US Court Grants New Appeal Hearing for Buju BantonAlawyerforconvictedJamaicanreggaestarBujuBantonsaidthataU.S.federalappellatecourtagreedtoanewhearingonhislatestappeal.
TheGrammy-winningsingerisservinga10-yearsentenceforconvictionsoncocaineconspiracyandtraffickingchargesstemmingfroma2009arrestthatfollowedastingoperation.Hewasconvictedin2011afterhisfirsttrialin2010endedwithjurorsdeadlocked.
Inanemail,attorneyCharlesOgletreesaidthe11thU.S.CircuitCourtofAppealsinAtlantahadagreedtohearoralargumentsonthecase.
“Mr.BujuBantonwaspleasedtolearnthatthe11thCircuitgrantedanewhearingofhisappeal.Wetooarelookingforwardtotheappellateargument,”saidOgletree,aHarvardUniversitylawprofessorwhotookoverBanton’scaseinFebruary.

What is Junkanoo?JunkanooisauniquemusicandculturalcelebrationwithoriginsinWestAfricanculturethatiscelebratedinTheBahamasandFloridaandSouthCarolina.
VariousstoriessurroundtheoriginsofJunakanoobutthemostpopularlegendlinksthefestivaltothestoryofJohnCanoe,an18thcenturyAfricanprinceandslavetraderontheGoldCoastwhowassuccessfulindefendingFortBrandenburyfromtheDutchfornearlyfifteenyears.
HewaseventuallyenslavedhimselfandbroughttotheWestIndies,butevenasaslaveheremainedaleaderofhispeopleanddemandedthattheyhavetherighttocelebrateduringChristmas.
Early History of JunkanooSlavesinTheBahamasweregiventhreedaysofftocelebrate-ChristmasDay,thedayafterChristmas(knownasBoxingDay)andNewYear’sDay.Duringthistime,theycelebratedwithdancinganddrummingaswellastheexchangeofgiftsandfood.SlaverywasabolishedinTheBahamasin1838.
Duringpre-emancipationJunkanoocelebrationsandupuntilthe1950’s,Junkanoomusicians,calledJohnCanoes,woremasksthatconcealedtheiridentities.ThispracticefadedawayasJunkanoobecamemoreacelebrationofBahamiancultureandpride,especiallyintheyearsleadinguptoindependencefromGreatBritainin1973.
Music of JunkanooTherearesixsourcesofmusicinaJunkanooparade:•Drum-madefromsheeporgoatskinstretchedoverwoodenormetallicoilbarrels.TheyaresometimescalledGoombaydrumsandthereisaBahamiansoftdrinkcalledGoombayorJunkanooPunch.•Cowbells-usuallyplayedinpairsbutinmoderntimes,theyarefashionedsothatthree,fourorevenfivebellscanbeplayedononehand.Thecowbellsmakeaunique“kalik,kalik”sound,andthereisaBahamianbeerofthesamename.•Horn-theconchshell,whichcomesfromastapleofBahamiancuisine,foghorns,bicyclehornsandbronzebugles.•Scrapers-madefromvariousobjects,suchaswashboardsandspoons,bottles,ornails.•Brass-in1976,Junkanoogroupsbeganaddingbrasssectionstotheirmusicalarrangements.Thesebrasssectionsaddavarietytothemusic,playingwell-knownpopmusic,themesfromtelevisionshows,andevenhymns.
Costumes-Works of ArtCostumesaresuchanimportantpartoftheJunkanoocelebrationthattheirdesignsareplannedmonthsinadvance.Inorderforagrouptobeallowedtoparticipate,theircostumesmustfollowstrictstandards.AccordingtothejudgingstandardsoftheNationalJunkanooAssociation,nomorethansixmembersofagroupmayhavecostumesmadefromcloth.
DesignsarecutoutfromcardboardorStyrofoamandpiecedtogetherwithcontactcement,aluminumrods,andtirewire.Fringepaperiscarefullygluedonandthecostumeiselaboratelydecoratedwithbeads,stones,andglitter.Costumescanbecomeveryheavy,weighingmorethan200pounds,butcompetitionrulesstatethattheleadcostumemustbecarriedbyonepersonaloneandwithouttheaidofwheelsorotherdevicestoholditup.
ChoreographyDuringearlyJunkanoofestivals,dancingconsistedmainlyoffreestylemovesthatindividualdancersmadeupastheywentalong.Inthe1950’sRichardDeanintroducedadancecalled“TheShuffle”tothecelebration.PercyVola,leaderofonethemostfamousJunkanoogroups,TheValleyBoys,expandedonthisinthe1960’sandTheShuffleremainsoneofthemostpopulardancesteps.
Inthe1980’sgroupsbeganhiringchoreographerstoplanelaboratedanceroutinesandthispracticecontinuestoday.
Junkanoo TodayTherearetwomainJunkanooparadesinTheBahamas,oneonDecember26andoneonNewYear’sDay.ThelargestcelebrationisinthecapitalofNassauontheislandofNewProvidence,whereJunkanoogroups“rush”downBayStreet.CelebrationsarealsoheldinsomeoftheotherFamilyIslands,andthereisaJuniorJunkanooParadeheldinDecemberonBayStreet.Thecelebrationbeginsatabout1a.m.andrunsuntil9a.m.,atwhichtimeawardsaregiveninthecategoriesofMusic,Dance,andCostumes.ThemostimportantprizeisthehighlycovetedBestJunkanooGroup.SomeofthemostfamousandlargestJunkanoogroupsincludeTheValleyBoys,TheSaxons,TheRoots,OneFamilyandtheMusicMakers.

TheseideasresonatedamongpoorpeoplelivingintheghettosofKingston,Jamaicaandsothemovementgrewthereinthe1920sand1930s,mostnotablywiththecreationofPinnacle-adedicatedRastacommunityinSt.Catherine’sinJamaicabyLeonardHowell.Today,RastasarefightingtokeepfrombeingevictedfromthelandbytheJamaicangovernment.
ThenameofthemovementcomesfromRasTafariMakonnen,whowascrownedasemperorofEthiopiaonNovember2,1930.HethentookthenameHaileSelassieIandthetitleofConqueringLionoftheTribeofJudah.ToGarvey’sfollowers,SelassiescoronationwasadirectfulfillmentofEzekiel28:5andRevelation5:5,aswellasofastatementmadebyGarveyin1927,“LooktoAfrica,forthereakingshallbecrowned”.
Rastafarianbeliefscenteronlivinganatural,simplelife.Thereforetheyavoidallunnaturalandcannedfoods,aswellasporkandshellfish-adietknownasItal.TheybelievethatHaileSelassiewillreturnatJudgmentDaytoleadhisfollowersbacktoAfrica,wheretheywillexperienceheavenonEarth.
