Festival Reminders

1. Students may not play the Festival piano between classes and/or during breaks.

2. Original copies of music must be provided for the adjudicator. Photocopies will not be permitted – students who ignore this rule will not receive a certificate. However, legal downloaded music is acceptable. A student may not share music with someone in the same class. Three marks will be deducted if music is not presented.

3. Music must be memorized to avoid a 3-mark deduction. (Note: if the student plays with the music, a

second original copy of the music should be provided for the adjudicator)

4. Each student must perform the piece (or movement) specified on the entry form. If a different piece (or movement) is played, a mark will not be awarded. Selections may not be changed after the entry deadline.

5. Entry fees will not be refunded under any circumstances.

6. Students should arrive 15 minutes prior to their class time. Late entrants will be called again at the end of

the class. Students will not be permitted to perform in any classes other than those to which they are assigned in the program.

7. Repeats may not be played. However, D.C. and D.S. markings should be played in order to maintain the

integrity of the piece.

8. Measure numbers should be marked at the beginning of each line of the music.

9. Cellular phones and pagers must be turned off during Festival classes. Cameras and video equipment will NOT be permitted under any circumstances.

10. Students, teachers and the public may not approach the adjudicator. Adjudicator’s decisions are final and

will not be discussed. Questions may be addressed, in writing, to Colleen Myles (Festival Chairperson).

11. The Festival Committee will determine scholarships/trophies – all decisions made regarding awards are final. See awards list in Festival Syllabus for details regarding eligibility criteria. Award recipients will be contacted within several days after the close of the Festival.

12. Certificates are distributed during the Festival. The Contemporary Music Achievement scholarship/trophy

and other trophies will be presented at the Scholarship Concert on Saturday, May 10th, 2014.

Carillon Music Academy Welcomes Our Adjudicators DAN WARDROPE Dan Wardrope has been playing the piano for 30 years and professionally for 20 years. He holds his A.R.C.T. from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada and a Licentiate degree from Trinity College in London, England. Wardrope is an active composer, producer, clinician and instructor. His CD of original compositions has sold internationally and receives radio airplay across North America including regular play on CBC radio. His students have won many prestigious awards and scholarships and many have continued on to professional teaching careers. Other students have developed successful professional performing careers in music including a major record label signing with Virgin Records, another with EMI Records, a Juno Award nomination, a B.C. Country Music Award as well as many television and radio performances. Several students have also won auditions to play for members of the Canadian Piano Six including Janina Fialkowska, Angela Cheng and Stephen Lemelin. Another student was recently awarded with a prestigious opportunity to play for internationally renowned pianist Lang Lang at a masterclass in Vancouver, BC. For thirteen consecutive years, Dan's advanced students have hosted, performed and sold out a benefit concert which has raised support for organizations such as the B.C. Cancer Foundation and World Vision. Wardrope has also directed and produced the recording of many commercial CD projects spanning a wide range of genres including classical, pop, jazz, and choral music. Dan also spends time teaching workshops and adjudicating festivals across Western Canada as a member of the Canadian Music Federation Adjudicators Association. He is also a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music College of Examiners. Mr. Wardrope teaches a private music studio with an extensive waiting list in Maple Ridge, British Columbia where he resides with his wife and three young daughters. SUSAN EVANS Susan Evans was born in Wales, where she studied piano from the age of five, and as a teenager played the cello in the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. After preparing for her LRSM in piano performance at the age of 16, she went on to study piano, cello and composition with Nigel Amherst, Michael Evans and Imogen Holst at Dartington College of Arts in Devon. After finishing graduate studies at the Royal College of Art, she went on to a career in film, working as a creator of animation soundtracks for the internationally acclaimed animator Paul Vester. She also worked as film editor on the feature-length Led Zeppelin concert film, The Song Remains the Same. She returned to her first love, music, upon immigrating to Canada, and completed her Bachelor of Music degree at UBC in 2000. She studied piano with Robert Rogers and Rena Sharon, harpsichord with Doreen Oke and composition with Steven Chatman and Keith Hamel. Her compositions have been performed by Elektra Women’s Choir as part of the Vancouver Festival of Music, by Capilano University Singers, by flautist Lisa Norman, and by other instrumental chamber groups and soloists at various venues in the Lower Mainland and Switzerland. She has performed as a pianist in collaboration with lyric coloratura soprano Lambroula Pappas, with the UBC Contemporary Music Ensemble, and with violinists Masako Matsumoto and Mary Sokol Brown. She has a thriving teaching studio in North Vancouver, and is on the executive of the North Shore Music Festival. She has recently re-discovered the joy of sharing her enthusiasm for music with young people, and plans to continue her busy music career for many decades to come, both teaching and adjudicating. CHRIS MORGAN Chris is a versatile guitarist with a Bachelor of Music Degree in jazz studies from Vancouver Community College and a diploma in classical studies from Douglas College. While attending VCC, Chris received the prestigious CHQM Scholarship Award for outstanding achievement. He completed the Professional Development Program at Simon Fraser University in 2012. Now, in addition to his experience as a private music instructor, Chris also enjoys teaching band and general music in the classroom. In addition to his studies, he also has many years of live performance experience in local rock bands. Chris enjoys providing a diverse learning environment, encouraging students to expand and excel with every kind of music.

