Executive summary

Purpose - This study contributes to the research on influencer marketing and language

use in advertising by combining the two research areas, which has not been done before.

Research questions - We looked at language use in Instagram influencer ad captions

from two different perspectives. From the perspective of influencers, we wanted to

identify their motives for using Dutch, English and/or French in the captions of their

influencer ads. From the perspective of millennials, we wanted to measure the impact of

caption language (Dutch, English and French) on their attitudes towards the ad,

perceived message credibility, product attitude and purchase intentions.

Methodology - To find an answer on RQ1, three in-depth interviews were conducted

with Instagram macro influencers that are familiar with influencer marketing. To

answer RQ2, RQ3 and RQ4, an online survey was distributed to first- and second-year

economics students at the University of Ghent. The survey contained questions about

two different influencer ads measuring the four above mentioned variables. Three

versions of the survey were made: one with two influencer ads with Dutch captions, one

with influencer ads with English captions and one with French captions.

Findings - The influencers' language use seems to be primarily based on their own

preference and identity. A motive that applies to all three of them is that they choose the

language in which they feel most able to express themselves (RQ1).

The quantitative analysis showed that caption language does have an impact. Significant

differences between the languages were found for perceived message credibility,

purchase intention and especially for product attitude (RQ2). In all cases, the average

scores were higher for Dutch, implying that the use of Dutch in influencer ad captions

has a more positive effect on these variables (RQ3). For two items of product attitude,

however, the significant differences depended on the respondents' perceived match

between the caption language and the advertised brand rather than on the caption

language itself (RQ4).

Recommendation - We advise Dutch-speaking influencers to use Dutch in their

influencer ad captions on Instagram when targeting Dutch-speaking 18 to 24 year olds.

That way, they could have a positive impact on these millennials' product attitude, as

opposed to when using English or French. Influencer agencies, in their turn, can play

their part by engaging influencers that mainly post in Dutch or by instructing other

influencers to do so.

1. Introduction

The ever-growing popularity of social media has become undeniable anno 2019. In the

last decade, social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat have

grown to become the number one communication tool for people all over the world. And

from the very beginning, brands have seized the opportunity to use social media not only

as a way of communicating with, but also as a way of advertising to their (potential)

customers. And with success.

In these last few years, however, advertising on social media has become even more

effective with the emergence of influencer marketing. As opposed to traditional

advertising, where brands promote their products and services themselves, influencer

marketing refers to advertising done by 'influencers', i.e. people with a lot of followers on

social media. Brands increasingly engage and pay such people to write positive messages

about their products or services. And today, Instagram is the main social media platform

via which such messages - so called ‘influencer ads’ with a nice picture and a caption full

of praise - are shared with consumers.

Although, in practice, influencer marketing keeps on gaining in popularity, academic

research on the subject is still rather scarce. And even scarcer when it is looked at from a

linguistic perspective. In contrast to the context of traditional advertising, where (foreign)

language use and its implications has been widely studied, no research has addressed this

topic in the context of influencer marketing. A quick look at the linguistic landscape of

Instagram, however, immediately shows that this certainly is a relevant issue. As the

world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad)

captions on Instagram, but there are still a lot of people, including influencers, who use

other languages as well.

These observations give rise to two important questions: What motives do influencers

have for (not) using a certain language in their ads? And what is the impact of that

language choice on the attitudes and opinions of their followers? It is these questions that

the current paper will provide an answer to.

A detailed outline of all research questions can be found in the next chapter and is

followed by an overview of relevant literature in chapter 3. The research methods and

results of the qualitative and quantitative part of this study can be found in chapters 4 to

7. The conclusions are reported in the 8th chapter, followed by limitations and

suggestions for further research in chapter 9.

2. Research questions

The main research question of this study is as follows: What is the impact of the caption

language of an Instagram influencer ad on the opinions and attitudes of millennials?

This question has been narrowed on three points. Firstly, this study identifies and

compares the impact of three languages only, namely Dutch, English and French. We

chose these languages because these are the ones that Parlez is active in. Secondly,

'millennials' refers in this case to first- and second-year economics students at the

University of Ghent. These students were all between 18 and 24 years old and therefore

part of the main target group of influencer marketing. Lastly, we identified the impact of

caption language on four variables that we believe (can) determine the success of

influencer ads/marketing, i.e. (1) general attitude towards the influencer ad, (2)

perceived message credibility, (2) attitude towards the promoted product and (4)

purchase intention.

The main research question can be divided into three sub-questions:

o Are there significant differences between the three languages in terms of attitude

towards the ad, perceived message credibility, product attitude and purchase

intention? (RQ2)

o If so, which language are these significant differences in favour of? (RQ3)

o If so, does the respondents' perceived match between the advertised brand and

the caption language have an impact on these significant differences? (RQ4)

To find an answer to these questions, we used a quantitative research method in the form

of an online survey.

Additionally, this study also seeks to identify the motives of influencers for using Dutch,

English and/or French in their influencer ad captions on Instagram (RQ1)1. To do so, we

conducted three interviews with macro influencers.

1 This is RQ1 because we conducted the interviews before distributing the survey. The research questions are

numbered in accordance to the order in which they will be answered.

3. Theoretical framework

This paper contributes to the existing research on influencer marketing (3.1) and foreign

language advertising (3.2). The most relevant studies are presented in this chapter.

3.1 Influencer marketing

3.1.1 Concept

An influencer can be defined as "a person that has the ability to influence the behaviour or

opinions of others, for example through their use of social media" (Cambridge Dictionary,

2019). Knowing that marketing essentially refers to encouraging people to buy something

(Cambridge Dictionary, 2019), we can define influencer marketing as the marketing

technique in which influencers are engaged to promote brands, products or services to

their audience. This promotion typically occurs in the form of sponsored content2 on

social media such as Facebook, and more frequently, Instagram.

In the last few years, influencer marketing has grown to become a very popular technique

and an essential investment for many companies. This growing interest stems from the

great benefits that influencer marketing can bring as opposed to traditional marketing.

For instance, a 2016 study came to the conclusion that influencer marketing is able to

yield 11 times more return on investment per year than traditional advertising

(Kirkpatrick, 2016). The main reason for influencer marketing being such an effective

new form of advertising seems to be generally agreed upon. Consumers are, indeed, more

likely to trust and react positively to a message that comes from friends or family than to

one sent out by a company (Woods, 2016, p. 6).

