Two friends are currently behind bars for the de-ath of a third friend.The three women, all in their twenties, were out

drinking at a tavern in Kokosi on Saturday eve-ning July 26, when two of the three decided it wastime to head home.The third friend,Masnonki Pitso, was unhappy

as she wanted to stay longer but eventually leftwith the other two.Heading home,

she complainedand fought withher friends aboutleaving.Upon their arri-

val home, a fightbroke out bet-ween Pitso andone of the othertwo friends.The women al-

legedly started as-saulting one ano-ther, whilst thethird friend deci-ded to interveneand break up thefight.

The thirdfriend took asmall bread-knifefrom the kitchendrawer, and be-cause she couldnot get the twoothers to stopfighting she stab-

bed Pitso in the back twice.An ambulance was called to the scene, but the

woman had already passed away as a result of the stab

wounds. The two remaining friends have bothbeen arrested and charged with murder.They appeared in the Fochville Magistrates

Court on Monday, but the case was postponed toFriday. Both remain in police custody, whilstWar-rant Officer Juice Tholwana of the Fochville SAPSinvestigates.

The week started off badly for severallocal businesses.On Monday morning, at around

11:00, staff members of another facto-ry, rushed into the premises of Carle-ton Recycling to warn of the 60 to 70striking NUMSA members approa-ching with sticks and allegedly actingextremely violent.“They warned that these protestors

were approaching and vandalisingtheir surroundings,” told Ms Anel Grif-fiths, one of Carleton Recycling’s co-owners. The fact that the staff at thisbusiness pulled all their vehicles intotheir premises in order to keep themfrom being damaged by the protestorswhom they thought would just be pas-sing by made no difference.Griffiths tells how the aggressive pro-

testors entered their private propertyand caused havoc.“They attacked our workers who we-

re working, dragging two of them downthe road and beating themwith sticks,”she tells angrily. “They also threatenedus.”The protestors allegedly ran around

the premises hitting the vehicles belon-ging to Carleton Recycling with sticksand breaking their windows. “At ano-ther business down the road, they evenset offices on fire,” she tells.When another co-owner of the busi-

ness tried to speak to the protestors,they hit him with sticks - a video recor-ding was made of this.“When we called Mr Deon Boqwala,

the Merafong Co-ordinator for NUM-SA, he said that wemust prove that theprotestors are from NUMSA, eventhough we told him that they were allwearing red NUMSA t-shirts and thatthe video footage is proof enough.”The Herald also contacted Mr Bo-

qwala who said that “NUMSA has haddiscussions with all the effected busi-nesses and given them a platform toraise any issues.”He continues saying that NUMSAhas

tried to accommodate everybody du-ring this ‘peaceful strike’.He said that businesses should

speak to the union and not try to black-mail it and that the biggest problem inCarletonville is that businesses have

never experienced this kind of reactionduring a striking period because therehave never been NUMSA offices untilnow.Boqwala said that the way their

members protest, by closing roadswith rocks and burning stuff in the ro-ads is how South Africans show theirunhappiness and that people shouldget used to this.He also denied knowing about any of

the incidents at the premises of Carle-tonRecycling or any of the surroundingbusinesses.Boqwala also sent a press release to

the Herald saying, amongst otherthings, “We are of the view that we stillhave a longway to go in order to liberateour workers in the entire Merafong(blacks in particular)”.He says that except for Merafong, the

strike is over and that NUMSA is notgoing to rest until justice is done to the-se employees.“While we were on strike we had an

opportunity of making an assessmenton the number of issues that relates totheir working conditions such as sala-ries and the manner in which they aretreated at their respective work pla-ces,” Boqwala said.“What we have discovered in our as-

sessment is that workers are still un-derpaid compared to the collective bar-gaining agreement.”Boqwala says 26 per cent of workers

earned below R4 000 per month, 44per cent earned between R4 000 andR5 000 per month, 36 per cent of wor-kers earned between R5 000 and R7000 per month and no single workerearns above R7 000.In one section of his release, headed;

“Racial Practices” Boqwala says that insome factories workers are dismissedfor joining the union, black workersare offered low wages irrespective ofthe work they do, workers are insultedand assaulted by their bosses, there isa separation of facilities such as toilets,showers, change houses and kitchens,that workers are forced to work over-timeorbe charged for refusing and thatworkers are locked in their factorieswhile working with no emergency exitroute.He raised various concerns about he-

alth and safety issues as well.

Detectives of the Fochville SAPS made a major break-through recently.

