Strategy #2: Develop your Elevator PitchPrepare your 15-30 sec. story (marketing statement)
Who am I, What I do, How I do it and Why I do it • Co-op student/field/year of
study/type of experiences you have
What I’m interested in and passionate about • Looking for a full-time internship
in…• What we might have in common
What I can help you solve • How you will benefit
What I can offer • What I can do & how I do it

Ask for AIR time
• Advice• Insights• Recommendations
• Give some options • Do your homework• Keep your social media on point
Strategy #5- Use Informational Interviewing as a way to network
• Asking for AIR time does NOT mean asking for a job (eg: I would like to learn more about your field, can we connect for 20‐30 min?)
• Purpose is to gain relevant information about a specific organization, industry or position
• Have an informal conversation (with a plan)
• Uncover career paths you did not know existed
• Gather information
• Reach out, ask for help and learn to put yourself out there (you don’t know what you don’t know)
• Follow up afterwards with a thank you e‐mail and let the person know once you’ve secured a work term
Informational Interview Tips
Do your homework, be prepared & respect the
person’s time
Why they are hidden?
Don’t want to be flooded with applications so they start with their network
Jobs are listed directly on the company website or social media sites
Jobs haven’t been created yet. Can you provide the solution to a problem they are facing?
How can you find them?
Start targeting companies you’d like to work for & try to connect directly with the hiring manager
Spend a day in an industrial area targeting several companies
What to prepare? Leave your professionally presented Co-op package (Resume, Cover letter (with your contact information), Quebec Tax credit form (for Qc companies), personal business card/ Co-op Program Coordinator’s business card/letter)
Ask for a business card. Take note of who received your package/who will be reviewing this.
Important to follow up with the contact/key person by phone or via email within a specified time
Leave a voice message with a contact number
Be prepared for an impromptu interview
Send a thank you note/email & remind them why you are interested in working with them
Hidden Jobs make up anywhere from 70%-80% of the total job market
Establish a connection &
don’t take a NO personally
Strategy #6: Tap into the Hidden Job Market