3.1.2 Research

Although influencer marketing is rapidly becoming common practice, academic research

on this new marketing technique is still rather scarce, especially when applied to the

specific context of Instagram. Among the few studies that have been carried out, the

following are the most relevant to this paper.

3.1.2.1 Influencer marketing credibility

Based on previous research about (the impact of) celebrity endorsement in advertising,

Häregard Edvardsson and Boestam (2018) made the following conceptual model of

factors that determine the perception of credibility (Figure 1).

2 Sponsored content refers to pictures, text, messages that take the same form as the publisher's original content (in

this case an Instagram post) and that is meant to favourably influence viewers' perceptions of the sponsor brand

(Sonderman & Tran, 2013).

Page 13: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

8

Fig. 1: The conceptual model of credibility based on previous research about celebrity endorsement (Häregard Edvardsson & Boestam, 2018, p. 12)

The goal of the study was to see to what extent the same factors of credibility would also

apply to influencer marketing. The results showed that influencer marketing is more

credible when influencers have a personal connection with their audience and are seen as

competent, successful and honest (i.e. source credibility). As for the number of brands

being promoted, this could have a negative impact on credibility when the brands are

competitors. Obvious economic profit (i.e. clearly showing that you get paid for the

promotion) could have a negative impact on credibility as well, except when there's a

good brand-influencer fit. Moreover, a good fit between the influencer and the promoted

brand or product in terms of image and values also has a positive effect on credibility,

just as the message of the post being clear and the language use correct. Note that the

latter makes this study one of the very few to discuss the linguistic aspect of influencer

marketing (Häregard Edvardsson & Boestam, 2018, p. 65).

The researchers eventually identified the two factors that have the most important impact

on perceived credibility of influencer marketing, which are source credibility on the one

hand and brand-influencer match on the other hand (Häregard Edvardsson & Boestam,

2018, p. 66).

3.1.2.2 Credibility and purchase intention

Djafarova and Rushworth (2017) are two of several researchers that have linked

perceived influencer (marketing) credibility with purchase intentions. They carried out

in-depth interviews with Instagram users to identify the ability of influencers as opposed

to that of celebrities to influence consumers' purchase intention. For these participants, a

person's number of subscribers appeared to be an indicator of their credibility. However,

the study also showed that influencers and bloggers ('micro-celebrities') have more

impact on purchase behaviour than celebrities, as they are considered to be more

Page 14: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

9

trustworthy and credible, even though they have less subscribers (Djafarova &

Rushworth, 2017, p. 1).

This is in line with the study of Rebelo (2017, p. 51) that came to the conclusion that the

more credible the influencers, the more likely they are to influence the purchase

intentions of consumers. Especially trustworthiness and attractiveness of the influencer

seemed to play an important role in that interaction.

Besides credibility, purchase intention has also been linked to consumers' attitudes

towards promotion done by Instagram influencers. In 2016, a study of Korotina and

Jargalsaikhan revealed that attitudes towards influencer promotions strongly depend on

the type of promotion. More specifically, respondents had the most favourable attitudes

towards discount codes shared by the influencers, followed by advice giving. Product

placement, however, was strongly negatively evaluated, because it was considered to be

too commercial. Eventually, these attitudes were linked with consumers' purchase

intention. It was found that, although product placement was more negatively evaluated,

this type of promotion did have a more positive impact on purchase intention than giving

advice (Korotina & Jargalsaikhan, 2016, p. 1).

3.1.2.3 Disclosure language

Lastly, some research in the context of influencer marketing focuses on disclosure

language and its impact on various factors.

In 2014, for instance, Carr and Hayes concluded that the degree of explicitness of

disclosures in product reviews has an impact on the opinion leader's credibility, and

therefore also on product attitude and purchase intentions. Bloggers were perceived as

less credible when they used disclosure language as opposed to when no disclosure was

used. However, this was only the case when the disclosure was implicit and not when it

was explicit.

Evans, Phua, Lim and Jun (2017) focused on disclosure language as well. They studied the

effect of different types of disclosure ('SP', 'Sponsored' and 'Paid ad') in Instagram

influencer ads on brand attitude and purchase intention. The study showed a significant

difference in brand attitude between the ads without disclosure language and the ads

saying 'Sponsored', in favour of those without disclosure. As for the impact on purchase

intention, no significant differences were found between the three types of disclosure

language.

A look at the existing literature shows that, with the exception of some research on

disclosure language (e.g. Carr & Hayes, 2014; Evans et al., 2017) and the impact of correct

language use (Häregard Edvardsson & Boestam, 2018), the linguistic aspect of influencer

marketing is an untouched subject. This makes the current study, that identifies the

Page 15: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

10

impact of different (foreign) languages in influencer ads on consumers' attitudes, very

relevant.

In the context of traditional advertising, however, (foreign) language use has already been

the subject of numerous studies.

3.2 Language use in advertising

Many researchers have thoroughly studied foreign language use in advertisements and

its effects on a wide variety of variables. The following gives an overview of the most

relevant studies.

3.2.1 Foreign language use in advertising: Motives

English is by far the most frequently used foreign language in advertising. Consequently,

research has mostly dealt with advertisers' reasons for using English instead of the

targeted consumers' local language.

In 2000, for instance, Gerritsen, Korzilius, van Meurs and Gijsbers conducted interviews

with advertising agencies to identify their motives for using English in their commercials

for Dutch consumers. Three key motives were found. Firstly, the financial aspect seemed

to play an important role. Translating English texts to the local language costs a lot of

money that is not always available. Moreover, expensive translations are often considered

to be unnecessary, because English is believed to be understood by everyone. Secondly,

advertisers believed that the use of English is beneficial to the image of the advertised

products. As the world's lingua franca, English would make the products seem more

international and cool. A last motive for using English in ads was the lack of a good Dutch

equivalent. According to the advertisers, specific terms or products (e.g. 'airbag') are

sometimes difficult or even impossible to translate into another language (Gerritsen et al.,

2000, p. 20).

Ten years later, this study was replicated by Gerritsen et al. (2010) with advertising

agencies that use English in their ads to consumers whose native language is not English,

but, for instance, French or Spanish. Their motives for using English were fully in line with

those identified in the previous study (Gerritsen et al., 2000). Advertisers believed that

English is understood by anyone and that it has a positive impact on product image. They

also use English because, in some cases, there is no suitable equivalent in the local

language (Gerritsen et al., 2010, p. 352).

