A grade 10 to 12 teacher who has con-tributed to the Letsatsing CombinedSchool’s good English subject pass ra-te has passed away.The star teacher, Mrs N.V.N Kondlo,

passed away due to natural causes on28 December 2014 and will be buriedon Saturday 8 January at Fochville.She taught at the Resolofetswe and

Boitshoko High Schools in the Pot-chefstroom area before continuing her

career at Letsatsing.Mrs Nkondlo was described as a ve-

ry dedicated, punctual, caring and lo-ving teacher as well as a professional.She has produced a 100% pass rate

and has contributed in a great way to-wards the school. She will be lovedand missed by her family, friends, col-leagues and also the students that shetaught during her lifetime of teaching,Her memorial service was held on 6January at Letsatsing CombinedSchool.

A string of horrifying accidents tookplace during the festive season and itwas regarded as one of the worst in re-cent years.“It was a black festive season,” one

of the paramedics on duty during theholiday, Mr Gerrit Bradnick from theAdvanced Rescue Services in Carleton-ville, told the Herald on Monday.In the first serious accident of the ho-

liday a van which was allegedly overlo-ad with stolen metal from mines in thearea overturned on 11 December. Thedriver and passengers apparently fledfrom the scene as they were not inju-red. The next day a sedan overtur-ned.Twomen who were injured and ta-ken to hospital.On 18 December one person died

and five others had to be rushed to thehospitalwhenaminibus overturnedonthe N12, one men died during the acci-dent.On 20 December several seriously

injured passengers had to be airliftedat yet another gruesome accident onthe same road. During this accidentone person died on the scene, anotherdied after being rushed to hospital andthe two patients who had been airliftedlater died in hospital.A man from Glenharvie died near

Kloof Mine on 21 December when hisvehicle rolled. On 23 December an 18-month-old baby from Carletonvillesustained head injuries and had to beairlifted after an accident that took pla-ce on the R501 road heading towardsParys.Later on the same day two men were

transported toLeslieWilliamsHospitalafter an accident tookplace on theN12.Another tragic accident took place on29 December after an 18 year-old boy,also fromCarletonville,was apparentlytravelling at high speed in DolomiteStreet.He lost control of his vehicle and it

hit a tree, smashing it so hard that thevehicle broke into two pieces. The frontpartwas on the street and the backpartof the vehiclewas stuck on the tree. Thedriver died at the scene.On 1 January a head-on collision in-

volving a vehicle and a motorbike tookplace between Blyvoor and Elands-rand.

The man driving the motorbike sus-tained serious injuries to both legs.Mr. Bradnick would like to thank all

the rescue teams and services for theircorporation during the festive seasonmainly, theER24, fire rescue team,Ma-ponya EMS as well as the Gauteng De-partment and SAPS who have assistedon all the scenes that took placethrough the black festive season.

God’s grace church here in Carleton-ville and for me that wasfulfilling, I also becameone of five ambassadorsfromGauteng to fight forcancer,” says Lesego.According to Lesego

Despite the fact that the national ma-tric results were lower than duringprevious years,many schools inMera-fong obtained excellent results.Carleton Jones High School again

excelled by obtaining 99,13 %, whichis the highest overall percentage of anyschool in the area. The school only hadone failure. A total of 78 or 68,42% ofthe 115 matrics obtained bachelor’spasses, which enables them to conti-nue with university studies, while31,57% obtained diploma passes,which enables them to attenduniversi-ties of technology. One learner, KagisoTlhabano, obtained six distinctions inEnglish (84%), Afrikaans (80%), Ma-thematics (74%), Life Orientation(80%), CAT (92%), Life Sciences (91%)and Physical Sciences (87%). His ave-rage is 84%.“We are very grateful to God for His

grace, our matrics for their dedicati-on, our supportive SGB and our mar-vellous teachers who really went theextra mile,” the school’s Principal, MsShanette Tiquin, told the Herald.

Very closely behind them is Hoër-skool Fochville, which obtained99,01% and also had only one failure.Altogether 72,27% of this school’s ma-triculants obtained bachelor’s passeswhile the rest obtained diploma pas-ses.Christina Johanna Botha is the

school’s and Merafong’s top achieverafter she obtained seven distinctionsin Afrikaans, English, Mathematics,Life Orientation, Physical Science, Bu-siness Studies and Accounting. Juni-tha Habig obtained five distinctions inAfrikaans, English, Life Orientation,Physical Science and Accounting.Carletonville High School also held

the area’s name high as the school ob-tained a pass rate of 98,5%.The school’s top achiever is Marisa

Jooste, who obtained four distincti-ons in Afrikaans, Business Studies,English (Additional Language) andMaths Literacy.According to the information availa-

ble at the newspaper by printing time,Wedela Technical High School had thehighest results for a school from a pre-viously disadvantaged area. The

school’s 79 matrics obtaineda 96%pass ratewith 22 obtai-ning bachelor’s passes.Badirile High School are

the stars of Khutsong after itsmatrics obtained a pass rateof 93,7 %. A total of 48 of thelearners obtained bachelor’spasseswhile 21have diplomapasses.Another school which ex-

celled is Thuto-Kitso Secon-dary School in Kokosi.According to the school’s

Principal, Ms Kgomotso Ma-biletsa, this year is the thirdconsecutive year duringwhich the school obtained apass rate of above 90%. Theschool’s 114 matrics had apass rate of 92,98%, with 35receiving bachelors passes,51 diploma passes and 20higher certificate passes.One learner, Bennett Dint-

si, obtained four distinctions in LifeOrientation, Life Sciences, Geographyand Physical Sciences. Another lear-ner had three distinctions.