In January, Warrant Officer Rami Ramolondo and Con-stable Pitso Pholoalisema investigated an armed robbery ata casino in Fochville.

Amongst other things, the manager’s cellphone, her hand-bag and business key, as well as a lot of cash and belongingsof clients were stolen.

A case of business robbery was opened and police hadno leads until last week, when Ramolondo received valuableinformation. He followed up the information and was ableto prove that another woman, Ntombizodwa Lucia, whoworks for this casino was not only allegedly an accomplicein the robbery,but still had themanager’s cell-phone.

After a tho-rough investigati-on it came to lightthat a familymember of Lu-cia’s was allegedlyone of the robberswho received R14000 for his/herpart in the robbe-ry.

She was arre-sted for the pos-session of suspec-ted stolen proper-ty and defeatingthe ends of justi-ce, as she had gi-ven a full state-ment of the eventsunfolding duringthe robbery, kno-wing the informa-tion was false.

Criminals caused a lot of damage by stealing essentialequipment from the ElandsridgeLibrary.

“On Sunday afternoon, both thesecurity gates and a door at the en-trance of the library had been bro-ken open and computers, to the va-lue of R 30 000 were stolen,” toldWarrant Officer Peter Masooa,spokesperson of the CarletonvilleSAPS. Detective Constable Wy-nand Kruger is investigating thiscase. Anyone with information orwho saw anything must urgentlycall him at 061 435 2848.

An Ethiopian businessman of Kokosidied tragically last Thursday evening ataround 20:30.

The man was shot in the chest anddied next to his brother in what seemsto have been a planned robbery andmurder.

Two Ethiopian brothers who own astore in Kokosi were at their businesson Thursday evening, when two un-known black men entered their shop,posing as clients.

They were followedby another Ethiopian,who closed the shop’sdoors behind him justafter the brother, whowould survive the rob-bery, had allegedlyspotted another threeEthiopians he knewstanding just outsidethe door.

The surviving bro-ther tells that, as themen entered the shop,the Ethiopian allegedlytold the others to “Fi-nish him off.”

The two black menstarted demanding mo-ney, cell phones and thelikes straight after pro-ducing their 9mm fire-arms and pointed themat the brothers stan-ding behind the coun-ter.

One of the brothers refused to givethem money, which provoked the oneblack suspect to shoot him in the chest.

With his brother weeping over him,the man died at the scene.

The suspects fled with cash, cell pho-nes and they stole the man’s car, a silverVolkswagen Caddy bakkie, which wasparked outside.

The surviving brother was able toidentify the three Ethiopians who stoodand waited outside the shop for theiraccomplices and they were all arrestedand charged with murder.

Unfortunately the black men havenot yet been found.

The arrests of illegal scrap-metal collectors and dealers continues. Last week the Herald reported that28 arrests had been made with regards to the loading of scrap-metal in Blyvooruitzicht. By Tuesdaythis week, more vehicles loaded with scrap-metal had been confiscated by the Carleton ville SAPSand a further 11 arrests had been made. “These operations are ongoing,” said Warrant Officer PeterMasooa, Spokesperson of the Carletonville SAPS.

Sou dit niedalk beter gewees het in-dien wie ookal in beheer van Blyvooris, eerderdiebeddensenander bruik-bare items aan diegene wat dit regtignodig het, geskenk het as om dit te losom vir skrootmetaal gesteel te wordnie? Na die beddens nou heen en weerin vramotors gelaai is en deur laaigra-we beskadig is, kan dit net as skroot-metaal gebruik word. Indien iemandvroeër ingegeryp het, kon dit dalk viriemand die verskil tussen ‘n bed en ‘nkoue vloer gemaak het, of hoe?

Die afgelope paar weke het die Herald oor miljoene ran-de se wanbesteding by ons munisipaliteit berig.

Intussen is daar steeds elke week nog probleme watopduik. Hierdie week berig die Herald onder meer ooropgraderingswerk by die Khutsong sport-stadion, dieenigste formele sportgronde in Khutsong, wat na ‘n jaarsteeds nie voltooi is nie.

Die eerste ding wat baie inwoners sal dink wanneerhulle só ‘n berig sien, is dat dit hulle nie raak nie omdatdié wanbesteding nie in hul eie omgewing plaasvind nie.Iets wat sommige mense egter uit die oog mag verloor,is dat wanbesteding, hoewel dit nie in iemand se eie areaplaasvind nie, almal raak omdat dit ook hul belasting-geld is wat gemors word.