3.2.2 Foreign language use in advertising vs. consumers' attitudes

3.2.2.1 Attitudes towards the ad

Page 16: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

11

In 2000, Gerritsen et al. (cf. 3.2.1) identified Dutch consumers' attitudes towards the use

of English in commercials. Respondents were shown TV commercials that were partly or

entirely in English and had to indicate how they felt about them. The study showed that

all subjects had a rather negative attitude towards the use of English. Afterwards, the

respondents' attitudes were linked with their age. This led to the conclusion that the

younger generation (15-18 years) had a more positive attitude towards the English used

than the older generation (50-57 years).

Parallel to this study, Gerritsen (2004) identified Dutch, German, Spanish and Italian

consumers' attitudes towards product advertisements that were entirely in English. She

came to the same conclusion, namely that all respondents had a rather negative attitude

towards the use of English. In this case, no comparison between the respondents'

attitudes was made based on age.

Whereas the above studies directly measured consumers' attitudes towards (the use of)

English (in) commercials, Hornikx, van Meurs and Starren (2007) used a different, more

indirect approach. They identified consumers' associations that were evoked by the use of

French, German and Spanish in Dutch advertisements. Subsequently, these associations

were linked to the consumers' overall attitude towards the ad itself, i.e. with a slogan in

one of the three languages. The study showed that, for the French language, positive

associations were more frequent than neutral and negative ones. As for the link with the

respondents' general appreciation of the ad, it appeared that they preferred the ad for

which they had the most positive and the least negative associations with the used foreign

language (Hornikx et al., 2007, p. 204).

3.2.2.2 Attitudes towards the advertised product

In 2010, Gerritsen et al. (cf. 3.2.1) studied the impact of the use of English or a local

language in advertisements on product image. Respondents from Belgium, the

Netherlands, Germany, France and Spain were shown different product ads that were

either in English or in the local language. Based on these ads, they had to indicate to what

extent they believed that the advertised product was trendy, innovative and old

fashioned. The study showed that there was no significant difference in product image

between the English ads and the ads in the local language. Thus, these researchers found

that the use of English does not have any an impact on product image. Note that this

finding contradicts the above mentioned motives for using English in ads as identified by

Gerritsen et al. (2000; 2010).

3.2.3 Foreign language comprehension vs. consumers' attitudes

Besides the impact of foreign language use in advertising on consumers' attitudes,

researchers have also tried to identify the impact of consumers' own foreign language

comprehension.

Page 17: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

12

In 2010, for instance, Hornikx, van Meurs and de Boer studied the impact of the difficulty

level of English on Dutch consumers' preference for English commercials or the Dutch

equivalents. Participants were shown several commercials of which the slogans

represented a different (pretested) difficulty level of English. Afterwards, they also got to

see the Dutch equivalent. The study showed that, when the English was difficult to

understand, there was no preference for one of the two languages. However, when the

English was easy to understand, respondents preferred the English commercials rather

than the Dutch ones. (Hornikx et al., 2010, p. 169).

A similar study was conducted by Hornikx and Starren in 2006. They also identified the

relationship between language comprehension and appreciation of foreign language

advertisements. However, in this case, ads with Dutch slogans were compared to ads with

French slogans instead of English ones. Respondents were shown commercials with

pretested slogans that were either relatively easy or rather difficult to understand. After

measuring their comprehension of the French text, respondents were asked to indicate

their preference for the ads with the French slogans or the Dutch equivalents. Parallel to

the 2010 study of Hornikx and van Meurs, this study revealed that a small majority of the

respondents preferred the French version to the Dutch version when the French slogans

were easy to understand. However, when the French was difficult, most participants

preferred the Dutch advertisement.

Thus, both studies demonstrated that the respondents' comprehension of the foreign

language (English and French) does have an impact on their preference for and attitudes

towards foreign or local language advertisements.

3.2.4 Congruence between advertising language and product vs.

consumers' attitudes

A last important study in the context of advertising language is that of Hornikx, van Meurs

and Hof (2013). They identified the impact of product - language (in)congruence on the

effectiveness of foreign language ads in terms of perceived product quality, product

attitude and purchase intentions. Based on Dutch students' perceptions of

(in)congruence, several ads were selected and their slogans translated into French,

German and Spanish. The language of the slogans was either congruent (e.g. wine -

French) or incongruent (e.g. beer - French) with the advertised product in question. The

study revealed that products that are congruent with the advertising language (and the

country-of-origin of that language) are more positively evaluated than when there is an

incongruence (Hornikx et al., 2013, 159). Thus, using a foreign language in

advertisements is more effective when this language matches the promoted product.

4. Qualitative approach: Methodology

The qualitative part of this study consists of in-depth interviews with three influencers

that often collaborate with Parlez to promote products or brands. The main goal was to

identify the influencers' motives for using a certain language in their (influencer ad)

captions on Instagram.

4.1 Interview guide

In a first phase, an interview guide was made to use as a red thread throughout the

interviews. All conversations started with some general questions about the influencers'

use of Instagram and their thoughts on being an influencer and influencer marketing.

Then followed more detailed questions about their language use. Following the funnel

technique, the interview guide moved towards the main question: What factors underlie

the choice of these influencers to use a certain language in their captions?

The complete interview guide can be found in Appendix 1. All questions are based on own

insights.

4.2 Participant recruitment

After drawing up the interview guide, we had to find three suitable influencers that would

be willing to participate in this study.

4.2.1 Selection criteria

The selection of suitable interviewees was based on three aspects. Firstly, the influencers'

feed and identity played a role. As Parlez is mainly active in the fast-moving consumer

goods (food and beverages) and beauty sector, the interviewees preferably had to be

influencers promoting brands or products within those sectors. Secondly, the influencers

ideally were macro influencers, i.e. with 10 000 or more followers on Instagram. Since

these influencers have a very broad audience, it could be thought that they are more

involved in what and how (and maybe in what language) they post on their social media.

Lastly, the influencers' language use was also an important - if not the most important -

factor in the selection of interviewees. All three influencers preferably used one of the

three or a combination of the languages that are included in this study, i.e. Dutch, English

and French.

