My name is Melissa Gardner and I am a recent Psychology Master’s graduate

beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics are built. It is my

dream to one-day work with clients by means of planning, developing and executing

effective public relations strategies for conventional and new media.

What sets me apart?

As a four-year member of the Canisius College Women’s Basketball program, I feel as though I obtained many skills that set me apart from my peers. As a member of a division one program I was given several responsibilities not typical of college students.

Members of our program received training in how to handle the media, as well as brand representation. We were reminded daily that as student athletes, we were the brand. Promotion, interpretation of public opinion, and managing resources on both a large (NCAA) and small (school community) scale, all go into maintenance of an organization. As a Senior I became a spokesperson for the women’s program; one who’s responsibilities included training freshman on how student athletes were to successfully communicate too each other, their fans and audiences, as well as being a representative of Canisius during media days, camps, and volunteer efforts.

I became a leader and a hard worker while at Canisius. I learned how to persevere, and work effectively within a team in order to achieve a common goal. With the demands of busy schedules, athletes are forced to learn how to manage multiple tasks/projects and prioritize appropriately; I feel as though this is a skill that I have mastered.

I am sure that I can be an asset your company and await my chance prove this.

Attn: Hiring Manager

As a well-versed communicator with an experienced background in media communications and public relations, I am confident in my abilities to assist Edelman in its success. I believe a position as a Public Relations Intern will allow me to exercise my strong leadership, organizational and management skills to maintain the corporation’s objectives and ensure quality services are being promoted successfully and professionally.

I am a recent Psychology Master’s graduate and Division One athlete, with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Communications. My passion lies in Public Relations and as a result, I possess a tireless work ethic when it comes to clientele and meeting their needs. Previously, I have worked in various positions, which consistently involve the use of communicative tactics and brand marketing. During my experience college career, I have developed the proper tools and skills to be successful in the Public Relations industry. I have held prior positions working with both large and small-scale corporations from Cleveland Cavaliers to BET Networks and can adjust to any business environment. All positions rewarded me with an in-depth understanding of the important and varied behind-the-scenes work involved in media. I continuously strive to achieve and maintain a high level of efficiency, and my drive towards delivering a reputable quality of service is not surpassed.

As a four-year member of the Canisius College Women’s Basketball program, I also feel as though I obtained many skills that set me apart from my peers. Members of our program received training in how to handle the media, as well as brand representation. We were reminded daily that as student athletes, we were the brand, as promotion, interpretation of public opinion, and managing resources on both a large (NCAA) and small (school community) scale, all go into maintenance of an organization. As a Senior I became a spokesperson for our women’s program; one who’s responsibilities included training freshman on how student athletes were to successfully communicate to each other, fans and audiences, as well as being a representative of Canisius during media days, camps, and volunteer efforts. leader and a hard worker while at Canisius. With the demands associated with our busy schedules, I learned how to manage multiple tasks/projects and prioritize appropriately. It is these skills that I was able to obtain outside of the classroom during my four years at Canisius that I believe set me apart from other candidates.

I hope you'll agree that the combination of my academic training and my career experience in communications and public relations has provided me with the proper experience for the demands needed to work with Edelman. I would love to learn from successful and driven individuals that encompass the determination and competitive nature I possess. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please find enclosed my resume for your perusal. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely, Melissa Gardner

Accomplishments

The greatest accomplishment of my career was as the Event & Logistics Coordinator for the first ever Tristan Thompson camp in my hometown- Brampton, ON. Growing up,

9

basketball and the experiences associated with it had a huge impact on my life. In helping to successfully complete this camp I was able to give back to the children within my community. The experience was nothing short of amazing.

My responsibilities included: finding event location, negotiating contract payment, negotiating attendance fee for Tristan Thompson, advertisement, hiring staff, collection of payments, attracting local media attention, planning and conducting daily activities of camp. I also managed its social presence on multiple platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.)

Below is an article done on the camp, praising its success and impact on the community