Baiemense in ons omgewing kry al hoe swaarder sooswat die druk van inflasie en ander probleme soos werk-loosheid hul lewens moeiliker maak. Ondanks dié feitis dit net die heel armstes wat nie nodig het om allerleimunisipale belastings en hoë tariewe te betaal nie. Diemeeste ander inwoners het nie ‘n keuse of hulle wil be-taal of nie.

Baie van die geld wat op plaaslike vlak bestee word,kom ook van die nasionale regering, wat hul inkomsteuit die belasting wat ondermeer deur die Suid-Afrikaan-se Inkomstediens gehef word, kry.

Geld wat deur die munisipaliteit en ander staats-in-stellings gemors word, is dus ons almal s’n, hoewel ditnie noodwendig bestee word op infrastruktuur of dien-ste wat in alle groepe lesers se eie woon-areas geleë isnie.

‘n Toename in projekte wat nie voltooi word nie asookdienste wat nie gelewer word nie, dui op ‘n plaaslikeowerheid wat in die algemeen besig is om agteruit tegaan. Dit is iets waaroor elke inwoner, maak nie saakwaar hulle woon nie, bekommerd moet wees.

Die komende Sondag, 3 Augustus, saldit presies 50 jaarwees sedert die kata-strofiese sinkgat byBlyvooruitzicht tal-le gesinne se lewens drasties veranderhet.

OpMaandag, 3Augustus 1964, is dieOosthuizen-gesin, bestaande uit paJohnny (35), ma Hettie (32), en huldrie kinders, Jacoba (12), Johannes(8) en Marianne (6), dood na hul huisin 29ste Laan in Blyvoor omstreeks02:00 die oggend in ‘n sinkgat gevalhet. Hul huishulp, wie se naam nie se-kend is nie, is hoogs waarkynlik ookin die ramp dood.

Die Herald het dié week met twee in-woners van Carletonville, wat sovervasgestel kon word die enigste nabyebure van die Oosthuizens was watsteeds in die omgewing woon, oor diérampspoedige aand gepraat.

Mev. Anna Kriel (76), wat op dié tyd-stip inSenatuswoon, het destyds saammethaarman,Karel en seuntjies Pieter(4) en Nicolaas (3) in die huis skuinsagter dieOosthuizens gewoon.Die huis

waarin hulle gewoon het, het halfpadin die gat geval terwyl dié van hul bure,dié McMaster-gesin, heeltemal saammet dié van die Oosthuizens in die gatverdwyn het. Nóg ‘n huis, wat ontruimwas na die inwoners as geval van krakete bang geraak het om meer daarin tewoon, het ook gedeeltelik in die gat ge-val.

Volgens Kriel, wat die gebeure steedsduidelik kan onthou, wou klein Nico-laas net so voor 02:00 toilet toe gaanen het sy die lig vir hom gaan aansit.Hulle was skaars terug in die bed toehulle ‘n lawaai, wat haar oorlede manaan die destydse koerant, ‘Die Vader-land, as “’n groot gedruis soos dié vanduisende perdepote” beskryf het, buitegehoor het.

VolgensKriel het dieBlyvoor-mynbe-stuurder hulle en van die ander gesin-ne wat ook hul huise moes ontruim,geld gegee om vir hulself klere te gaankoop. Die myn het hulle op die ou endR23 000, wat in daardie tyd ‘n aardigebedrag was, uitbetaal vir die skade wathulle gelei het. Kriel vertel dat sy steedsbaie aan die aand se gebeure dink, ver-al wanneer die herdenking van die da-tum waarop die sinkgat wat ingeval

het, nader kom. Sy het ook na die voor-val ‘n plakboek van koerantberigte ge-maak waarna sy van tyd tot tyd kyk. Syvang haarself ook gereeld dat sy steedssoms na goed soek wat saam met hulhuis in die gat geval het.

Although the Blyvoor sinkholewhich claimed the lives of theOosthuizen family and probablythat of their domestic worker at-tracted huge media attention, itwas not the sinkhole in the areathat had claimed the most lives.

The most catastrophic sink-hole incident on record oc-curred in 1962 at West-Driefon-tein gold mine, where the seven-storey-high screening, crusherand sorting plant collapsed intoa sinkhole and the 29 workerswhowere still insidewere killed.

As far as could bedetermined,none of the eye-witnesses of thisincident are still in the area.

According to some sourcesthe West-Driefontein crusherplant sinkhole was 55 m acrossand 30 m deep, while the Bly-vooruitzicht sinkhole was 150metres wide and 20 metresdeep.Bothwere formed in areasthat have been previously de-watered by mines.

