CARBON FOOTPRINT

As carbon management and corporate sustainability planning become increasingly established practices, more organizations are seeking optimal strategies to lower their environmental footprints.

If you are looking to elevate your sustainability performance, Nexus encourages you to take the first step with a carbon footprint assessment. This assessment generates organizational baseline data, measuring energy use and other sustainability metrics.

Today, companies in the region have a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of driving change and demonstrating to their stakeholders that they are implementing a more intentional strategy for reducing their impact on the environment.

WHAT CAN WE ACHIEVE? FROM CARBON FOOTPRINT TO CLIMATE NEUTRAL

A carbon footprint represents the total amount of climate warming or greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions created by an organization, event, or product. In order to reduce these emissions, we first need to measure them.

Calculating your footprintThe process kicks off with an initial consultation. This is an opportunity for Nexus to learn more about your organization’s activities, assess your emissions profile, and understand your sustainability objectives.

The next step is to gather data on your organization: Nexus will provide a list of data points for you to collect internally, such as the amount of energy consumed, where electricity is sourced from, and level of corporate travel. With this data, Nexus uses standardized, country-specific emission factors and established values to

determine how many GHG emissions are associated with the activity being reviewed. If data is not available for your country of operation, Nexus relies on the most recent figures from the IPCC and DEFRA.Nexus generates a report that provides the client a detailed analysis of the organization’s carbon footprint broken down by activity type. Nexus will also provide recommendations for reducing emissions and a debriefing session on the report results. As an additional value-add service, Nexus offers in-house training that can be integrated with the outcomes of the carbon footprint assessment.

Tackling carbon using standards and scopesNexus follows the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1:2006 guidelines for carbon footprint calculations, widely accepted standards that produce trusted results. The adherence to these international standards help to ensure that real progress is being made and that results are credible.

Under the operating principles of the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1:2006, carbon footprints are assessed under three emission scopes:• Scope 1: Direct GHG emissions that are owned or controlled by the organization. e.g. company vehicles• Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity. e.g. grid electricity• Scope 3: Indirect emissions that result from the organization’s activities but arise from sources owned or controlled by others. e.g. supply chain emissions

Calculations most accurately represent actual emissions produced when all three scopes are included into the assessment.Nexus encourages their clients to disclose emissions under all three scopes, and to share information with stakeholders on which ‘scope 3’ emissions have and have not been included in their carbon footprint calculation.

Tell the world about your goals and achievementsQuantifying your organization’s footprint is considered a proactive strategy for validating your sustainability efforts and will enable you to better communicate your progress to staff, customers and other key stakeholders. By baselining your current performance and following up with regular carbon audits, you will be able to set carbon reduction goals and to track performance for years to come.

In addition to offering carbon footprinting services, Nexus also sells carbon credits in support of lowcarbondevelopment projects. For organizations looking to go “carbon neutral” (i.e. no net climate change impact), offsetting is a great way to account for remaining emissions and support impactful projects in the developing world.

Why Nexus?By choosing Nexus to deliver a carbon footprint inventory service and offset for your organization, you are supporting an international NGO that for over a decade has been working across Asia to promote and scale clean energy, clean water, and clean cooking technologies. We work with local partners to serve low-income and marginalized communities. Our team has strong carbon related expertise as we have been providing technical assistance to projects across the region with combined experience of 20 years.

If you would like to learn more about how to measure your carbon footprint and offset your GHG emissions, please contact Chanvibol Meng, Technical Services Manager [email protected]