Page 19: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

14

4.2.2 Contacted influencers

The three influencers that were judged the most suitable to interview were Natalie

Vanheers (@latanie), Eline Vandingenen (@eline.vandingenen) and France Dejonckheere

(@madebyf). They are macro influencers that promote fast-moving consumer goods

and/or beauty products and have a different language use pattern on Instagram. With the

exception of an occasional English quote or term, Natalie always posts in Dutch, her native

language. The same goes for Eline. France is French-speaking and always writes her

captions in both French and English.

The three influencers were contacted through e-mail and asked if they would be

interested in participating in a study about language use on Instagram. They were all very

excited about the idea.

4.3 Interviews

As I believe that interviewees reveal more of their true opinions and feelings during a

personal interview than through Skype or telephone, all interviews were real-life

conversations that took place somewhere the influencers chose themselves. On the 11th

of May, we went to Hasselt to interview Natalie. Eline was interviewed on the 14th of May

in Turnhout and the interview with France took place on the 27th of May in Brussels.

Because all three influencers have fixed jobs and therefore not much time do give an

interview, the conversations were purposely kept as short as possible. They all took about

30 minutes. Each time, it was more of an fun conversation between two people who are

inspired by the Instagram world than a formal interview between a researcher and an

expert.

Page 20: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

15

5. Qualitative approach: Results

The three conversations were analyzed and compared to identify the influencers' motives

for using a certain language for their captions and to see whether their motives differ

from each other. The following chapter first introduces the influencers (5.1) and then

discusses the main results (5.2). The transcriptions of the interviews can be found in

Appendix 2.

5.1 About the influencers

Natalie has been blogging for eleven years and has been on Instagram since the beginning

in 2012. At first, she used it to share personal content with friends and family, but now,

she also shares reviews about beauty products from brands that sponsor her. Natalie

doesn't earn money with Instagram and doesn't intend to. Getting the chance to test out

new products is enough for her.

The same goes for Eline in that she has been blogging and posting on Instagram from the

very beginning. What started as a way of sharing pictures with friends soon became a

source of inspiration and a way of expressing her creativity. She describes it as a "fun

hobby that got a bit out of hand" and for which she gets paid from time to time.

France has been blogging and using Instagram since 2014. At first, she posted about

themes that "everyone likes" such as beauty and fashion, whereas now, she also talks

about more complex subjects such as gender equality. In 2015, France quit her job as a

lawyer and decided to become a full time (paid) influencer.

Strikingly, all three influencers almost immediately pointed out that they do not like the

word 'influencer' but prefer to be called 'blogger'. Natalie and Eline both indicated that

the word and the concept of 'influencer' have a rather negative connotation. France also

addressed this rather negative attitude towards influencers and explained that, in her

experience, people tend to think you are dishonest and fake when they know you get paid

for a post.

5.2 About the influencers' language use

Language use seems to be something that the influencers themselves consciously and

continuously reflect on, implying that this study addresses a realistic issue.

5.2.1 Natalie

Page 21: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

16

Natalie is a Dutch native speaker who used both Dutch and English in the past, but now

only writes in Dutch. However, when a word or phrase sounds better in English, she uses

that language. Her choice for Dutch does not seem to depend on the brand or product that

she promotes, but it does stem from some other factors:

She is more able to express herself properly in Dutch than in English. Although

she says to have a good knowledge of English, she believes that she would not be

able to always say exactly what she wants using English.

She speaks Dutch herself, so why would she then write in English? Moreover, the

majority of her followers are also Dutch-speaking, which makes it an even

more obvious choice to write in that language.

She believes that writing in Dutch makes her and her content more authentic,

real and credible. She calls it "fake" and "ridiculous" when Dutch-speaking

bloggers talk and write in English.

She doesn't use both languages anymore because that takes her too much time

and effort and she can't combine that with her full time job.

Natalie doesn't believe that caption language, and even the caption in general, could have

an impact on people's attitudes. In her opinion, it is more the picture and the content itself

that does. This seems to be in contradiction with the fact that she writes in Dutch to be

more authentic, real and credible, indicating that she struggles with the issue of language

use herself.

If it ever turned out that the caption language does have an impact, she would still not

move away from Dutch. Because the pleasure she takes in creating a nice feed and giving

advice to people will always be superior to the commercial aspect of her influencer ads.

5.2.2 Eline

Eline is a Dutch native speaker who used to post in English to go with the flow, but later

decided to switch to Dutch. However, when something sounds better in English than in

Dutch, she still uses English sometimes. Eline says that her language use does not depend

on the promoted product or brand, but that it is much more a question of what she wants

to say exactly and how she feels at that moment. Her reasons for always using a Dutch

basis for the captions are the following:

She feels like she is more able to express herself in Dutch, although she says that

her knowledge of English is very good as well.

Speaking Dutch is an important part of her personality, it reflects who she is.

By writing in Dutch, she wants to be as approachable as possible for all her

(Dutch-speaking) followers.

She doesn't strive for a large number of followers (if so, she would use English),

but wants to create real and personal connections with her local (Dutch-

speaking) followers.

Page 22: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

17

The fact that Eline already asked her own followers which language they preferred for

Instagram posts proves that language use is an important issue for her. Her online poll

showed that the majority of her followers preferred Dutch over English.

Eline doesn't believe that the caption language could have an impact on attitudes or

credibility. However, she does believe that the way that a caption is formulated and who

you are as a person can be of great influence. In her opinion, you seem less honest and

reliable when it is too obvious that you were paid to promote something. If caption

language did have an impact, she would still continue to use Dutch, as this language is an

essential part of her identity.

5.2.3 France

France is a French-speaking influencer who used to write only in English, but later

decided to also write in French in order to reach more French-speaking followers, who

are often very attached to their language. She currently writes all captions in English and

then translates them into French. However, when a certain phrase doesn't sound good in

English or French, she sometimes leaves out this version of the caption. As she (almost)

always uses both languages, the question whether her language choice depends on the

promoted product or brand is not applicable to her. However, the choice of using both

languages does have some specific reasons:

Although she is a French native speaker, France is very much emotionally

attached to the English language.

She believes that she can express herself in English in a better and more catchy

way than in French.

She has followers from Belgium and France, but also from America and England

and finds it important to communicate in a language that they all understand,

and, for the French-speaking in particular, are willing to understand.

Her blog is only in French because it takes her too much time and effort to translate long

texts in both languages. Moreover, she noticed that a blog is much more local than an

Instagram account, meaning that it is mostly read by her French-speaking followers.

