About me

• Started career at Bain & Company, but moved into social enterprise in 2005

• Worked in various roles in social enterprise, primarily in microfinance and education sectors

• Regional Manager in charge of expansion for Unitus

• Social VC investor at Elevar

• Education researcher at AP RESt

• Entrepreneur at Hippocampus

• Consultant at Dalberg (internship)

• MPA/ID from Harvard Kennedy School; BA / BCom from University of Melbourne

What is ‘social enterprise’?

• Using market-based solutions and / or business principles to address social challenges

• “Fighting poverty with profitability”

• Can be for-profit, not-for-profit or hybrid

• A fast-growing sub-sector within ‘international development’

• Key moment: Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid by C. K. Prahalad

• ‘Intent’ is very important: in addition to generating a financial return, a core focus is the generation of some social return / impact

• Philosophy: the poor are not ‘beneficiaries’ or ‘charity-cases’ but rather are ‘customers’ and ‘clients’ and ‘producers’

What do I need to figure out?

• How close to the end customer do I wish to be?

• What types of functions interest me?• What type of lifestyle do I desire?• Any sectoral or geographic

preferences?




What are organisations looking for?

• A genuine commitment to the field / passionate about social problems

• Make sure you’re well read about the industry and relevant issues

• Belief in the ability of market forces to address development challenges

• Empathy and Humility

• Belief that poor are rational, capable actors, that they are not poor because they’re stupid or lazy, but rather because they don’t have access to opportunities

• Comfort with ambiguity

• Private sector experience / MBAs are highly valued

• Willingness to travel and get into the ‘the field’




How to get a job in the space

• Individual company websites – most post jobs• Set-up coffees or informational calls with people at different firms to learn
