IASCA: SOUND COMPETITION

IASCA (International Autosound Challenge Association) sponsors ayear-long series of nation-wide premier auto sound competitions. Themen and women who compete have the highest standards in audio. The ones who win are the best of the best. The committed. They’re our“think tank”—the people who suggest new products, and betterfeatures. The ones who help us keep raising the bar. It’s our provingground for quality and performance. 1

INTRO/CONTENTS

ISO-9001 CERTIFICATION

MTX was the first American audio company to achieve ISO-9001Certification. Awarded by Underwriter’s Labs (UL), ISO-9001Certification means that we have been through a rigorous auditprocedure that checks our entire product design and manufacturingprocess. It reflects our commitment to quality, and our focus onexceeding our customers’ expectations.

Specifications subject to change without notice.

SPECIAL FEATURESThe Road Thunder amplifiers each have a built-in crossover that makessystem design much easier and more efficient. It’s 18 dB/octave at 85 Hz,

switchable from low pass/high pass or full-range.

High-level inputs and Auto Turn-on. To better integrate withOEM head units, these new Road Thunder amps featurewhat we call “Smart-Engage”. It’s a patent pending autopower-up circuit that automatically turns the amp onwhen it senses the source voltage from the high levelinputs from the factory radio (this means you don’t haveto remove the factory head unit during installation --this means it’s easy to install this amp).

And, the wire harness for the high level inputs iscolor-coded, so it’s really easy to install this amp.

The Road Thunder amplifiers have a buffered, isolated full-range output, allowing you to daisychain amps to other subwoofers or to highfrequency amps. You can’t accuse us of notgiving you flexibility, now, can you?

BUILT-INFLEXIBILITYThe new 4-channel Road Thunderamplifiers are designed to trulyreflect the installations that aremost common for a 4-channelamp:

Scenario # 1 Running your frontspeakers off the two frontchannels, and bridging the rearchannels to drive a subwoofer. Scenario # 2 Running your frontspeakers off the front channels, and your rear speakers off therear channels.

Here’s what we’ve done.

The crossover is fixed at 18dB/octave at 85 Hz.

Rear Channels – The crossover onthe rear channels is switchablefrom full-range, high-pass, orlow-pass.

The bass boost is centered at 40Hz.

Front Channels – The crossover onthe front channels is full-range orhigh pass

And, the 4-channel Road Thunderamplifiers feature a new parallelinput switch that lets you run 2RCAs for 4-channels (like getting

a built-in Y connector).

PERFORMANCEBORN UNDER AGOOD SIGN. When you pick an amplifier, youwant a guarantee that it’ll deliver. The amplifier must provide ultra-clean sound with unmatcheddurability. A promise that you canturn it up and it won’t turn off.

That’s what you get with the MTXRoad Thunder amplifiers. We testeach amplifier extensively beforeyou ever see it to make sure itmeets or exceeds its ratedspecifications. Then, and only then,do we sign the CertifiedPerformance Certificate. It’s ourword that this amplifier willperform to specs—it’s like beingborn with a destiny for greatness.

3

See the color coding on this wire harness—we’ve pre-colored this to tellyou which is positive/negative and left/right—this means that you justplug in and go.

EASE OF INSTALLATION

MADE IN THEUSA

We proudly tell the world that these amplifiers are Madein the USA. In our factory in Phoenix, Arizona. It’s a signthat we are highly involved with nearly every step in themanufacturing process. That means that we control thequality, so that our customers are assured of a reliable,high-performance product.

CERTIFIED PERFORMANCEBefore you purchase an amplifier, wouldn’t it be nice to know for certain how it performs? For the last six years,MTX has been including a “Certified Performance” Certificate with each amplifier we build. Each amp is testedto make sure that it meets or exceeds its rated specifications. The technician writes the actual performance specs, then verifies the results with his or her signature.

Why do we go to all this effort? So you have a guarantee of proven performance. Don’tplay spec guessing games—ask for proof of performance.