BRIAN TAYLOR

Brian Taylor began his piano studies at the age of six and soon received the first of many awards and scholarships. Later, he obtained a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University Of Saskatchewan in Piano Performance. Mr. Taylor also holds diplomas in Jazz Studies and Popular Arranging Techniques. He has studied and worked with Robin and Marilyn Harrison as well as Merv Mauthe, to name a few of his esteemed teachers.

In Saskatoon, Brian was the head teacher of a large music school where he managed over twenty teachers, developed curriculum and held monthly seminars for the teaching staff. Before settling in the lower mainland, he was the Director of Education at a Toronto area music academy where he was instrumental in expanding the school from 100 to over 300 students in less than three years. Brian also was a highly sought after accompanist and performer, participating in many charity events and fundraisers.

In his thirty-four years of teaching, Brian has worked with all ages of students and genres of music. He has had many students win major scholarships to some of Canada’s top music colleges and universities, a legacy he is most proud of. Mr. Taylor has a vast knowledge of classical repertoire and contemporary styles. He has adjudicated extensively across Western Canada and Ontario since 1987. Brian enjoys conducting workshops for students and teachers, with topics ranging from pedagogy to improvisation. In 1995 he joined Carillon Music Academy, where he is a full-time piano instructor as well as the Education Manager of over twenty teachers.

FABIANA KATZ

Immersed in music in her native Argentina, Fabiana Katz moved to Canada at the age of 14, earned her B.Mus. in Music at the University of Calgary and her Masters of Music in choral conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Fabiana has studied voice with Heidi Klassen, David L. Jones, and John Mitchell, among others.

Whereas critics have used words like “chocolate” and “caramel” to describe the richness and shimmering quality of Fabiana’s voice, she has also acquired a range and an edgy and dramatic vocal timbre that make her performances both intimate and powerful. She has appeared as a soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, the CBC Radio Orchestra, and the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra, among others. She is also a professional singer with the Vancouver Chamber Choir , under the direction of Jon Washburn, and a founding member of the a-cappella trio Kallisto, which has received accolades around Canada.

As a recitalist, Ms. Katz focuses on repertoire which highlights her varied cultural background: Spanish, Latin American and Sephardic. Her recent opera experience include the title role in Handel’s Amadigi di Gaula with Opera Appassionata, and Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro.

Ms. Katz has been music director of choirs in Canada and the US, most recently Jubilate! Chamber Choir and Fusion Latina, Canada’s first and only ensemble dedicated to popular music of Latin America. Ms. Katz is a sought-after adjudicator and has sat on the panels of music festivals throughout BC, Alberta and the Yukon.

Ms. Katz’s knowledge of the singing mechanism and vocal technique is vast, and her intuitive and empathetic nature is of great value when teaching. Her approach to vocal pedagogy is holistic and organic, based on the natural and proper structure of the singing apparatus and efficiency of the mechanism, and is tailored to the individual and their particular issues at the time. Her first priority is always to reveal and ease tension in the body, thereby releasing trapped sound energy and achieving a free, more resonant voice and greater physical relaxation.

Fabiana lives in Vancouver, where she is much in demand as a teacher, conductor, and clinician.
