(Continued on page 2)

Hello everyone. As we create this

newsletter, it is unbelievably hot

outside, but, it is far better than

mounds of snow , so we will take it.

Something else that was incredibly

HOT, was our Dancing with the Stars

event and Silent Auction. This year

marks the 5th Anniversary for the

event and it looks like we still have a

few more years of local stars and

starlets showing us what they can do

Welcome our New Summer Intern!

We are very excited to announce that we will have a summer intern that will work solely on designing a new website for us to take us into the future. Our intern’s name is Theodore Torkelson, and he currently goes to school at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Ted joins us officially on June 6th. Many of you will be able to meet Ted in person at our Twilight Run, or if you come into the office, or at some of our other functions. We currently are in desperate need for the Dream Weaver program that will help Ted to design our website and then help us to make updates quickly and in a timely manner. If any of you would be able to donate money for that purpose, or have an ability to purchase the program for us, it would be greatly appreciated.

Dancing with the Stars Results 2011 The Alzheimer’s Support Center of Rock County is very pleased to announce that the Fifth “Dancing with the Stars” event was a huge success. The big winners of the evening were Marcus and Shelly Scharine who danced Swing to “Hanky Panky” by Madonna . Their instructors were John Abrams and Samantha Ewert with the Tempo Dance Studio in Madison Wisconsin. The second position couple are Jessie Cutsinger and Matt Richardson who danced Cha Cha to “Beggin” by Madcow. Their Instructor was Lyndsay Larson, who instructs dance at the YMCA. Third position is filled by Jennie Krajeck and Joe Jimenez who danced Freestyle to “The Time of My Life” by Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes, and the Black Eyed Peas. Their instructor was Esther Turner. Other dance couples included Tabatha Jones and Zac Fowler, taught by Jim and Sandy Bishop, and Brittnay Wittnabel and Nathan Landau, taught by Ken Stroud of the Marx Dance Academy of Beloit. Ken was assisted by Dani Gadjosik..

The “Voter’s Choice” award went to Jessie Cutsinger and Matt Richardson. The Alzheimer’s Support Center would like to thank the sponsors, dancers, instructors, and volunteers for helping to make the evening a memorable one. Many hours were donated in preparation for the event, and the audience and the Alzheimer’s Support Center reaped the benefits, culminating in a won-derful program for everyone. Thank you to all who donated items for the Silent Auction. This year The Support Center also hosted a wonderful Silent Auction , that helped boost funds for the organization. Many happy people left the evening with a themed basket at a great price!

The Alzheimer’s Support Center is not affiliated with any other organization and all proceeds stay in the Rock County area. All money raised stays in our community. The Alzheimer’s Support center is in it’s 13

th year, and we look ahead to the future where they will continue to provide services for families,

caregivers and those who have Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Hello! My name is Dana MacFarlane and I

am the new LEEPS Volunteer Coordinator. I

was hired as part of a State and Federal

Grant along with the Administration on Aging.

LEEPS (Language Enriched Exercise Plus

Socialization) is a program aimed at

matching people with Alzheimer’s disease

with a volunteer from their community who

will excercise with them and accompany

them on outings in the community for volun-

teer activities and social enjoyment. LEEPS is a research project intended to

replicate the successful study performed at the University of Phoenix using the

same methods. The study showed people with Alzheimer’s disease who

participated experienced improved physical fitness and mood. I am extremely

excited to introduce this program to Rock County and have been working hard to

get the word out.

Although I am new to LEEPS and the Alzheimer’s Support Center; I have high

hopes that my compassion for helping others and experience with Alzheimer’s

personally will show through the successful development of the LEEPS program.

I feel very privileged in having the opportunity to promote healthy living and

enhance the overall well-being of volunteers and LEEPS participants.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the LEEPS program?

Anyone with mild or moderate Alzheimer’s eager to improve physical fitness and

mood? Contact me!
