About the IAEA

Proposed by President Eisenhower in his 1953 “Atoms for Peace” speech. Established as a specialized organization under the United Nations in 1957. Focused on the safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear technologies. Headquartered in Vienna, Austria. Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

IAEA Career Levels

P-2 staff members participate in the execution of programs and projects, moving in the course of apprenticeship to higher levels of responsibility. Requires a university degree and two years of experience.

P-3 staff members launch and develop particular facets of the IAEA program and gain further professional experience. Requires a university degree and five years of experience.

P-4 and P-5 staff members either take on managerial responsibilities or carry out functions in a highly specialized field of expertise. Those with managerial responsibilities function as head of a unit or section. Requires an advanced university degree and 7 and 10 years of experience, respectively.

D-1 and D-2 staff members function as director of a division, participating in the preparation and execution of the IAEA’s strategy, managing a budget and assuming a leadership role. Requires an advanced university degree, 15 years of experience, and resource management experience.

IAEA Job Categories

Professional Staff: Regular staff professionals work at the IAEA for five to seven years to help the IAEA

carry outs its mission. There are approximately 2,000 IAEA staff, around 12% of which are Americans. Staff work at P-2, P-3, P-4, P-5 and D levels.

Intern: Interns must be at least 18 years of age and must have completed at least two

years of full-time studies toward a university degree. Individuals are eligible to apply for up to two years after the completion of a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree. Internships last from three months to one year.

IAEA Job CategoriesU.S. Sponsored Positions

Cost Free Expert: CFEs possess highly specialized skills and temporarily join the IAEA to help

implement a new project or program. CFE assignments are normally at the P-4 (seven years of relevant experience) or P-5 (10 years of relevant experience) levels, and appointments generally last for two years.

Junior Professional Officer: JPOs are entry-level employees who work at the P-2 level and obtain professional

experience while performing essential duties. The JPO program is intended to introduce a new generation to international civil service and the nuclear industry, while assisting IAEA with basic, yet essential, work. JPOs are under 32 years of age and assignments are from one to two years.

IAEA Employment Requirements

Required Qualifications: University degree in relevant subject (advanced degrees are highly advantageous). Relevant work experience. Fluency in English. Ability to work overseas in an international setting.

Desired Qualifications: Multilingual proficiencies (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish). International work experience. Good social skills.

Vienna, Austria

Culturally rich and close to other major European cities. First-place ranking for best quality of living in the world by Mercer (2009, 2010, 2011). Excellent public transportation system. Most Austrians speak some English.

Though the majority of IAEA positions are based in Vienna, the IAEA also has some laboratories and offices in other locations such as Seibersdorf and Monaco.