However, as she wants to reach more people, she is now also considering English for her

blog.

France truly believes that the caption language does have an impact on opinions and

attitudes of followers, because another language automatically implies another way of

communicating and formulating. However, she would not consider leaving out one of the

two languages if it turned out that one has more impact than the other, as she would then

lose an important part of her followers.

Page 23: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

5.3 Conclusion

The influencers' motives for using Dutch, English and/or French in their captions seem to

be partially in line with traditional advertisers' motives for using English in

advertisements, as identified by Gerritsen et al. (2000; 2010). The linguistic aspect applies

to all three influencers in that they all write in the language in which they can express

themselves in the best way, but when a word or sentence sounds better in another

language (especially English), they use that one. The financial aspect is also present but

rather in terms of time and effort than money. Both Natalie and France (with regard to

her blog only) indicated to not use both languages because that would take them to much

time and effort to make a good translation. Product image, lastly, does not seem to be a

motive as all three indicated that their language does not depend on the promoted

product or brand.

As for their opinions on the possible impact of language on attitudes, opinions, credibility

etc., the influencers are divided into two groups. Natalie and Eline don't believe that

caption language has an impact, whereas France is convinced that it does. The fact that

there is a difference in the influencers' opinions confirms that the main research question

of this study addresses a realistic issue. The results of the survey (cf. chapter 7) will show

whether the opinion of Natalie and Eline on the one hand or that of France on the other

hand is more in line with reality.

6. Quantitative approach: Methodology

The quantitative part of this study consists of an online survey with questions about two

influencer ads that was distributed to students at the University of Ghent. The

quantitative methodology is largely based on previous research about the impact of

advertising language (cf. Chapter 3).

6.1 Survey

The survey consists of four large parts and eighteen questions in total. Apart from the

preliminary questions and the demographic variables, the questions of the survey are

entirely based on volume 9 of the Marketing Scales Handbook (Bruner II, G.C., 2017).

To be able to identify the impact of the caption language, three versions of the survey

were made and distributed to three respondent groups. Each version contained two

influencer ads with either Dutch, English or French captions, meaning that each

respondent group provided answers for one language only.

6.1.1 Preliminary questions

The first part of the survey consisted of four preliminary questions that introduced the

subject. These questions were included for us to get a first view of the respondent groups.

Respondents were asked if they had an account on Instagram and if so, how often they

used that account (daily, weekly, monthly or less). They also had to indicate how often

they read the captions that accompany pictures on Instagram, on a 5 point scale from

'never' to 'always'. Lastly, we asked them to self-asses their knowledge of Dutch, English

or French, dependent on the version of the survey they were ought to fill out, on a 7 point

scale from 'very bad' to 'very good'.

6.1.2 Influencer ads

6.1.2.1 Selection and preparation

The second and third part of the survey were composed of twelve questions about two

different influencer ads on Instagram. These ads were partly randomly chosen in that it

didn’t really matter which brand or product was promoted exactly. However, one post

had to promote a product of the food and beverage sector and one had to be about a

beauty product, as those two sectors are the main sectors that Parlez is active in. We

chose to include two different ads because it would be interesting to see whether the

impact of caption language on millennials' attitudes depended on the (type of) product or

brand.

Page 25: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

20

The first post was about Quaker oatmeal and the second one about beauty products from

Klorane, two brands that Parlez works with regularly. The captions of both posts were

originally written in Dutch. Thus, in order to be able to compare the impact of the three

languages, the captions had to be translated into English and French. To make sure that all

respondents would comprehend the text, we deliberately made the translations as easy as

possible. Eventually, we had three versions of each post, i.e. one for each language.

6.1.2.2 Questions

The post about Quaker oatmeal was shown to the respondents first, followed by six

questions concerning that post.

The first question was about the perceived match between the promoted brand and the

language of the caption. Respondents had to indicate how well they thought the caption

language fitted the brand on a 7 point scale from 'totally doesn't fit' to 'fits very well'. This

question was included because previous research (Hornikx et al., 2013) revealed that the

extent to which the advertising language fits the advertised product has an impact on

certain attitudes and behaviours. It would be interesting to see whether the same goes for

the perceived match between advertising language and advertised brand instead of

product and for influencer ads instead of traditional advertisements.

Then followed five questions that measured each of the four variables3 that are

investigated in this study, i.e. general attitude towards the influencer ad, perceived

message credibility (= credibility of the caption), attitude towards the promoted product

and purchase intention.

First, respondents had to give their opinion - on a 3 point scale with 1 = disagree, 2 =

neutral and 3 = agree - on five statements about the influencer ad (e.g. "This influencer ad

is interesting"). To measure perceived message credibility and product attitude, a 7 point

semantic differential scale was used. Respondents were given five pairs of opposite

adjectives for message credibility (e.g. untrustworthy - trustworthy) and six pairs for

product attitude (e.g. worthless - worth having). They were asked to indicate the adjective

which was, in their opinion, most applicable to the caption and the product promoted.

Lastly, two types of questions were asked to measure the respondents' purchase

intentions. First, they had to indicate - on a 7 point scale with 1 = very improbable and 7 =

very probable - how (im)probable it was that they would buy the promoted product.

Subsequently, they were asked to give their opinion on three statements concerning their

purchase intention, on a 7 point scale with 1 = totally don't agree and 7 = totally agree.

After the Quaker influencer ad, respondents were shown the post about the Klorane

beauty products and instructed to answer the same six questions. With the second ad,

3 From now on, we will refer to these four variables with the term 'clusters'. All questions of the survey that

measure these clusters are called 'items' (= statements, questions, scale items...)

Page 26: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

21

questions were placed in a slightly different order to avoid too obvious repetition that

could possibly lead to a distortion of the results.

6.1.3 Demographic variables

The fourth and last part of the survey consisted of two questions on demographics.

Respondents were asked to indicate their sex and age.

The three versions of the survey, i.e. with the Dutch, English and French captions, were set

out in Qualtrics, resulting in three shareable links that could be distributed. The surveys

can be found in Appendix 3.

6.2 Respondent recruitment and data collection

The survey was distributed via the Minerva platform of the University of Ghent to first-

and second-year economics students (Economics, Business Economics and Business

Engineering).