In the case of the Blyvoorsinkhole, residents had beennoticing deep cracks aroundtheir houses and yards for sometime following a water leak.

For some time those with ex-tensive geographical knowledgeof the area have warned that wa-ter leaks, such as leaks frombroken sewerage or waterpipes, can eventually lead to

sinkholes.Fears have been voiced that

some of the areas where lowcost houses are being built aspart of the Khutsong South ex-tensions, might also be particu-larly prone to life-threateningsinkholes if water leakages arenot prevented.

Scientists and environmen-talists are also particularly con-cerned about the effects that there-watering of dolomitic watercompartments might have onground stability. It is expectedthe mines in the area will againbe re-watered when the pump-ing of underground water stopsonce the mines stop working inyears to come.

Blyvoor sinkhole not the biggest disaster

Nóg ‘n inwoner,mnr Schalk Steyn (63),kan ook steeds die aand van die Oost-huizens se dood goed onthou.

Hy was ‘n skoolseun ten tye van diegebeure en het saammet sy gesin langsdie Kriels gewoon.

Hoewel hulle huis nie in die gat ge-stort het nie, moes die Steyn-gesin ookdadelik na die voorval hul huis ont-ruim en is hulle na tydelike asbes-be-huising elders in Blyvoor geskuif.

Volgens Steyn het die aand se gebeu-re hom só diep geraak dat dit ‘n soortverligting is om weer na die jare daar-oor te praat.

“Die meeste van die gebeure kan eknog onthou asof dit gister was. Dit wasnet een helse oorverdowende geraas enchaos. Dit het geklink soos 100 lorrieswat klippe tip. Buite ons huis het daarsulke spookagtige stof gehang en jy hetmense hoor skree,” vertel Steyn.

“Ek glo die Oosthuizens is fisies opslag dood,” sê hy.

Steyn onthou hoe sy broer, Corrie,mnr. McMaster gekeer het toe dié eerssy motor uit die garage wou trek.

Op die ou end het McMaster die mo-tor gelos en was skaars saammet Cor-rie by die tuinhekkie uit toe die garageook in die sinkgat stort.

Ook onthou hy hoe van die mynbe-stuur later ‘n kabel oor die gat gespanen met ‘n kabelkarretjie naasbestaan-des van die Oosthuizens oor die gat ge-neem het om finaal te sien wat van diegesin geword het.

Hoewel ‘n magdom nuuskieriges la-ter na die toneel gestroomhet enperso-neel van oorsese televisiestasies ook la-ter hul opwagting gemaak het om oordie gebeure te berig, het baie inwonersso groot geskrik dat hul die area heel-

temal verlaat het. “Voor die tyd het onsalmalmekaar geken enonskinders hetoral gekuier. Dit was nooit vervelig ge-wees nie. Na die inval van die gat wasdié gees heeltemal gebreek,” vertelSteyn.Die liggame vandieOosthuizenskon nooit herwin word nie en die areawaarin die voorval plaasgevind het,Westdene, is ontruim.

Die gat is opgevul en ‘n monument islater op die koppie wat oor die gebieduitkyk, opgerig.

Die sinkgat wat die Oosthuizens selewens geëis het, het in ‘n dolomitiesewaterkompartement wat deur die my-ne in die area ontwater is, voorgekom.

Inwoners van die area het voor dietyd van ernstige krake in die grond ge-kla wat hulle aan die myn se bestuur

gerapporteer het. Die aand waarop dieOosthuizen-gesin in hul huis dood is,was die laaste aand wat hulle in diehuis sou span-deer aangesiendie mynbestuurhulle die volgendedag as gevolg vandié klagtes na ‘nnuwe huis souskuif.

Die Blyvoor-sinkgat het gewel-dige aandag vanSuid-Afrikaanseen oorsese mediagetrek en hetdaartoe gelei datdie area se myneendie regering be-gin het om meeraandag aan diesinkgat-problemein die area te gee.

Verskeie onder-soeke is na dieprobleme gedoenen ‘n nuwe organi-sasie, die VerreWesrandse Dolo-mitiese Wateras-sosiasie(VWRDWA), is in1964 gestig omonder meer diegrondverskui-wingsproblemewat in ontwaterdemyn-areas in onsomgewing plaas-vind, te hanteer.

Hoewel dieVWRDWA steedsbestaan, funksio-neer ‘n tegniese

komitee wat dit moes bystaan om we-tenskaplike bystand oor sulke proble-me te gee, reeds vir jare nie meer nie.