SPECIAL FEATURESThunder amplifiers are known for superiorperformance, low to non-existent noise, andreally easy installation. Their performance islegendary.

The crossover is 12 dB/octave high pass, 24dB/octave low pass, variable from 40 to 200Hz. In low pass mode, the outputs are mono,at 24 dB/octave. It’s the job of the crossover tomake your bass sound like it comes from thefront of the car (we call it “bass up front”).Remember, you install subwoofers in thetrunk because that’s where the space is, notbecause bass sounds better coming frombehind your ears.

The RCA outputs are selectable, from full-range to high-pass or low-pass. This allowsyou to feed additional amplifiers.

Smart-Engage, Auto Turn-On. This patent-pending circuit automatically turns the ampon when it senses the BTL dc voltage fromyour factory radio. Makes installation a snap.

Individual Gain Controls to center up thesoundstage.

Giant MOSFETS (we’re not exaggerating—they’re huge). A larger MOSFET means powersupply stability, and a more reliable product.

8 Volt RMS Input—This large signalcapability allows for better integration withhigh voltage output source units, increasingdynamic range, and improving Signal-to-Noise ratio in the audio system.

Continuously Adjustable Thunder EQbass boost, centered at 40Hz. To severelyboost the low-end, and the attention you getfrom other drivers and innocent bystanders.

Unique Split Shield bottom plate design, reduces electro-magnetic interference toimprove signal-to-noise ratio and reducedistortion. This design is so hot, we patented itso others can’t leech off our genius. (Patent #5,521,792)

GUTSY SIMPLICITY

Remember your first car? It filled you with the thrillof driving. The Thunder 2-channel amplifiers willspark that same thrill.

The body. Shiny chrome logo with bright red LED.The rugged black heatsink that was inspired by themachined cylinder head of a classic, highperformance automobile.

Under the Hood: The Thunder amplifiers are made forperformance. Packed with features that make themusic sound crystal clear. With enough muscle tosatisfy your bass addiction.

AMPSINTRODUCTION

AMPS

THUNDER CERTIFICATEOF PERFORMANCEEvery Thunder amplifier is backed up by ourCertified Performance Certificate—so youknow exactly how your amplifier performedunder real world conditions.

If it doesn’t meet or exceed spec, it doesn’tship. No questions. No exceptions.

A word about power — when you pick an amplifier, it’s important toknow how it stacks up. MTX has chosen the most conservative (and webelieve, the most honest) way to rate our amps. We test it at RMS powerat 12.5 volts, and show you the spec for dynamic power at 14.4 volts(the IHF-202 Standard). That way, you can see how the amp is ratedunder the RMS “standard” and also how it performs under morenormal operation. Beware of specs that don’t tell what themeasurement standard is.

CERTIFIED POWER

Every Thunder amplifiercarries an industry-leadingthree year warranty—nowhow’s THAT for showing ourconfidence!

THE MOSTEFFICIENTBASSMONSTERS...CLASS DTECHNOLOGY.The advantage of Class Damplification is that it is highlyefficient (that means, theamplifier effectively uses thepower to drive speakers, ratherthan dissipating it as heat), andClass D amps have a verysmall footprint. Almostanyone can make a bigamplifier, but it takes smarts andcareful engineering to make asmall, efficient amplifier. Andalmost anyone can buy a bigamplifier, as long as they don’tmind sacrificing the whole trunkand the entire contents of theirwallet). But go back to what we

said on the first page of this brochure -- we think our customers are prettysmart. Smart enough to know that Class D is the technology of the futurefor subwoofer amps.

Class D amps run cooler because they take the low frequencies (thinkthunderous bass) and send power to those frequencies only whenrequired. In most amplifiers, the power is flowing constantly, even duringa musical passage where there’s no bass. This wastes power and causesthe amp to overheat much more quickly (that’s why you see giant heatsinksand noisy fans).

The crossover in the Class D amplifiers is low-pass, at 24dB/octave,adjustable from 40 - 500 Hz. The Thunder250D and Thunder500D featurehigh level inputs and Smart-Engage auto-turn-on. All Thunder Class Dmodels feature the EBC External Bass Control.

