4. Hi, my name is Christopher Ivan Billups Jr. Im 20 years of age and I have a strong passion for anything involving art. I was born in Birmingham Alabama and live there the majority of my life. Since my younger days I have dealt with hardship, trials, and tribulations. Due to the divorce of my parents, my grandmother became my legal guardian when I was seven years old. I have five brothers and one sister, we were all split up and given to different members of our family. In Alabama I attended baker elementary, Bush Middle School, and Jackson Olin high to receive my education. In the beginning of my education, I struggled in school. It was hard for me to understand and comprehend a lot of the material given. Family members criticized me and fill my mind with false predictions about my future at an early age. Just after turning eleven, I trained myself to set my mind on impossible goals and to never quit even if the odds were stacked against me. It wasnt until then that my grades dramatically improved and I started to excel in school. Besides being smart, I unleashed my hidden talent of art in exhibitions and used it to gain awards/prizes of honor and recognition. Life as I stated in the first assignment of this course, I quote, life hasdealtmeits share of mixed experiences. With that said I will never let anyone or any obstacle keep me from becoming all I can be. I am honored to be in my current position and I will never fail.

Pardon me reader, I offer my left hand for a pairing. Lets for a moment journey back into a past era and really come face to face with the Ancient Art of Listening. Epictetus a Greek Stoic philosopher once said "We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak". Or maybe the famous quote from Charles C. Finn will better enlighten you, "I tell you everything that is really nothing, and nothing of what is everything, and do not be fooled by what I am saying. Please listen carefully and try to hear what I am not saying".
Listening goes beyond the ear as being an integral part of the peripheral vestibular system. Listening is a critical skill and when in combination with the entire body the skill can grant an advance level of wisdom once mastered. In our textbook Cornerstone, chapter 6 describes the Chinese definition of listening and how the culture applies the skill on a daily bases. Becoming an Effective or Appreciative listener can be accomplished simply by developing active auditory skills and disposing poor listening behaviors. A few things to keep in mind while attempting to reconstruct your listening skills are: alertness, devoting your undivided attention, and full-concentration. Like Ms. Nichole Garver stated in her assignment, Proper listening skills are indeed crucial within any business. Some major companies even use listening to increase their sales. Its been told that the majority of sales persons spend about 75% of the time listening and about 35% of the time offering opinions and solutions (great marketing skill).
A large amount of our modern day parents are starting to realize the potentiality and importance of having solid listening skills. Some even go far as to admit their small children into Therapeutic listening programs in an attempt to inject the ability into the childs developmental stages. Installing this skill at a young age can help them perform better in school and prepare them for the workforce. The point is, listening is very important and needs to be applied if youre planning to excel in life. So with that said, Improve yourself by becoming a professional listener.
