Electrical Engineering student Fizza Ahmad Sheikh and her fourth-year Capstone team developed the First In Risk Evaluation (FIRE) System to help improve the safety of firefighting operations. By piloting a drone equipped with thermal imaging cameras, firefighters are able to measure heat intensity and identify structural dangers through a specialized graphic user interface.

The majority of our undergraduate programs include a co-operative education option (known as “co-op”) that provides you with the opportunity to gain full-time, paid employment related to your academic program. Study terms are alternated with paid periods of work in real job situations.

The Co-operative Education Office supports students with their job search, co-ordinates the hiring process and develops connections with potential employers. You can apply to the co-op program when you apply for your degree program at Carleton, or you can apply later in your studies (typically at the end of first or second year). To be eligible, you must be a full-time student with a specified minimum grade point average. Please note that certain programs also require prerequisite courses.

Other work-study options Many programs include a work-study component such as a practicum, field placement, field course, apprenticeship or research placement. Carleton also offers a new International Internship Program that connects students in all disciplines with internships worldwide for academic credit.

Academic performance in your previous studies is the main determining factor for admission to Carleton’s undergraduate degree programs. Secondary school graduation is the typical level required for admission to the first year of an undergraduate program. In some cases, you will also be required to present specific courses (prerequisites).

We recognize and accept national qualifications from most countries. Please visit: carleton.ca/international to see the requirements for your particular country or education system.

You will need to present: ■ Transcripts from all of your high school

and any post-secondary studies. Through the admissions portal in Carleton 360 (360.carleton.ca) you will be able to view any documents necessary for your application assessment. You can also upload a .pdf version of any requested documents directly to your application. If official documents are needed to confirm your offer of admission, they can be sent directly from the institution to Carleton University Admissions Services (see back cover for address). If you are in your final year of high school, you should submit mid-year or predicted results (in both the original language and translated into English by a certified translator).

English language requirementsFor admission, you will need to demonstrate that your knowledge and use of English are strong enough for studies in an English language university.

You can do this by: ■ Demonstrating that you have studied for the last

three years (full-time) in a high school, college, or university in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom or any other country in which the primary language is English and where the language of instruction in the relevant institution was exclusively English

■ Submitting an English as a Second Language (ESL) test result

Depending on the score achieved, you may receive:

1. Admission with no ESL requirement: Begin your full-time undergraduate degree studies

2. Admission with an ESL requirement: Carleton will admit you to your degree program with the requirement that you complete up to three English language classes during your first terms of study

You do not have to apply for the English language classes—an offer of admission will automatically include an ESL requirement if your language score falls in the range outlined in table 2.

Prestige ScholarshipsStudents with an admission average over 90 per cent are eligible to apply for one of our Prestige Scholarships, our highest awards. These competitive scholarships are awarded based on both a student’s admission average and participation in community and secondary school activities (leadership, community service, and extracurriculars).

The values of the Prestige Scholarships range from $5,000 to $7,500 CDN per year and they are renewable based on maintaining a minimum A- (10.0 GPA) in full-time studies.

An application is required. Deadline: March 1.

Specialized Scholarships The Law Scholarship in Architectural Studies is a $10,000 scholarship awarded annually to an outstanding full-time undergraduate international student entering the Bachelor of Architectural Studies. The scholarship amount is based on the applicant’s previous academic performance. These merit-based scholarships are renewable, meaning that if they are lost in one year, they can be regained in future years. Scholarships are renewable with an A- standing (annual GPA of 10.0).

Two living styles Traditional or suite-style rooms The majority of our rooms for first-year students are traditional double rooms, with shared washroom facilities. A limited number of single rooms are available for first-year students.

The suite style provides four-person suites (either two doubles or four singles) with a shared common area, washroom facility and small food preparation area (with fridge and microwave).

First-year residence guarantee At Carleton, a double traditional room is guaranteed to all new, first-year students entering directly from high school—provided they receive an offer of admission on or before May 15.

To confirm your space: ■ Accept your offer of admission ■ Accept the residence offer ■ Pay the deposit by June 8 to confirm your space

All Access Meal Plan First-year students living in residence will be enrolled in the All Access Meal Plan, which provides unlimited entry into the dining hall and $100 Dining Dollars, for use across campus.

For students living in suite-style residences, there is also a Reduced Meal Plan option, which offers seven meals per week and $450 Dining Dollars.

The residence dining hall sources food locally, accommodates dietary needs and offers an “all you care to eat” experience featuring a variety of meals cooked right in front of you.

From: Nigeria and Canada I lived in residence my first year and I would advise all students coming to Carleton for first year to live in residence. Trust me. My first friends were from residence—they were my podmates because I lived in res with five other people in a pod (suite). It was amazing. You do your own laundry and cleaning of course, but the food and everything else is covered. It’s much easier because you don’t have to think about rent or doing your own grocery shopping. You can just focus on school, your clubs and going to the gym. Everyone should live in res for first year because that’s how you get to know everyone and find your way around.