THE REVIEWERS SPEAK-UP

In reviewing the first Thunder Class D amplifier, the reviewers atCar Sound magazine had only good things to say... “MTX steps upto the plate with this Class D subwoofer amp and knocks one outof the park...True beauty is relative to efficiency and outputpower into 2 ohms. What a philosophy!... small enough to offera variety of installation options... keep up the good work, guys!”

The front stage in car audio means that if you shut youreyes, you can visualize the location of the performersand instruments on the “stage” during a liveperformance. And it’s the front speakers that re-createan accurate front stage experience. The Thunder6000Convertibles are one of the most flexible ways thatyou’ll find to add superior musicality andaccurate staging to your audio system.

We call these convertibles, but theyain’t no ragtops. They ship to you as acoaxial, with the the tweeter mountedinside the midbass cone. However, you can easily remove the tweeterand convert the speakers to separatecomponent systems.

The tweeter on the convertibles is asonically pure, 19 mm PEF dome, with a ferrofluid cooled neodymiummagnet. The tweeter swivels in anyconfiguration, and when it converts toa separate tweeter, you can mount itusing the flush or surface mountaccessories.

The midbass speakers have been highly engineered forsound quality. The cone material is an injection-moldedpolypropylene with pure titanium deposited on thesurface. Besides having a stellar appearance, this typeof cone construction contributes to the speaker’sdurability. The machined midbass front and back plates

continue the classic look.

The Thunder 6000 convertibles comewith a separate crossover networkthat mimics the cosmetics of theThunder amplifiers, right down tothe little oval logo. The crossoverslope is 12dB/octave, for smoothtransitions between the mid andhigh frequencies.

BUILT WITH THE MUSIC IN MINDThe Thunder8000 Component systems might just possibly be some of the finest work thatour MTX acoustic engineers have ever done. These new component systems are for theperson who truly appreciates the acoustic information that makes up a song. Andthey’re for the person who knows their music -- all the nuances, and wherethe performers were located in the sound stage. And once you’re that closeto the music, you expect the imaging and staging characteristics of yourfront speakers to be pretty exceptional. The new Thunder8000component systems will not disappoint. They are true to the music.

To achieve the kind of musical accuracy that you expect from the finestcomponents, we’ve designed the midbass with elegant, high-end diecast frames. These tooled parts make for a classic cosmetic statement, and they also result in a more durable frame. The cone material iscoated with titanium for a stylish, bullet-proof appearance. The machined front plates and back plates continue theMTX dedication to quality engineering and attention todetail.

COMPETITIVE SPIRIT OF THE YEAR

ALDS = HIGH OUTPUT+ LOW DISTORTIONIt’s the technology behind Thundersubwoofers. Take two cool ideas, put themtogether, and Presto — the whole worldsounds better.

COOL IDEA # 1FLAT ANDPROGRESSIVE SPIDERProgressive means that the spider’s stiffnessvaries across its surface. It’s like a shockabsorber—a loud musical passage is arough, rutted road. Better suspension, betterride, better sound.

COOL IDEA # 2.EXTENDED POLEPIECETeamed with the flat progressive spider, thismakes for a very linear, or straight, motion ofthe speaker. (Linearity is also engineering-ese for low distortion.) Note: This cool ideacombo is what makes your tunes musical—even while your retinas are detaching fromextreme SPL.

Kemp Hough, one of the MTX ThunderForce team members, won the“Competitive Spirit of the Year” award at the 1999 IASCA FINALS inGreenville, SC. This award is presented by CarSound Magazine to thecompetitor who exemplifies the spirit of teamwork and goodsportsmanship.

PICTURE OFSTRENGTHTake a good look at this speaker. The

gasket and surround are madefrom black NBR rubber (that’s

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber). Thisis a synthetic rubber that’sextremely resistant to ozoneand the effects of UV rays.Translation? Extremelydurable, with a sleek, coollook. The unique radius onthe pole piece alsominimizes turbulencethat occurs during largeexcursions, so when youturn the music WAY up,you won’t hear that“heavy breathing”sound (unless it’s yourown).

