Biological ImportanceBiological ImportanceBiological Importance

The Carac-an Watershed Forest Reserves is the habitat of rare and endangered fauna species such as Rufous and tarictic hornbill, Philippine raptors, mammals, reptiles and ampibians. It is also host of dipterocarp species such as Lauan, yakal and premium species such as narra and the hardest wood- mancono tree.

C arac-an Watershed Forest Reserves covers the

five parcels of watershed of Alamio, Buyaan,

Carac-an, Panikian Rivers and

Sipangpang Falls Watershed Forest Reserves. It

is one of the protected area in Caraga region

under the National Integrated Protected

Areas System (NIPAS) Act of 1992.

The Presidential Proclamation No. 1747 dated March 23, 2009

declared portions of the public domain of Alamio, Buyaan, Carac-an,

Panikian Rivers and Sipangpang falls situated in the Municipalities of

Carrascal, Cantilan and Madrid in the Province of Surigao del Sur

and in the Municipalities of Jabonga, Santiago and Cabadbaran in the

Province of Agusan del Norte as “Critical Watershed Forest

Reserves”.

Carac-an river is the main water source of Cantilan National Irrigation System with service area of 2,500 hectares and 2,745 farmers.

Alamio river is the water source of Cabas-an Communal Irrigation System with service area of 150 hectares and 124 farmer-beneficiaries.

Panikian river is the main water source of Panikian Communal Irrigation System with service area of 4,080 hectares and 300 farmer-beneficiaries.

Buyaan River is the main water source of Buyaan 1 Communal Irrigation System with service area of 225 hectares and 177 farmer-beneficiaries.

Sipangpang waterfalls is potential source for hydropower.
