Welcome to the Office of Career Services at When is it time to begin partnering with the Office of Career Services? Right now! Our office is more than just a place to go to find a job when you’re about to graduate—we’re here for you from the first day you arrive at NYIT until after you receive your diploma and join the ranks of proud NYIT alumni around the globe.

In your first year, Career Services can introduce you to a wide array of career possibilities and help you explore the link between your academic major and

career options. If you’ve already chosen your dream profession, we can help you develop the skills and strategies to get you there.

As you take each step toward earning your degree, the Career Services staff can help you make and re-evaluate career choices, write résumés, practice interviewing, build networking skills, help connect you with potential employers, and assist you in gaining real-world experi-ence. We offer 24-hour access to digital tools such as NYIT Career Net, which students can use to search for jobs, internships, volunteer opportunities, and on-campus student employ-ment. Tools such as FOCUS 2, UniWorld, Career Spots, and CareerSearch provide interactive information needed to make sound career choices as well as contact information for local and global employers. Career Services offers personalized one-to-one services with career professionals in a counseling setting and in ongoing career workshops, presentations, and guest speaker events.

Start building your career network with the members of the Career Services staff. When it’s time to begin your full-time career, we can connect you with challenging entry-level posi-tions at a variety of regional, national, and international organizations. Remember, we want to share in your success; let us know where you have been hired. If graduate or professional school is your goal, we can also assist you with your program selection and the application process.

This guide, along with our friendly, professional staff and our complete list of web-based ser-vices and resources, will prepare you for a great career. Our services are designed specifically for you, and it is up to you to use them. We look forward to working with you and welcome your feedback.

INTERNSHIP COVER LETTER GUIDELINES

Many positions require a cover letter. It should include a student’s schedule of availability for the semester he or she is seeking the position, as well as a list of areas the student has an interest in working.

1855 BroadwayNew York, NY, 10023

March 1, 2013

To Whom It May Concern:

I am currently a junior Graphic Design student at New York Institute of Technology seeking a summer 2013 internship with your company. I will be available to work at least three full days each week in the summer and am available to work some weekends. My primary interests include print and web design, and I would be interested in working in any department where I might be able to use these skills.

I have developed nine web sites in the last two years for family, friends, church and professors. Stylistically, they range from fun and trendy, to academic in nature, to professional. I am most comfortable using HTML, but I have strong working knowledge of Dream Weaver, Fireworks, Photoshop and Java.

My graphic design skills have enabled me to create a variety of print work. I have created a procedural handbook for the Science Fiction Club, posters and flyers for campus organizations, a magazine advertisement for my mother’s home-based clothing design business and a CD cover for my friend’s band. I enjoy graphic design because it challenges not only my design skills but also my listening and conceptualization skills.

I would like the opportunity to interview for an internship with your organization. If I can provide you any additional information, or if you would like to arrange a meeting, please feel free to call me at 212-555-6847 or email me at [email protected].

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to speaking with you.

Sincerely,

Jesse Smith

A Left-Justified Block Style Format is single spaced; double spaced in between paragraphs and has no indents.

1st ParagraphIdentify that you are seeking an internship, for which semester, what departments you’re interested in, and your schedule of availability.

2nd and 3rd ParagraphsIdentify your strongest skills and provide examples. Work-related skills are the strongest, eg, a graphic design student might provide examples of using Photoshop, instead of identifying that his strongest skill is that he works well under pressure.

4th ParagraphAsk for the interview. Be sure to include your contact information so that the company can contact you just in case your resume gets misplaced.

Finish with a line of appreciation and sign your letter. Leave four returns in between your closing and your name. Sign in that space.

Good Morning,

Please accept this letter and attached resume as an application for the clinical administrative coordinator position. I am a highly motivated and diligent individual and would love to contribute my passion and skills to this position.

I am very interested in the health profession showcased by my extracurricular endeavors. I am currently an intern with the Bronx Medical Center, where I am able to work well both independently as well as a cooperative team member. In this role I assist my supervisor with teaching HIV patients how to use an iPod in order to modify their HIV data information. I spend most of my weekends volunteering because I find helping others highly rewarding. I am bilingual in English and Mandarin which helps me assist with translation as well.

In addition, this summer I earned the opportunity to study Psychology at Yale University; in this course and through my research studies, my understanding of and appreciation for human social and emotional issues grew. I have the patience to handle complex and emergency situations with a sense of calm and self-confidence, and enjoy working in a fast-paced envi-ronment. All of which make me suitable for a health related environment.

I have also worked as a Graduate Assistant for the NYIT - School of Education Department, so I am familiar with office operations and database systems. I passed a computer certification examination during my undergraduate studies, so I have excellent computer skills. I also like to explore and learn new computer skills/software myself such as video editing.

In conclusion, I would appreciate the opportunity to interview with you in person to discuss how I might contribute to the position. I can be reached at the contact information provided. Thank you for your time and consideration and I look for-ward to hearing from you.

Best,

Shu Yo

Dear Ms. Jones:

I am a recent graduate of the Katharine Gibbs School, where I majored in Hotel and Restaurant Management and was an A student. I am currently a student at New York Institute of Technology and am obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management online. I am seeking a management position in this people-friendly and rewarding industry. I learn quickly, work well in troubleshooting situations, and love working with people.

I was employed at the Omni Berkshire Place Hotel, where I was given the opportunity to become a temporary Assistant Executive Housekeeper after only three weeks of joining the Housekeeping Department as Housekeeping Coordinator. I have learned a great deal about hotels and their makeup during this time. I have studied the union bylaws and have built great relationships with the union workers, delegates, and business agents.

Previously, I worked as a manager in the real estate industry for a midtown Manhattan firm where there was heavy client interaction; I managed a staff of 15 employees. The experience prepared me for the rewards and challenges of the hospital-ity industry. These and other prior experiences validate the recognition I received as being an asset to any organization.

Attached please find my résumé for your review. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications with you in a personal interview.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Adrienne FeltonEncl: Resumé Attached

To Whom It May Concern,

Please accept this letter and attached resume as an application for a position with Sharp Entertainment. In fall 2011 I had the opportunity to intern with your organization and would love to be reconsidered for a full- time position with the com-pany. I am a student at the New York Institute of Technology where I major in Communication Arts. I will complete my bach-elor’s degree in Communication Arts / T.V Production in December 2012. I believe the tasks I fulfilled as an intern with your organization make me a qualified employee candidate – not only am I familiar with the Sharp Entertainment culture, I have cultivated and practiced many of the skills related to the Production industry. During my time with the company, I had the opportunity to go on field production shoots for shows such as “Love/ Lust”. Preparing equipment and handing out appear-ance releases helped me gain knowledge of the basics of production and preparing for shoots. I also had the opportunity to transcribe footage for the “Call of the Wildman” and research ideas for other shows.

Most recently I have been interning with the Rachael Ray show where I have further developed my related knowledge and experience. This paired with my academics and time with Sharp make me a valuable candidate. I have the motivation, cre-ativity and interest to embark on a career with your organization. I know I will prove to be a competent employee who will contribute to your company’s productivity.

I would be delighted to meet with you and discuss my credentials further. Thank you for your time and attention, I look for-ward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Marisa Salerno
