Entry Cond i t ionsApplicants without a Mastersdegree may register for a Mastersby research with the possibility oftransfering to the Doctoralprogramme, subject to satisfactory

completion of a preliminaryprogramme (usually one year full-time or two years part-time totransfer to PhD, or completion ofthe MRes programme to transfer toa Professional Doctorate).

The Program mesThe awards of MPhil and PhD areachieved through a sustained pieceof original investigative researchand the presentation of a thesis. The university provides all itsresearch students with expertsupervision and facilities relevant totheir chosen area of research. Eachresearch degree candidate has asupervisory team of two or threemembers of academic staff, one ofwhom acts as the candidate’sDirector of Studies.

All candidates for MPhil or PhD arerequired to undertake acompulsory programme in researchmethods, which better equips themto undertake research. Theprogramme is free to all studentsaccepted for admission and isusually undertaken within threemonths of enrolment.

He has also published severalinfluential books, including ThePosthuman Condition (1995 and2003) and The PostdigitalMembrane (with Michael Punt, 2000), as well as many articles, reviews and papers.

Central to Professor Pepperell’swork is an investigation of thenature of perceptualconsciousness, carried out throughboth philosophical inquiry and thepractice of painting and drawing -

topics on which he lecturesinternationally. His paintings anddrawings are the result of intensiveexperimentation in materials andmethods designed to evoke a veryspecific, yet elusive, state of mind. Engaging in an ongoing dialoguewith art of the past, particularly the

Baroque and early Cubism, his works on canvas, panel and paperweave a complex web ofimpossible and contradictorypassages suggesting heroic dramaswith transcendental overtones.

Professor Pepperell’s currententerprise projects and industriallinks include the Venice Project, establishing links with the island ofLa Certosa and creating anaccommodation and studio base forCSAD staff and students, as well as‘Vision-Space’, working withPerceptual Technologies Ltd, todevelop and market a new form ofillusionary space.

CSAD has the largest discreetceramics centre in Europe, with a global reputation forits programmes that attractsstudents, practitioners andacademics from all over theworld.

Ceramics at CSAD is not confined toany category of art, design ormaking. It has always taken risks andrisen to creative challenges born ofcritical engagement and enquiry. Itswork has brought togethertraditional ceramic processes withnew and emerging technologies.

The philosophy of the programmeis to enable students through theirsubject specific experience asgraduates or professionalpractitioners of Ceramics. It willprovide opportunities for graduatesfrom alternative areas such as Print,Textiles and Fine Art, to challenge, reinterpret and extend the potentialof Ceramics within the 21st centurypost material culture. Students areencouraged to challenge norms andquestion conventions, and respondto these with answers andpossibilities that carry theirsignature of interpretation, drivenby their sense of curiosity that canbe experienced through things thatare made; are visible to be engagedwith and owned.

The programme encompasses thetechnical/conceptual exploration ofmaterial and processes, thepotential interfaces within theseand other subject disciplines. Theprogramme initiates the cross-fertilisation of practice basedmethodologies and the revealing ofnew contexts and methods ofpractice, encouraging creativityembedded within innovation andinvention and research. Thisthinking is underpinned by a criticaland historical approach and theexploration of personal themes andquestions through the making ofoutcomes.

Career Potent ia l > >At the conclusion of theprogramme, a very high percentageof MA graduates develop 'mixedportfolio' careers. They establish orcontinue their professional practice, enabled by the links they have madewith galleries or organisationsassociated with the visual art, or areable to return to their professionalemployment as teachers, lecturesand arts related organisations. Someelect to continue with ceramics atCSAD by undertaking a PhD.Current and recent AHRC doctoralawards have included the study ofthe following: The importance ofprocess and materials to ceramicspractice; the investigation of colour;within ceramic surface; thedevelopment of video as a tool forthe investigation of the creativeprocess; the relationships betweenceramics and sculpture.

Cardiff Metropolitan University wasone of only two places in the UKoffering this kind of qualification, and it is also accredited by the JNC(Joint Negotiating Committee) foryouth and community workers.”

“I’ve taken on extra hours of workoutside my own job to be able togain experience in a role which isdifferent to mine, such as spendingsome time as a school youthworker. In 2008, as a single mumand with only one A Levelqualification, Kathryn Hughescouldn’t have dreamed thatone day she would becomean MA university student.

After leaving high school in 2001with an A Level in Dance, Kathrynwent on to study a one yearfoundation course with a Cardiff-based dance school, and soon after, age 21, had her son, James.

Dreams of a career in dance had totake a backseat as she took a job inretail to make ends meet as singleparent.

Four years later when James startedfull-time school, Kathryn decided tolook into the possibility of re-starting her career in dance andapplied as a mature student to theCardiff School of Sport’s degreecourse in Dance.

Kathryn said: “I was lacking inconfidence when I applied to thecourse as it had been a few yearssince I had studied anything. I alsoworried that my qualificationsweren’t good enough and that Iwasn’t ‘academic’ enough to studyat degree level.”

Her fears were proved unfounded,as Kathryn was accepted on to thecourse and over three years

flourished as one of the topstudents; graduating with first classhonours degree in July 2011 andalso winning the Programme MedalAward for Academic Achievement.

Kathryn is now studying for an MAin Sport, Body and Society at theCardiff School of Sport, and hopesto go on to study for a PhD.

Speaking about her achievements,Kathryn said: “I’m passionate aboutdance and the undergraduatecourse at the Cardiff School ofSport opened up so manyopportunities for me. We weregiven the chance to go through theprocess of starting our own dancecompany ‘Camau Traed’ - fromfunding applications to organisingdance tours. I also got involved inthe university’s widening accessprogramme; working in communityprojects bringing dance to disabledchildren. That is something I woulddefinitely like to do more of in thefuture.”

“I regained my confidence, andhave also been awarded ascholarship to study for the MA. Itjust goes to show that anything ispossible and you don’t always haveto take the typical and traditionalroute to achieve at university. ”