Although the Merafong City Local Mu-nicipality has allocatedmillions for theupgrading of some sports facilities inKhutsong, the work done at these ven-ues leave much to be desired.During the past week a concerned

community member, Mr ThembaWisani, showed the newspaper thestate that some of the facilities in thetownship are in. AtKhutsongStadium,work was started to upgrade the facili-ty almost a year ago. Despite this, it

does not look as if the facility will soonbe ready for use.“The ‘work’ done is an insult to us

as residents of Khutsong. All what theydid was to mess the place up,” Wisanitold the Herald last Thursday.Paving at the stadium is after a year

still not completedwhile patches of dy-ing grass canbe seenall over the soccerfield in the middle of the stadium.For some reason, the municipality

also decided to plant grass on the partof the stadium that was previously anathletics track.

“There is not a proper pitch for anysport here. It seemed as if they startedto spend a lot of money here withoutany plans,” Wisani lamented.After a year there as still no windows

A deep, fencelessditch is situated near the facility’s en-trance. As there is no gate to the stadi-um, children whomight wander in canbe injured if they should fall into thisditch. “The municipality planted a lotof expensive grass without first ensur-ing that there is water available. Howcan you spend so much money?” asksWisani, and pointed to a pipe by whichcontractors are getting water from anearby house. This is their only sourceof water.At the time of the newspaper’s visit,

this pipe was also leaking, a problemwhich can lead to the forming of sink-holes.In the meantime, the nearby Bat-

swaneng Stadium is also a mess. Notonly does the pavilion have no roof, butthe ground is also uneven. At the timeof the Herald’s visit, it seemed as ifsomeone was using the room underthe stadium as a place to sleep.“Last year the municipality told us

that Khutsong Stadium would be fin-ished by June this year,” the develop-ment officer of the Merafong City LocalFootball Association, Mr Hloni Kare-jane, told the Herald.He added that the only playable soc-

cer grounds in Khutsong are currentlythe dirt Spades and Khutsong Exten-sion 3 grounds.

Although matches are sometimesheld at another venue that has beenopened next to the Khutsong South Li-brary, players’ soccer balls regularlyget punctured at this facility. Despitethe Batswaneng Stadium’s dilapidatedcondition, it is currently the only facili-ty where children from Khutsong cando athletics. Various rocks and peb-bles at this stadium however make itimpossible to play soccer at this venue.“You cannot call Batswaneng a stadi-

um as it is only an open field. I cannotlet the soccer teams play there, be-cause the children will fall and breaktheir legs,” Karejane complained.“The Khutsong Proper Stadium was

totally destroyed during the anti-NorthWest community protests a number ofyears ago. To have a clear idea of whathas since been done at the stadium,one needs to understand the state ofthe stadium before rehabilitation,” amunicipal spokesman replied. Ac-cording to him a lot of work has so farbeen done at the stadium. This in-cludes the repair of the roof, painting,structural improvements and the re-placement of seats. He acknowledgedthat problems were experienced withthe grass since the connection for irri-gation was not in place at the time thatthe grass was planted and added thatsuitable irrigation equipment is in theprocess of being sourced. Paving thatwas done was removed on the insist-ence of the municipality since theworkmanship and quality provided bythe contractor was of a non-acceptablestandard. It is being redone at no extracost to the municipality. In the mean-time the excavation for poles for fenc-ing to protect players, change rooms

and ablution fa-cilities aswell as aticket office andcaretakers cot-tage are also be-ing upgraded.High mast light-ing will also beimproved.The municipal-

ity also indicatedthat it is planningto upgrade Bat-swaneng Stadiumin future. Thespokesman saidthat although ap-plications havelong been submit-ted for funding forupgrading themoney neededhas not been allo-cated as yet. Themunicipality will,however, contin-ue to apply forfunding.