This respondent group was chosen for four different reasons. First of all, they were very

fast and easily approachable. We asked some professors at the faculty of economy to

distribute the survey to their students, which led to the desired number of responses in a

relatively short period of time. Secondly, regarding the age of the group, these

respondents are part of the main target group of influencer marketing that is millennials

between 18 and 24 years. Furthermore, distributing the survey to all economics students

of approximately the same age made sure we had a more or less homogenous group of

respondents, which could be seen as beneficial to the results of the study. Lastly, the

students’ language skills were also an important factor. In order for the respondents to be

able to fill out the survey questions, it was important that they would understand what

was written in the captions, independent of which version they would get. As for the

chosen respondents, the large majority of them were Dutch-speaking and they all had a

B1 or B2 level knowledge of English and French.

At the beginning of several lectures, students were divided by their professors into three

approximately equal groups that were instructed to fill out one of the three versions of

the survey. In order for the results to be sufficiently representative, the goal was to have

at least 50 and a more or less equal number of respondents for each version of the survey.

The three surveys were online from the 13th till the 22nd of May. Afterwards, they were

exported to SPSS in order to analyze the collected data.

Page 27: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

22

7. Quantitative approach: Results

235 students filled out the three versions of the survey. However, due to technical

problems with the distributed link, 23 incomplete and therefore unusable responses had

to be removed from the data set.

Among the remaining 212 respondents, 37 indicated that they did not have an account on

Instagram. Identifying these people's attitudes would not contribute to answering the

research questions of this study, as they are not a part of the target audience of influencer

marketing. Therefore, those respondents were informed that they did not have to fill out

the survey any further and their responses were also removed from the data set.

Eventually, the complete data set consisted of 175 responses that could be analyzed: 57

respondents for the Dutch version of the survey, 69 respondents for the English version

and 49 for the survey with the French captions. The following describes the results of the

conducted analyses in SPSS per section of the survey.

7.1. Demographic variables

7.1.1 Gender

Among the 175 respondents were 95 men, 78 women and 2 people who identified

themselves as X. The gender distribution for each version of the survey was as follows (in

percent):

Gender: Dutch Gender: English Gender: French

(N=57) (N=69) (N=49)

Fig. 2: Gender distribution per language (in percent)

Page 28: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

23

The pie charts show that the three respondent groups were very similar. Each version had

a more or less equal gender ratio with a small majority of male respondents.

7.1.2 Age

The survey was distributed to first- and second-year economics students. Among the 175

respondents, 1 respondent was 18 years old and no respondents were younger. A

majority of 85 respondents were 19 years old, followed by 69 students that indicated to

be 20 years old. 12 people were 21 years old and 8 were older. The below bar chart shows

the age distribution for each version of the survey (in absolute frequencies):

Fig. 3: Age distribution per language (in absolute frequencies)

7.2 Preliminary questions4

By way of introduction, people were asked to indicate how often they use their Instagram

account (7.2.1), how often they read the captions accompanying an Instagram post (7.2.2)

and how well they assess their language knowledge, dependent on the version of the

survey they had to fill out (7.2.3).

7.2.1 Instagram account usage frequency

The overall average score (i.e. with N = 175) on this question was 1,12 on a 4 point

scale with 1 = daily and 2 = weekly. The number of respondents who use their Instagram

account less than daily was for each survey very low. This implies that most of these

millennials are very likely to come across influencer marketing, which makes them an

interesting sample to study.

7.2.2 Caption reading frequency

The overall average score (i.e. with N = 175) on this question was 3,68 on a 5 point

scale with 3 = sometimes en 4 = often. The number of respondents who indicated to

never or only rarely read the captions was for each survey rather low. This implies that, in

general, captions are indeed read by these millennials, which confirms the relevance of

our research question.

7.2.3 Self-assessed language knowledge

The average score of the respondents of the Dutch version (N = 57) was 6,44 on a 7

point scale (6 = good and 7 = very good). The respondents of the English version (N=69)

gave an average score of 5,43 (5 = rather good and 6 = good). The average score on this

question given by the respondents of the French version (N = 49) was 4,27 (4 = average

and 5 = rather good).

The respondents' self-assessed language knowledge is highest for the Dutch version5 of

the survey and lowest for the survey with the French captions. All average scores lie

between 'average' and 'very good'. This implies that the respondents were able to

understand what was written in the captions, especially considering the fact that the texts

were rather easy.

7.3 Influencer ads

This chapter first describes the results for the question about the respondents' perceived

match between caption language and brand (7.3.1). In paragraph 7.3.2, we go through the

average scores (per language) on each of the four clusters. Paragraph 7.3.3 discusses the

found significant differences between the languages and in paragraph 7.3.4, these

differences are linked to the results presented in 7.3.1 (perceived match).

7.3.1 Perceived match between caption language and promoted brand

For both influencer ads, respondents were asked to indicate to what extent they believed

that the caption language fitted the promoted brand. Figure 3 shows the average scores

per brand and per language.

5 This is in line with our expectations, as the courses during which the surveys were distributed are almost

exclusively attended by Dutch-speaking students.

Page 30: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

25

Fig. 4: Average scores for perceived match between the caption language and the promoted brand

The graph shows that, for all three languages, the average scores lie between 4 =

neutral and 5 = fits rather well. Although the differences between the languages are

always rather small, the highest average scores were given by the students who were

shown the ads with the Dutch captions. The lowest scores were found for the French

version. Table 2 shows that this difference between Dutch and French is even statistically

significant for the Quaker ad (Sig. < 0.05). Thus, respondents seem to believe that French

is a less good fit with the brand Quaker than Dutch.

Table 1: Output of the multiple comparisons analysis for perceived match between caption language and

brand.

7.3.2 Average scores per cluster

For each of the four clusters, we performed a reliability test in SPSS to determine whether

the scores on the specific items were similar enough to combine into a single average

score for each cluster. As Cronbach's α was for all scales 0.73 or higher, we were able to

do so.

Thus, eventually, we had for each language one overall mean for attitude towards the ad,

one for message credibility, one for product attitude and one for purchase intention, for

both influencer ads. The below graphs show these average scores per cluster and per

language.

7.3.2.1 Attitude towards the ad

To identify the respondents' general attitude towards the ads, they were asked to give

their opinion on five statements. A 3 point scale was used, with 1 = disagree, 2 = neutral

and 3 = agree. As the statements were all positively formulated (e.g. "I like this ad"; "This

ad is interesting"...), we can assume that the higher the average score, the more positive

the respondents' attitude towards the ad is.

