Special Education and Accommodations
225 students receiving services› Ranges from AI to LD
2 Special Education Consultants on staff› Act as a liaison with home school staff,
parents, CTC staff and outside agencies› Monitor that accommodations are being
provided and documented by instructors and paraprofessionals
Role of the Consultant:
Consultants attend IEPC’s of new CTC students› Averages about 100 per year!!› Cover sheet/Student Information Sheet is
completed› Accommodations are noted and shared
with staff› Copies of IEPC are requested
Consultant’s Role Continued:
Meet with Paraprofessionals once a month› Monitor attendance› Discuss accommodations and review
documentation› Complete the Consultant Log Sheet
Accommodations: Students are taught to self-advocate
17 “reasonable”accommodations for CTC
Most difficult to accommodate??
Vocational Evaluation
Started out as a process for10th grade special education students in Ottawa County› Included a tour, ½ day testing, ½ day
observation› Limited to special education students and
10th graders only› In working with all the sending schools,
difficult to get students to CTC 3 times
Vocational Evaluation Cont:
Made changes to the established process with 10th graders› Began working with the 9th grade
population Thought informing students about CTC
earlier would educate them on skills/academics needed for success
Created a more “hands on” approach to testing using color groups
Created a math & reading assessment that reflected CTC’s requirements
Vocational Evaluation Cont:
Continued concerns:› Lack of follow through with home school
staff Allowing students to visit CTC for the entire
process Using/not using the report recommendations Students testing in 1 color group and
enrolling in a different color group Students enrolling who didn’t test at all 9th grade NOT able to have curriculum
flexibility
Vocational Evaluation Cont:
Where we are today……› 8th grade Destination
Open to all students (regular/special) “Open house”/scavenger hunt format Simple exposure to CTC options rather than
testing Targeted at younger audience before they
make a 4 year plan
And the results… WILDLY SUCCESSFUL!!!
4 middle schools participated
Will expand to 3 days and more schools participating this March
“Destination Success”
Students given a map and 40 minutes
Each destination on the card was stamped upon completing the objective