Despite earlier promises from the Me-rafong City Local Municipality that itwould take on various issues of malad-ministration recently raised by thenewspaper, nothing seems to be happe-ning.One of the issues raised by the news-

paper had been the fact that minutes

of an audit committee meeting indica-ted that private investigators picked upthat a total amount of R28 093 903.79hadbeen irregularly spent by themuni-cipality between January 2010 and Ja-nuary 2012.After the newspaper asked questions

about this issue to the municipality, itwas indicated that the matter “wouldbe discussed during a council meetingin July”.Despite this promise, the newspaper

determined this week that the issuewas indeed never discussed during thepast month. Although questions aboutthis issue were sent to themunicipalityon Tuesday, the municipality did notanswer them.Another issue on which the munici-

pality is seemingly not taking further isthe huge amounts of money being paidto contractors for the cutting of grass.According to municipal tender docu-ments, Prosolv Construction and Pro-jects Management (PTY) Ltd was awar-ded the contract for cutting the grassin Carletonville and Blybank for R577035.05 per cycle. Despite this, anothercompany, D.P.M. Trading and Projectsand B. Serae Trading and Projects JVwas also awarded an amount of R577035.05 for cutting grass in exactly thesame area. Another company calledFace Of Earth was awarded a contractof R279 175.62 per cycle to cut thegrass Khutsong, Khutsong South andKhutsong Extension 5.The company Melisibongakonke JV

MESProjects was awarded a tender forthe total amount of R279 175.62 percycle for cutting the grass in the Foch-ville, Kokosi, Greenspark and Wedelaarea.Documents in the Herald’s possessi-

amongst other things that theMerafongCity Local Municipality did not fulfil itsoversight role into the project in wayssuch as undertaking periodic site visitsto ensure that the project was going ac-cording to plan.In the end none of the money was

used to benefit the community and tho-se involved in the project had still notbeen brought to book.Thenames of various peoplewhowe-

re in some way connected to the groupare listed in the report. Except for acurrent municipal employee, the nameof a current councillor in the MerafongCity Local Municipality is also mentio-ned.Although the newspaper heard this

week that external investigators werecurrently looking into problems at themunicipality, one of the alleged investi-gators, Mr Madie Bapela of the compa-ny MMB Consulting, denied that suchan investigation is taking placewhenhewas contacted by the newspaper.“We are only assisting the municipa-

lity’s Internal Audit Department,” hetold the Herald on Monday.

Rugbyspanne van twee skole in die om-gewing het die afgelope week met wed-stryde wat deel van ‘n groot toernooiis, begin.

Volgens ‘n afrigter van HoërskoolFochville, Jurgens Bence, het die Roo-depoort Rugbyklub se hoërskole-toer-nooi Maandag 28 Julie afgeskop. Diewedstryde word by die klub se veldein Roodepoort beslis.

Die toernooi het voorheen bekend

gestaan as die ‘Coke-reeks’ en wordvanjaar vir die 30ste keer by die Roo-depoort Rugbyklub aangebied.

Hoërskool Fochville het vanjaar driespanne vir die toernooi ingeskryf. Diéstaatmakers wat tydens die byeen-koms kragte gaan meet, is die skool sevoornemende eerste span, ’n ‘FochiesXVtal’ en ’n o/15-span. Fochville se Se-nior Span het vanjaar opgeskuif na dieB-afdeling van die toernooi en sy XV-talis in die C-Afdeling ingeskryf.

Hoërskool Carletonville het ook ’n

span in die reeks ingeskryf en ding indie C-Afdeling mee.

Die reeks het Maandag met gemeng-de welslae vir die Merafong skole beginna Callies in hul eerste wedstryd nael-skraap teen die span van Queens met7 punte teen 10 vasgeval het.

Intussen het Hoërskool Fochville seo/15 span ook teen Queens se o/15span te staan gekom en dié wennesrvan die Leeus se Klein Skole-beker met26 punte teen 13 getroef. Fochville Squash North Westleague team got off to a wobbly startin their quest to top the ReserveLeague for 2014 last week.

Pothefstroom’s Country Club No3 (PCC3) team hosted the Fochvilleteam for the first matches of thesecond round on July 23.

The evening started off on a goodnote for Fochville with both MarkMetcalfe and Gerhard Pretorius, ofFochville, overpowering their op-ponents Nico Geldenhuys and Ben-nie van Wyk by three games to nil.

Wouter Nel, of Fochville, thenlost to Freddie van der Colff inclosely contested games by nilgames to three. Gavin Haringtonthen secured the win for Fochville,by winning the first game against adevious Philip Schelbusch.

Gavin went on to win the secondgame, but ended up losing the thirdand the fourth game. At two gamesall, the fifth and final game wasmerely just for team points andpersonal pride. The two battled itout going into a tie break and suc-cessfully defended a match pointeach, but in the end Philip Schle-busch of PCC3 won the final gameand the match by three games totwo. Fochville returned home victo-rious for the night with 10 pointsto PCC3’s six. Currently third inthe league, by only two points, Fo-chville is aiming to close the gap asthey host Klerkdorp on July 30.
