from various manholesalong this particular pipeline. As far ascould be determined, the pipeline wasonly built the year before and it wassuspected that the problems stemmed

from possible problems with the pre-vious work done at the site.Besides the leaks, the ground on top

of the pipeline started to sag in and alarge sinkhole formed at one of themanholes situated only metres fromthe school’s main gate.Although the pipeline was complete-

ly rebuilt at the beginning of 2013,parts around the ground soon startedto sag again and the contractor had tobe called back to repair the problems.At the time that the new work on the

road in front of the school started, theproblems with the pipeline had see-mingly been sorted out, with, as far ascould be determined, no sewage leaka-ges taking place at the time.“They told us last year that the work

would be completed in October.We do not know what is going on he-

re because we have not seen any wor-kers at the site since before the schoolclosed.It is very frustrating because the

school is opening tomorrow but westill cannot use the road.We also cannot understandwhy they

are building the other road in thisarea; it makes no sense,” one of the te-achers told the Herald on Tuesday.When the Herald contacted the Me-

rafong City Local Municipality aboutthe issue, a municipal spokespersonacknowledged that everything was notrunning as it should.“The Khutsong new roads project is

currently going on the area. Themuni-cipality, however, experienced pro-blems with the performance of thecontractor.The project is projected for comple-

tion during the end of March 2015,”a municipal spokesperson indicated.“The sinkhole in question developed

during December 2014. The geolo-gists from VGI who do geological eva-luation on behalf of the municipalityhad already closed at that point in timefor the festive season.The studies are due to commence

now during January, towards the re-habilitation thereof,” she added.

The Merafong City Local Municipalityrecently refused to acknowledge anyaccountability for the R1.4 millionlost during a government project overwhich it was supposed to watch in2010.The Herald reported last year that

a youth project valued at R1.4 millionheld no benefit to young people in thearea as virtually all the money disap-peared. Themoney or the project wasallocated by the North West Depart-ment of Social Development to an or-ganisation called the Merafong YouthDevelopment Forum (MYDF). A re-port, drawnupby the forensic investi-

gators, Phandahanu Forensics, on in-struction of the municipality shedlight on the widespread theft and cor-ruption that surrounded this project.Although the investigation was com-pleted in November 2011 and the re-port, marked as “strictly confidenti-al”, was handed back to theMunicipa-lity’s Internal Audit Department, itwas, as far as could be determined,kept quiet until the Herald publishedits findings in June last year. The sa-me report indicated that the munici-pality had to oversee the project. At le-ast one person that was involved inthe project is still working at the mu-nicipality while another who wasquestioned during the proceedings is

currently a councillor.During a recentcouncil meeting, which took place on27 November last year, an oppositionparty councillor, Mr Vusi Mcunana ofthe DA, again tried to obtain more in-formation about the matter. an opposition party councillor, Mr VusiMcunana of the DA, officially askedquestions about the vehicles currentlyused by the Speaker, Mr Ramothobi Le-theya, and the Executive Mayor, Ms Ma-phefo Mogale-Letsie, during the councilmeeting on 27 November.Mcunana wanted to know when the

vehicles were acquired, if they were ac-quired or rented during the past yearand whether the council purchased thevehicles or whether they are being ren-

ted.“If purchased, what was the cost per

vehicle? If rented, what is the monthlycost to the council per vehicle?” Mcuna-na further asked.He also wanted to know the reasons

thatmade it necessary to acquire the ve-hicles, “seen against the background ofthe Minister of Finance calling for costcutting measures across and govern-ment spheres”.“The Municipality needtoprovide safe andreliable transport forthe Executive Mayor and the Speaker.The vehicles used are part of the FleetManagementContractof theMunicipali-ty. For security reasons the specific de-tails of the vehicles cannot be provided,”the Acting Municipal Manager, Mr LRThibini, answered to Mcunana’s questi-ons on 18 December.

of the club for the past 14 years, toldthe Herald this week that this group ofdedicated members want to make theclub a drawing card for many golfersin the area again.The club’s previous committee left

when the club was closed in Augustlast year.Although the club house was vanda-

lised, it was opened again to players la-ter the year.“As a result of the vandalism, we had

to do a lot of repairs in October,”Mehlwana tells.The vandals broke out and stole

goods such as geysers and taps in themen’s change room after sawing offburglar bars at the windows fromwhich they gained entry to the club.Not only had everything that was sto-

len been replaced, the new committeehad also managed to secure extra es-sential items such as an industriallawnmower. Investors have also assis-ted with new modern furniture for theinside of the club house, while asmanyas 25 to 30 members, some of whomcome fromas far as Sandton, regularlytest their skills on the 18-hole course.“We really love this place, and wan-

ted to help the six employees put foodon their tables again.The club has a long history dating

back to its start in 1937.The course is now nice, we only need

newmembers,” Mehlwana told the He-rald. He did acknowledge that thereare somehurdles to overcome, such asthe fact that illegal miners sometimescome close to the club’s grounds.As a result of this, the club plans to

have the course fenced in some way.“There is a lot of talent that is still
