What is ‘social enterprise’?

• Using market-based solutions and / or business principles to address social challenges

• “Fighting poverty with profitability”

• Can be for-profit, not-for-profit or hybrid

• A fast-growing sub-sector within ‘international development’

• Key moment: Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid by C. K. Prahalad

• ‘Intent’ is very important: in addition to generating a financial return, a core focus is the generation of some social return / impact

• Philosophy: the poor are not ‘beneficiaries’ or ‘charity-cases’ but rather are ‘customers’ and ‘clients’ and ‘producers’

Important debates in the space

• ‘Social enterprise’ versus ‘social business’

• Balance between different objectives

• Measurement of non-financial metrics, and whether SEs should be held accountable for these, just as firms are with financial results

• Role of philanthropy: Needed to reach poorest-of-poor or can market forces reach even the very poorest?