Fig. 5: Average scores for attitude towards the ad (cluster)

The chart shows that all respondents, regardless of which version they were distributed,

had a similar, more or less neutral attitude towards both ads. The differences between the

languages are rather small, which is already an indication that the respondents' attitude

towards the ad doesn't depend much on the caption language.

Note that the respondents could also indicate 'no opinion' here. These answers were not

included in the calculation of the average scores. However, this did not have an impact on

the results, as the number of 'no opinion' answers was always very low.

The results for the English version contradict those of two studies of Gerritsen et al.

(2000; 2004) concluding that non-native English speakers have a rather negative attitude

towards the use of English in advertisements. Our analysis showed that the respondents'

neutral and very similar to those of the respondents' of the Dutch and French version.

7.3.2.2 Message credibility

Message credibility was measured with five pairs of opposite adjectives on a 7 point

semantic differential scale with the positive adjectives on the right side and the negative

ones on the left. The higher the average score, the more the respondents tended to the

positive adjective and vice versa. In the below graph, 4 represents 'neutral'.

Fig. 6: Average scores for perceived message credibility (cluster)

On the basis of this chart, we can state that the perceived message credibility of both

influencer ads is more or less equal for all respondents, regardless of the caption

language. In all cases, the average scores vary around the neutral score of 4. In other

words, no major differences between the languages could be identified for message

credibility.

7.3.2.3 Product attitude

To measure product attitude, respondents were given six pairs of opposite adjectives on a

7 point semantic differential scale with the positive adjectives on the right side and 4 =

neutral. The higher the average score, the more positive the respondents' attitude

towards the promoted product.

towards the products in both influencer ads. In this case too, the languages don't seem to

differ widely in terms of average scores.

7.3.2.4 Purchase intention

The respondents' purchase intention was identified on the basis of two separate

questions. First, they were asked to indicate how (im)probable it was that they would buy

the product promoted in the ad. They gave their opinion on a 7 point scale with 1 = very

improbable, 4 = neutral and 7 = very probable.

Figure 8 shows that it is rather improbable that the respondents would purchase the

promoted products, as all average scores are rather low. In this case, the differences

between the languages seem to be slightly bigger than for the other clusters. Especially

the average score for the Dutch Quaker ad is noticeably higher than the scores for the

English and French Quaker ads.

Secondly, respondents had to give their opinion on three statements. A 7 point scale was

used with 1 = totally disagree, 4 = neutral and 7 = totally agree. As all statements were

positively formulated (e.g. "I will consider buying this product"), we can assume that a

higher average score implies a higher purchase intention.

Fig. 9: Average scores for the second question about purchase intention

Similar to Figure 8, the above chart also shows that it is rather improbable for these

respondents to buy the promoted products. In this case, however, the differences between

the languages seem to be smaller than for the first question about purchase intention.

This is rather contradictory, as both questions measure the same variable.

Similar to the question about attitude towards the ad (cf. 7.3.2.1), respondents could

indicate 'no opinion' here as well. These answers were not included in the calculation of

the average scores. However, this did not have an impact on the results, as the number of

'no opinion' answers was always very low.

It also has to be noted that, in the Dutch version of the survey, a minor error was found in

the first statement about the Klorane ad. It should have said "The next time I need beauty

products, I would consider buying these products". Instead of "beauty products",

however, the statement said "cornflakes/granola". About twenty students had been

confronted with this error before it was adjusted, but no evidence was found that this

inconvenience has had an impact on the results.

7.3.2.5 Conclusion

The analyses showed that, for each of the four clusters, the differences between the three

caption languages seem to be mostly negligible. In the next chapter (7.3.3), we discuss

whether or not these differences are statistically negligible as well.

Furthermore, the average scores were for each cluster, language and brand rather low.

This observation can be linked to the findings of the qualitative part of this study (cf.

Chapter 5). All three interviewees believed that the word and the concept of 'influencer

(marketing)' has a rather negative connotation. One interviewee explained that, in her

experience, people often think you are dishonest when they know you get paid to

promote something. If these influencers are right and influencer marketing does evoke

rather negative attitudes, then maybe this can explain why all average scores are on the

low side. Another, more obvious explanation for the low scores, especially on product

attitude and purchase intention, would be that the respondents simply don't like the

advertised products or brands.

7.3.3 Significant differences between languages

In the next phase, we investigated whether or not there were significant differences

between the three caption languages. First, we compared the overall average scores on

the clusters (7.3.3.1) and then we also performed several tests to find possible significant

differences for specific items (7.3.3.2).

7.3.3.1 Clusters

For the two brands separately, no significant differences between the three languages

could be identified in terms of overall attitude towards the ad, message credibility,

product attitude or purchase intention.

However, we also analyzed the data for the two brands together. For each language, we

combined the average scores for the Quaker ad and the ad about Klorane to one score for

each cluster that included both ads. When analyzing these scores, we did find a significant

difference between the languages for product attitude6.

The analysis showed that, for this cluster, the Dutch and the English version significantly

differ from each other (Sig. < 0.05). The same goes for the Dutch and the French version

of the survey. In both cases, the respondents who filled out the survey with the Dutch

captions gave higher average scores on this particular cluster (see Table 2). This implies

that, regardless of the (type of) product, these people have a more positive product

attitude than those who were shown the English or French captions.

6 c.f. Appendix 5 for the results of the one way Anova significance test in SPSS.

Page 36: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

31

Table 2: Output of the multiple comparisons analysis for the cluster product attitude (Quaker + Klorane)

Thus, apparently, the caption language does make a difference in terms of product

attitude. These results contradict the study of Gerritsen et al. (2010) in which no

significant difference between English ads and ads in the local language (including Dutch)

was found in terms of product image.

7.3.3.2 Items

We also searched for significant differences within the clusters, i.e. at the level of the

items. These analyses revealed significant differences between the three languages for six

items in total. Due to a lack of time, however, we were only able to analyze the data for the

two brands separately. It has to be noted that this brings with it the possibility that the

found significant differences do not (only) depend on the caption language, but (also) on

the (type of) product or brand. An analysis of the two ads together, by contrast, would

eliminate that chance.

7.3.3.2.1 Quaker

The analysis of the Quaker influencer ad revealed four significant differences between the

three languages. Three of them concern the respondents' product attitude and one

concerns their purchase intention.

