TasTAFE Apprenticeship ExposDuring October, TasTAFE will be hosting Apprenticeship Expos at the Burnie, Alanvale and Clarence campuses.

Aimed at school and college students, parents – and, in fact, anyone of working age who is considering an apprenticeship – these expos are a great opportunity to find out all you need to know about different types of apprenticeships and how to get one.

The three expos are FREE events and include:

A panel dicussion – listen to our expert apprenticeship panel members discuss:

• why apprenticeships are a great career option

• what’s involved with an apprenticeship

• some of the pathways available to gain an apprenticeship

• how the apprenticeship system works – including the role of the apprentice, employer, Apprentice Network Provider and training provider.

Shared Stories – hear from a couple of really inspiring apprentices and employers as they share stories about their apprenticeship journey and what they’ve learned along the way.

Talk to our teachers – TasTAFE teaching staff will be on hand for you to talk to and answer your questions about apprenticeship pathways and studying at TasTAFE.

Apprentice opportunities – employers looking to recruit apprentices for 2020 will be at the Apprenticeship Expos with upcoming apprenticeship opportunities… so bring along your resume and have a chat to them about how to apply!

One way to search for an apprenticeship or traineeship is to register with a Group Training Organisation (GTO). GTOs hire apprentices and trainees and place them with one or more host employers over the duration of the apprenticeship or traineeship.

The role of GTOs includes:

• Selecting and recruiting apprentices and trainees.

• Taking responsibility for apprentice or trainee wages, superannuation, allowances, sick pay, holidays, other benefits and worker’s compensation.

• Supporting the apprentice or trainee and the employer over the duration of the apprenticeship or traineeship.

• Ensuring quality and continuity of on-the-job and off-the-job training for the apprentice or trainee.

GTOs are in every state and territory. Some GTOs specialise in specific industries, while others hire apprentices and trainees in a range of different industries.

You can search for the GTOs in your state and region on the National Apprenticeship Employment Network group training directory.

If you are looking for an apprenticeship or traineeship, as part of your job search strategy, it is important that you register with each GTO that hires apprentices or trainees in the career field that interests you. A GTO can help you to find your dream apprenticeship or traineeship!

If you secure an apprenticeship or traineeship an Australian Apprenticeship Network provider will be responsible for:

• Liaising with the employer, apprentice or trainee, the school if you start an Australian School-based Apprenticeship or traineeship and parents if appropriate.

• Conducting an induction with the employer and apprentice or trainee.

• Administering, lodging and updating the Contract of Training.

• Manage any apprenticeship allowances that apply to the apprentice/trainee and the employer.

• Providing support pre-commencement through to the end of the apprenticeship or traineeship.

It is important that you contact an Australian Apprenticeship Network provider in your region to see what support you can get to help you to secure, commence and finish an apprenticeship or traineeship. You should also find out what incentives an employer may be entitled to for putting you on as an apprentice or trainee.

Knowing what the employer is entitled to for putting you on as an apprentice or trainee is a good marketing strategy that may help you when searching for apprenticeship or traineeship. With this knowledge, you can advise employers what they can gain by putting you on as an apprentice or trainee.

You can search for Australian Apprenticeship Network providers in your region on the Australia Apprenticeship Pathways website.
