WELCOME TO THE SWEDISH CAREER FAIR

The theme of the Swedish Career Fair 2016 is Swedish sustainability - Green Sweden. Sweden is consistently ranked as one of the most sustainable counties in the world. Swedish companies are global leaders in green in-novation and in taking responsibility for their businesses, no matter where in the world they go. The Swedish culture is influence by the abundance of untouched nature – with more than half of Sweden´s surface being covered by lush forests. It is no wonder that preserving nature is important to Swedish people and companies.

As the world faces an environmental crisis, caused by un-sustainable energy and industry demands, we already have the technology to solve many of these problems. Swedish companies are industry leaders in many greentech areas - air and water purification, energy efficient products, waste recycling and much more.

Sweden has a tradition of leading the way in sustainable development for China; with environmental technology being among our biggest exports. Take the opportunity to meet the companies that take a stand for the current and future generations. Ask them how you too can become a part of something meaningful!

THE SWEDISH FIKAA SOCIAL CUP OF COFFEE

Swedes prefer not to translate the word fika. They don’t want it to lose significance and become a mere coffee break. It is one of the first words you will learn when vis-iting Sweden, right after tack (thank you) and hej (hello).

Fika is much more than having a coffee. It is a social phe-nomenon, a legitimate reason to set aside a moment for quality time. Fika can happen at any time, morning as well as evening. It can be savoured at home, at work or in a café. It can be with colleagues, family, friends, or some-one you are trying to get to know. It is a tradition observed frequently, preferably several times a day.

Accompanying sweets are crucial. Cinnamon buns, cakes, cookies, even open-faced sandwiches pass as acceptable fika fare. It comes as no surprise that Swedes are among the top consumers of coffee and sweets in the world – or that Swedes appreciate the good things in life.

YP INTERVIEWS

Dragon News is a member magazine, published by the Editorial Committees of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in China. The magazine is printed in 3,000 copies four times a year.

In each number Young Professionals interviews a young and interesting person working in or with Chi-na. __________________________________________

Zhang Ling’s hometown is Xinyu City, one of the small-est cities in China’s Jiangxi province, where he grew up with his mother and father. In 1986, Zhang’s uncle went to work in Linköping and at Luleå University of Technol-ogy in northern Sweden. Zhang recalls receiving many gifts from Sweden. His favourite gift was milk powder. During the 1980s, foreign milk poweder was a big thing for a kid from China, and he long dreamed of going to Sweden to drink milk. In 2007, Zhang got his opportunity. ...When Zhang returned to China at the end of 2009, he be-gan looking for a job at Swedish companies - without any luck....“There is a big group of people that have a lot of connec-tions with Sweden and would like to maintain that in China, but there was no community for them,” Zhang explains.

From the interview with Zhang Ling, Founder of Sweden Alumni Network in China (SANC)Dragon News - No. 01, 2016

Jiang was born in Zhanjiang, China, a city in southwest-ern Guangdong province. He moved around a lot, living with his cousins and close relatives. At the age of 10, he moved to stay with one of his relatives in Sweden. ...Like many youngsters at his age, his target was to go to university, but first he wanted a summer job and he applied for everything possible. Among them was Daniel Wellington, a newly established watch company. Daniel Wellington started business during Jiang’s first year of upper secondary school and quickly became “the watch to own”. “The watch I’m wearing today is actually one of the first ones they made and is no longer sold,” says Jiang.

From the interview with Johnny Jiang, Social Media Manager at Daniel Wellington in ChinaDragon News - No. 04, 2015__________________________________________

Guan Wang first came to Sweden as a 10-year old from the city of Harbin in northern China. His family settled in a suburb of Stockholm, where he began attending fourth grade. That was also the beginning of his interest in lan-guages. He had to learn Swedish and English as well as study Spanish as a third language and attend moth-er-tongue language classes in Chinese....After 4 years at Ericsson as a developer and 3 years at Education First as a senior product manager Wang de-cided to leave the safety of the expatriate lifestyle and, instead, test his own wings as an entrepreneur....Without a proper sense of whom he should turn to for investment capital or even a completed business plan, Wang basically started from scratch by getting in touch with other entrepreneurs and even travelled to Silicon Valley in the US for inspiration. After a month of network-ing, things started to fall in place and the actual work got underway, with a language-learning app he named Amanda.

The Swedish Institute (SI) is a public agency that pro-motes interest and confidence in Sweden around the world. Through strategic communication and the devel-opment of lasting relations with people, organisations and businesses in other countries we help increase Sweden’s contribution to international cooperation and develop-ment.

The Swedish Institute works actively to maintain relations with former international students and researchers. We do this partly through direct support to alumni networks around the world but also by supporting Swedish Embas-sies and Consulates in their work with alumni relations. One of the networks that SI supports is the Sweden Alumni Network in China (SANC) – a network of more than 1,000 Chinese former students and researchers from Swedish universities.

Alumni are ambassadors of Sweden. Many end up in influential positions with vast professional networks. They are connectors and as such a great potential resource for Sweden and Swedish companies abroad.About SANC, it is a non-profit, political- and religiously noncommittal organization for and by all alumni, who studied or worked in Sweden and now live in China. The purpose of this network is to develop and maintain a plat-form which can sustainably provide opportunities to its members and partners to improve their communications and can foster positive and mutually beneficial relation-ships between them. It not only services in the areas of education, but also culture, technology, business and art, with the wish to improve Sino-Sweden relations, espe-cially promote Swedish culture and education as startup. It is also building a talent pool for universities, institutes, and companies both in Sweden and China.