Why put all this effort andtechnology into theThunder8000 subwoofers?

One, because we can. Two,because it’s so cool. And

three, because durability iscritical for performance at high

SPL levels. When the SPL meteris peggin’ 150, you can’t have

your speakers ripping apart. (Thatwould NOT be a good thing.) So give

Thunder8000 your best shot, but beprepared—your head will likelyexplode long before these speakersever will.

SUBWOOFERS

BEYOND THE LIMITS OFPERFORMANCEQuite simply, serious competitors will choose Thunder8000because when it comes to winning, there’s no limit to howlow MTX will go—and we mean that in the best sense.

WOOF.Your first glimpse of these Thunder8000 subwoofers will giveyou a clue about their performance. “Aggressive” is oneword for it. The enormous 12-leg die cast aluminum basketwas made to handle the demands of enormous bass. Themachined front and back plates scream quality. The 12stiffening ribs on the injection molded cone increase conedurability and performance. Bark AND bite that lasts.

HOT ISN’T ALWAYS COOL.Asymmetrical Linear Drive technology, usedthroughout the Thunder series, promises highoutput with low distortion. And these subsare packed with features to help dissipateheat (repeat: “Overheated speakers areNOT our friends”). They have a ruggeddie cast frame, an enormous magnetstructure (102 ounces), and a 2.5”high-temperature, 4-layer voice coil(8-layer on the 15”). If you didn’tknow, more copper means betterthermal power handling. SpiderPlateau Venting refers to the smallvents around the frame that allowthe super-heated air under thespider to be exchanged with coolerambient air. All these features addto the cool factor—literally.

ENGINEERS GEEK-OUT AGAINOur engineers just might have out-donethemselves on this one. One of the biggestchallenges in spider design (the spider is thesuspension of the speaker) is to maximize the linearregion of the speaker’s movement. We performedextensive Finite Element Analysis (high-tech testing) onthe spider and found that the best design was a “five roll”spider design. We call it Computer Optimized ProgressiveRoll spider (COPR for short).

Thunder4000 mobile enclosures take the originalconcept—easily installed, portable bass for yourcar—and angle the backs and sides to ensure thatthese enclosures fit in almost every vehicleon the road today. There aren’t too many carsshaped like a square inside or out.

SINGLE-SUB WEDGEENCLOSURES

The T410 and T412 are single-sub wedgeenclosures with a small sealed enclosuredesign, for deep, low bass. 70 degreetrapezoidal shape makes the most efficient use ofavailable space. A 4 ohm mono design maximizesthe output capability of your amplifiers.

TRI-SUB™ ENCLOSURE

The T410X3 is a three woofer Tri-Sub trapezoidbass enclosure that conforms to vehicle seat backangles, making the most of available space. The Tri-Sub fits virtually all hatchbacks, and is aperfect fit for the new Camaros and Firebirds.

SINGLE-SUBWEDGEENCLOSURES

The T610 and T612 single-sub wedgeenclosures are real performers. Theyfeature a 70 degree trapezoidal shapethat makes the most efficient use ofavailable space in the vehicle. A 4 ohmmono design maximizes the outputcapability of your amplifiers. And eachof the Thunder6000 enclosures has arear plexiglas viewing window, for acustom-built enclosure appearance.

TRI-SUB™ENCLOSURE

The T610X3 is a three woofer Tri-Subtrapezoid bass enclosure thatalso conforms to vehicle seatback angles for a perfect fit.The Tri-Sub design fitsvirtually all hatchbacks, and is a perfect fit for thenew Camaros andFirebirds. With total powerhandling of up to 1500watts, the T610X3 takeswhatever you give (andprobably would ask for more if itcould).