“I am ecstatic about our results aslast year’s matric group was our big-gest ever,” Mabiletsa told the Heraldon Tuesday.Letsatsing Combined School also

excelled with a pass rate of 91,4%,with 41 of its learners achieving bat-chelors’ passes and 54 diploma pas-ses.Imfundo Secondary School, in turn,

also did very well by having a pass rateof 89,9%.Tswasongu Secondary School, in

turn, obtained a very good 87% passrate. According to the Chairman ofthis school’s governing body, MrThemba Wisani, matriculants fromthis school also obtained various dis-tinctions.Hoërskool Wonderfontein’s results

were also good, with the school obtai-ning a pass rate of 86%. A total of 32%of the learners obtained bachelor’spasses.The school’s top achiever, Lindsay

Williams, obtained four distinctions inAfrikaans, Life Orientation, Geogra-phy and Tourism.Relebogile Secondary School’s 112

learners obtained a pass rate of 71,5%, with 19 obtaining batchelor’s pas-ses, 40 diploma passes and 21 highercertificate passes. The school has onelearner with two distinctions.According to the school’s Deputy

Principal, MrMartinMothupi, the newsyllabus which learners had to dealwith lead to the lower results.

Residents of especially Khutsong had atroublesome festive season as waterproblems continually occurred.

According to a concerned resident ofKhutsong, Mr Themba Wisani, peoplefrom the township have been battlingthroughout the festive season becausethere was often no water at their hou-ses. “On 16 December we had no waterat all. During the rest of the holiday wealso often had to make do without wa-ter. If there is wa-ter today, you arenot sure whetherit will still be the-re tomorrow. So-metimes onlydrops of watercomes out oftaps becausethere is no pres-sure,” Wisanicomplained onMonday.

He added thatpeople staying atplaces such asthe Khutsonghostel have hadto deal with not having water for mostof the time since 2010.

According toWisani, themunicipalityalerted the community at times via aloudhailer that they were aware of the

problem and working on it. Despitethis, the problem was never completelysolved. Wisani’s complaints wereechoed by residents of Batswaneng andExtension 1.

In the meantime the Herald alsofound that waterwas still streaming outof the main water line between the mu-nicipal reservoir near Doornfonteinand Khutsong Extension 5 on Monday.The newspaper contacted theMerafongCity Local Municipality about the pro-blems.

“ There we-re two inci-dents duringDecemberthat contribu-ted to the wa-ter problemsexperienced,”a municipalspokesper-son respon-ded to questi-ons about thematters onTuesday.

“The firstincident tookplace when

oneof thepumpsat theKhutsongPumpStation failed towork and a service pro-vider had to go on site to do fault-fin-ding, and to fix the motor that burned.

“The continuous water supply pro-

blem is a direct result of vandalism andtheft of the telemetry systems at the re-servoir in Khutsong. As a result thepumps do not start and stop automati-cally to ensure continuous supply. Torepair the telemetry system is a costlyexercise which will once again be donein vain if the reservoir is not first secu-red. Fencing of reservoirs have beenidentified as a project that funding hasbeen applied for with MIG. Dependingon the availability of budget, the reser-voir will be fenced in this financial yearwhere after the telemetry can be repai-red/replacedand thepumpswill beableto work automatically, minimising wa-ter supply interruptions,” the spo-ke-sperson indicated.

“The second water supply problemwas encountered when the water sup-ply line atChiaweloTowerwas reroutedto address groundmovement. Thiswas

communicated to the community bymeans of loud hailing,” the spokesper-son added.With regard to the leakingmain water pipe, the spokesperson in-dicated that it consists of a special ma-terial knownas “HDPE”,which canonlybe repaired by a specialist plumbingservice provider that can do HDPE wel-ding. “Council has embarked on a pro-curement process to appoint serviceproviders on a contract basis that hasthe correct equipment and skills. Thereis an emergency bypass line that is cur-rently being used to supply water toconsumers. It does not have a detri-mental effect on the water supply of thearea.Temporary reparationswill bedo-ne on the pipe during this week, whereafter the bid evaluation and adjudicati-onprocesseswill dictatewhen theservi-ce provider will be appointed,” thespokesperson concluded.

For many pets New Year’s Eve wasa harrowing night after they werescared by fireworks.

According to Ms Marlene Howieof the Carletonville SPCA the orga-nisation picked up lots of straydogs following New Year’s Eve cele-brations.

“One can see that thedogs thatwepicked up are definitely not strayanimals but ran from their homesafter being scared by fireworks. Alt-hough it was not as bad as last year,when some people used fireworksin front of our kennels, there werestill problems,” Howie told the He-rald on Tuesday.

