AGENCYNEW DELHI: Days beforePranab Mukherjee demitsoffice, Prime MinisterNarendra Modi on Sundayvoiced his deep admirationand emotional bonding withthe outgoing President, say-ing he cared for him like afather would for his son.
Releasing a book, PresidentPranab Mukherjee-AStatesman, at theRashtrapati Bhawan, Modisaid he was fortunate that hecould hold Mukherjee's handwhile trying to settle inDelhi, and that there wasnever a meeting betweenthem in the last three yearswhen the president did nottreat him like a son.
"I am saying this from deepwithin. Like a father caringfor his son...," he said turningemotional. "Modi ji, you willhave to rest for half day,Pranab da would say. 'Whyare you running around somuch; you must cut down onyour programmes. You willhave to take care of yourhealth.' It was during the UP(Uttar Pradesh) polls that hetold me that win and losshappen all the time but willyou take care of your body ornot? It was not part of hisresponsibilities as the presi-dent but it was the humaneperson inside him whichcared for a friend," the primeminister said.
Mukherjee is an inspira-
tional figure, he said as herecalled his association withpeople from different walksof life who made an impacton him.
Mukherjee, too, expressedhis "deep gratitude andappreciation" for Modi. There has been divergence ofviews but the two kept thoseto themselves and acted inclose cooperation. "It did notaffect the relationshipbetween the president andthe prime minister, betweenthe titular head and theactual head of the adminis-tration," Mukherjee said.
Mukherjee said at times hewould seek clarificationsfrom finance minister ArunJaitley, who was present on
the occasion and has oftenarticulated the government'sposition on various issues, and Jaitley often convincedhim like an "able and effec-tive advocate" that he is.
The President said he canclaim with confidence that"the functioning of the gov-ernment was never dis-turbed, never stopped, neverdelayed".
Talking of himself, Modisaid he was a kind of personwho was always worriedwhat he would do in theevening if his work got fin-ished early.
The book-a photo essaybrought out by theStatesman group-he said itwould spotlight the humane
aspect of the president whois often seen by people assomebody always driven byprotocol. People would knowthrough photographs thattheir president laughs like achild.
"They will also see the self-confidence of our presidentin front of foreign digni-taries, however big in sizethey may be," he said in alighter vein, praisingMukherjee, a man of shortheight.
Lauding the idea behindthe book, Modi also lamentedthat as a country India wasnot "history conscious". Hesaid the Portuguese govern-ment agreed to India's longrequest of giving it a copy of
its correspondence related toGoa, once its colony, duringhis recent visit to the coun-try. Nobody preserved thecorrespondence here, hesaid. If an Indian scholar hasto do some research today, heoften has to go to the UK tolook for material as it is notin our nature to preservethem, he said.
Chronicling events is veryimportant for understandinga nation's history, he said.