WHEEL OF THUNDER

At the IASCA finals, dB Drag Finals, and USAC finals, we brought ourinfamous “Wheel of Thunder” and took some of our customers for aspin. Round and round they went, to get a T-shirt or a hat.

MTXENGINEERS LAUNCH FULL-SCALE BASS INVASION.Every car or truck has wasted s p a c e . You know, those places behindor beneath the seats, where loose change hides and oil change receiptsgather. Those spaces are cryin’ for bass. MTX responds withThunderForm vehicle-specific subwoofer enclosures.

IMAGINE—A MOTHER-LOAD OF BASSIN A SMALL SPACE.MTX engineers measured top-selling vehicles and evaluated their sonicsignatures. Using unique materials and creative manufacturingprocesses we developed enclosures that would deliver high quality sonicperformance, yet fit in the wasted space where you can’t fit anythingelse. ThunderForm vehicle-specific mobile enclosures are designed to fillyour car’s deepest, darkest corners and deliver a mother-load of bass.

STYLE, SUBSTANCE AND ABOVEALL—PERFORMANCE.ThunderForm enclosures are engineered in loaded or amplified modelsto deliver high SPL with very low distortion (you can get them unloadedalso, if you want to “make your own bass”). They’re available in a varietyof colors to match the interior of your particular vehicle and you won’thave to compromise its cosmetic integrity. This is especially nice forthose who lease their vehicles and want to enjoy added bass without theadded hassle of messy installations. The material in the ThunderFormenclosures is a high density polyethylene resin, which is resilientenough to transform into various shapes, yet rigid enough to avoidflexing. It also has enough density to dampen any resonance (Nocabinet “ping” allowed).

All ThunderForm mobile enclosures are manufactured througha process we call rotational molding. It’s technology thatallows you, our customer, to select a textured subwooferenclosure that sounds great, fits perfectly, and is a perfectcolor match to your OEM color scheme. Stay very faraway from anyone who tells you that all grays are alike —they’re not. And, it’s our technological approach thatmakes these enclosures, that sound like a million, not costa million.

NEW AMPLIFIED MODELS: ATOTALLY NEW CONCEPT INMATERIALS, DESIGN ANDMANUFACTURINGOn the Amplified ThunderForm models, we’ve added an on-board, 100-watt, Class-D amplifier. The amp is highly efficient, and has beendesigned specifically for the subwoofer in the enclosure. This means thatyou get deep, low bass, without having to wire in a separate amplifier. And the MTX Smart-Engage Circuitry (patent pending) eliminates theneed to remove your factory head-unit during most installations (now, ifyou don’t know how much time that feature alone will save you, just gosit in your car, and imagine having to tear out the whole dash... and reallyhope you don’t snap any of the clips in there).

MOBILE ENCLOSURES

UNLOADED ENCLOSURESMTX unloaded enclosures are pre-designed so youcan choose your own loudspeakers. You get the samerugged construction as in our Road Thunder pre-loaded enclosures. The choices are almost staggering, from bandpass, to wedges, even for 6” x 9” coaxials.

BANDPASSLOUDSPEAKERS: OPTIMAL

AIR VOLUMESBandpass loudspeaker systems are a logical choicewhen you’re interested in efficiency (requiring lessamplifier power to create more sound). And,because the MTX acoustic engineers havepainstakingly calculated the optimum front and rearchamber air volumes, and the front chamber tuningfrequency, the acoustic response is highly accurate. And the MTX Road Thunder Bandpass boxes have acustom-built box look—no average, square plexiglaswindows for you!

It’s amazing how resilient the human body is. Nosleep, Cold pizza for breakfast. All for the thrill ofthe competition.

Jason Planck is the Director of MTX ThunderForce. He is the proverbialroad warrior, spending almost every weekend at IASCA and dB DragRacing events, supporting our ThunderForce team members. And whenhe’s not at these events, he’s building the next show car for MTX. And, ohyeah, he has a car of his own that’s an IASCA champion. He has one ofthose special characteristics—he can get by with no sleep for weeks at atime. What a guy!