Howie toldHerald thatmanypeo-ple used fireworks in Carletonville.A lot of dogs are also missing inFochville after an increase in theuse of fireworks took place in thistown.

According to Howie, people who-se pets are missing must phone theSPCA to report their missing ani-mals. If this is done, SPCA person-nel can contact them once their petis picked up or brought to the ken-nels. People who contact the SPCAoften find that their pets have alrea-dy been handed in at the organisati-on.

A sinkhole that has been existing formore than six months in Khutsong’sBatswaneng Section has at last beencordoned off.

This sinkhole, situated near the in-formal settlements known as Shawelanear a water tank, was barred off with

plastic tape over the past festive sea-son. Local resaidents are relieved thatthe municipality is finally doing somet-hing about the issue after months of noresponse. The Herald has reportedabout the matter twice after residentshad raised theirconcerns. Residents ofthe area are hoping that themunicipali-ty will cover up the hole that has beensinking deeper after the heavy rainfallsthat had taken place. The sinkhole cancause huge problems as it is situatedright in front of theShawelawater tank.

Although the Gauteng Roads Depart-ment did some work to ease trafficproblems at the sinkhole on the R500-road during the festive season, the ro-ad has still not been completely repai-red.

According to a councillor living inthe area of the sinkhole, Ms Judy Ros-souw, workers of the Roads Depart-ment widened the dirt road serving asan alternative to the part of the R500during the second week of December.Later during the holiday the section ofthe R500 leading past the sinkholewas also partially opened to traffic.

“Employees of the Roads Depart-ment really tried to improve the situa-tion and also did much other work inthe area, such as repairing potholesup to just before Christmas,” Rossouw

tells.She added though that the main

problem of when the sinkhole will befilled up and the road completely re-paired is, however, still not solved.

“Although senior officials of the Ro-ads Department indicated in Novem-ber that the road will be repaired wit-hin six months, the sinkhole seems tobe growing bigger again. This will su-rely lead to a further delay in the finalrepairs,” Rossouw added.

At the time of theHerald’s visit to thesite on Monday barriers were neatlyplaced around the hole, enabling mo-torists to drive by it on the R500. Apart of the fence around the hole washowever down.

A liquor store in Carletonville wasrobbed last weekend.

On the afternoon of 4 January, ataround 15:30, two unknown mencarrying firearms entered the BPBottle Store on the corner of Dolomi-te and Reinecke Street in Carleton-ville. The owner, a Chinese man, wascounting stock at the time. His sisterwas also in the shop during the inci-dent as the shop assistant had goneout to buy food.

According to the police the rob-bers took out their firearms and de-manded money from the owner.

The thugs then pushed the ownerand his sister to the back of the shopwhere they assaulted themuntil theygave the robbers the keys for the sa-fe. The robbers then took all the mo-ney that was in the safe.

The thugs also pulled the employ-ee who had gone out to buy food tothe back when he returned to shop.

During the robbery a passer-bynoticed that something was wrongand immediately alerted the police,who rushed to the scene. When the

police arrived they noticed a manwho was standing by the shop andasked whether they could searchhim as he was carrying a bag.

The man fled to a moving stolensilver Honda Ballade and the policechased him to the vehicle.

When he jumped into the vehicle,the police pointed a firearm at thedriver, who stopped the car. The ve-hicle was searched and two unlicen-sed firearms were discovered.

Another police vehicle arrived atthe scene and the police found thetwo robbers exiting the premises.

They managed to catch one of thethugs while the other robber esca-ped by jumping into the owner’s ve-hicle. He sped off and could not befound by the police. The vehicle was,however, later discovered in AdorpStreet. A total of five suspects werearres-ted at the scene while the sto-len money was also recovered. By ti-me of the newspaper going to printthe police were confident that thelast thug who escaped would also befound. Cases of business robberyand the possession of unlicensed fi-rearms were opened.

Diving & Trimix courses in April lastyear and almost immediately startedsearching for caves with enough waterto dive in. During her search for caves,she got introduced to another cave di-ver, Renier Earle, who asked whethershe would be interested in diving atWetsgat at Delmas with him and afriend, Quintin De Boer (Editor-In-Chief of Divestyle Magazine). They ar-rived at this cave on 7 December atabout 05h30.“It was quite a task getting all the di-

Wes Wits Rugbyklub hou volgendeweek hul algemene jaarvergadering(AJV).Volgensdieklub sehuidige voorsit-

ter, Barney de Koker, sal die klub seAJV op 14 Januarie by Fiddler’s El-bow op Carletonville plaasvind. Ditsal om 18:00 vir 18:30 begin. “Almalwat in die klub belangstel, is welkomom dit by te woon,” nooi De Koker.

Die klubhet verlede jaar baie goed ge-vaar en alles is reeds in plek omweervanjaar te presteer. Die eerste liga-wedstryde sal op 11April teen die Po-lisiewees.Dit sal opWesWits se veldebeslis word. “Volgens vanjaar se liga-bepalings sal die meeste van die eer-ste rondte se wedstryde tuiswedstry-dewees,” het hy bygevoeg.
