The 3rd annual Car HMi concepts & systems 2014 featured executive attendees and pioneers from OEMs & Tier 1-2s, Engineering & Software Firms to discuss strategic approaches, new technologies and ideas for improving automotive HMI. From June 26 – 27, 2014, we.CONECT invited an international audience of professionals, team
leaders and managers creating a community of OEMs & major automotive suppliers, engineering &
design professionals to discuss the strategic approaches, new technologies and ideas for improving
concepts & systems development in automotive HMI. On two days, pioneers debated on new ways
to manage an increasing HMI and application infrastructure in the car, and create the ultimate user
experience design.

CASE STUDY – Dr. Bryan Reimer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT Dr. Bryan Reimer set the focus of this presentation on driver attention with the modern mixed mode interface: Observations from field studies and implications for the future of automated driving and described, among others topics, interface design changes, voice command interfaces and understanding user perception and attention
CASE STUDY – Prof. Dr. Fang Chen, Chalmers University of Technology Prof. Dr. Fang Chen informed the audience with her Case Study “How can We Design Multimodal Interfaces Which Enhance Traffic Safety for Drivers?”
CASE STUDY – Dr. Yael Schmueli-Friedland, General Motors Dr. Yael Schmueli-Friedland presented a case study on in-vehicle multimodal interaction. She shared observations from a field study on how drivers combine speech and touch, going through topics such as the use of WoZ methodology for investigating cultural differences, design principles, learning patters, browsing lists by voice, use of touch, preferences and management of multimodal interaction.
WORLD CAFÈ – Dr. Stefan Becker, Ford Werke GmbH Dr. Stefan Becker led one of the World Café Sessions approaching the future of HMI architecture – what is the future display and controls strategy? He led the discussion through topics such as current architectures strategies, hybrid solutions of controller and touch, pros and cons of different solutions and future perspectives.
CASE STUDY – Ronee Chadowitz, BMW Group Forschung und Technik Ronee Chadowitz centered her Case Study around “Steering the User Experience”, whereby she gave valuable input on what comprises an excellent user experience, problems with existing automotive experiences, lessons learned from a variety of user research projects and recommendations for successfully developing future automotive experiences.

CAR HMi AWARD 2014
Charity Donation 2014 to Raise A Smile e.V.
By winning the CAR HMi AWARD 2014 in Berlin, winners not only received a trophy and
official certificates proving their project excellence, but the three first places also enabled
a 2,000 Euro donation sponsored by we.CONECT to a charity project.
This year’s prize money was donated to the Muzanga Education Project initiated by Raise A Smile e.V. to support underprivileged children in rural Zambia with mobile education. The organization teaches children in reading, writing and arithmetic and hosts workshops on important topics such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and hygiene promotion.
CAR HMi AWARD 2014 WINNER
Award Category HMI Design Innovation
In the second category “HMI Design Innovation” of 2014, experts dedicated the award to Scania Group & Volkswagen Research for their Project:
“HeavyDAS”.
The team had created a traffic jam pilot allowing the driver to turn his attention to secondary tasks by designing a frame around content devices, containing the information the driver needs to be able to stay in the loop of
driving without having to looks up from the screen.
CAR HMi AWARD 2014 WINNER
Award Category Innovative HMI Technology
For the premier CAR HMi Award 2014, the winners in the category ‘Innovative HMI
Technology’ came from NVIDIA Corporation and Preh GmbH.
NVIDIA presented their ‘NVIDIA Visual Computing Module (VCM)’ as an in-vehicle infotainment module for automakers and Tier 1 suppliers, standing out by delivering the benefit of platformization and bridging the gap between the consumer and automotive cycles.
Preh GmbH and their “Center Console Concept 2013” earned the jury’s recognition for a shared first place by combining different input systems into the center console and focusing on multimodal ways of intuitive function selection to enhance driver’s safety.