The first item where a significant difference was found, is the item low quality - high

quality of the 7 point semantic differential for product attitude. The analysis showed that,

for this item, the Dutch and the English version of the survey significantly differ from

each other (Sig. < 0.05). The same goes for the Dutch and the French version. In both

cases, the respondents who filled out the Dutch version gave a higher average score and

therefore tended more to the positive adjective (high quality) than the respondents who

filled out the English or French version (see Table 3).

Page 37: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

32

Table 3: Output of the multiple comparisons analysis for the item low quality - high quality (Quaker)

The second item that showed a significant difference, is the item worthless - worth

having for product attitude. For this item, the Dutch and English version of the survey

significantly differ from each other (Sig. < 0.05). The respondents that were shown the

ads with the Dutch captions gave a higher average score (see Table 4), which means that

they perceived the Quaker product more as worth having than the respondents of the

English version did.

Table 4: Output of the multiple comparisons analysis for the item worthless - worth having (Quaker)

The item annoying - pleasing of product attitude is the third item where a significant

difference was found, namely between the average scores of the Dutch and English

version of the survey (Sig. < 0.05). Again, the respondents who were shown the Dutch

captions gave a higher average score and therefore evaluate the Quaker product as more

pleasing than the respondents who were shown the English captions (see Table 5).

Table 5: Output of the multiple comparisons analysis for the item annoying - pleasing (Quaker)

Page 38: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

33

The fourth significant difference between the languages was found for the question about

the (im)probability of the respondents buying the promoted Quaker product. For

this item, the surveys with the Dutch and the English captions significantly differ from

each other (Sig. < 0.05), as well as the Dutch and the French version. In both cases, the

respondents of the Dutch version gave a higher average score (see Table 6), indicating

that, for them, it would be more probable to buy the product than for respondents of the

English or French version.

Table 6: Output of the multiple comparisons analysis for the question about (im)probability of buying the

promoted product (Quaker)

The significant differences between the languages found for this item also apply when

both brands are analyzed together7 (Sig. < 0.05). Both times, the average score is

higher for the survey with the Dutch captions (see Table 7). This implies that, regardless

of the (type of) product or brand, respondents who were shown the Dutch ads felt more

likely to buy the promoted products.

Table 7: Output of the multiple comparisons analysis for the question about (im)probability of buying the

promoted product (Quaker + Klorane)

7.3.3.2.2 Klorane

The analysis of the Klorane influencer ad revealed two significant differences between the

caption languages. One of them concerns the respondents' perceived message credibility

and one concerns their product attitude.

7 This is the only item for which an analysis for the two brands together was carried out as well. The results

of the one way Anova significance test in SPSS can be found in Appendix 6.

Page 39: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

34

The first item where a significant difference was found, is the item unreliable - reliable

of the 7 point semantic differential for message credibility. The analysis revealed a

significant difference between the Dutch and the English version of the survey (Sig. <

0.05). This time, too, the respondents who were shown the ad with the Dutch captions

gave a higher average score (see Table 8). This implies that those people perceive the

message of the influencer ad (i.e. the caption) as more reliable than those who got the

English version.

Table 8: Output of the multiple comparisons analysis for item unreliable - reliable (Klorane)

Parallel to the results for the Quaker ad, the item low quality - high quality of product

attitude was also for the Klorane ad an item with a significant difference. The analysis

showed that the Dutch and the English version of the survey significantly differ from

each other (Sig. < 0.05). As in all other cases, the average score is again higher for the

Dutch version (see Table 9), implying that those respondents perceived the Klorane

product as of higher quality than the respondents who were distributed the English

survey.

Table 9: Output of the multiple comparisons analysis for item low quality - high quality (Klorane)

7.3.3.3 Conclusion

The analyses revealed some significant differences between the caption languages, which

confirms the intuition of one of the interviewed influencers, France, that language use

does have an impact on attitudes and opinions (cf. Chapter 5).

Product attitude was the only cluster for which significant differences were found (Dutch

vs. English and Dutch vs. French). These differences are based on the analysis of the two

ads together, implying that they do not depend on the product or brand. As for the items,

Page 40: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

35

six significant differences were found for items of message credibility (1), product

attitude (4) and purchase intention (1). However, the items have only been analyzed for

the two brands separately, which means that the found significant differences may (also)

depend on the brand or product instead of (only) the caption language.

Strikingly, in all cases where a significant difference was found, the Dutch and English

versions differed from each other (sometimes in combination with a difference between

Dutch and French), whereas no difference between English and French could be

identified. Moreover, for the clusters as well as for the items, all identified significant

differences were in favour of the Dutch version of the survey.

This finding contradicts those of the study of Hornikx and Starren (2006 French) and that

of Hornikx et al. (2010 English) revealing that the foreign version of an ad is more

positively evaluated than a Dutch equivalent when the foreign language text is easy to

understand. The French and English captions used in this study can be considered easy to

understand, especially when knowing that all respondents have a B1 or B2 level

knowledge of those languages. However, in all cases where the differences between the

languages were significant, the ads with the Dutch captions were more positively

evaluated.

7.3.4 Impact of perceived match between caption language and brand

In the last phase of our study, we identified whether the respondent's perceived match

between the caption language and the promoted brand had an impact on the found

significant differences. To do so, we performed a covariate analysis in SPSS that would

show us whether the significant differences between the languages kept on existing when

adding the perceived match as a third factor. If so, the perceived match would not have an

impact on the results. If, however, the significant differences disappeared, this would

indicate that the differences in answers did not depend on the caption language, but

rather on the perceived match.

The analysis showed that, in most cases, the perceived match between the caption

language and the promoted brand does not have an impact on the significance of the

found differences between the languages.

However, there were two exceptions. Regarding the Quaker ad, the significant differences

between Dutch and English (in favour of Dutch) for the items worthless - worth having

and annoying - pleasing of product attitude disappeared when the third factor was

added8. Thus, the differences in answers on these items do not depend on the caption

language, but rather on how the respondents perceived the match between the caption

language and the promoted brand. A look at Figure 4 in paragraph 7.3.1 shows that, for

the Quaker ad, the average score for perceived match is indeed higher for the Dutch 8 c.f. Appendix 7 for the outcome of the covariate analysis

Page 41: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

36

version than for the English one. However, Table 1 indicates that this difference is not

significant.

Lastly, we compared the scores on perceived match with the respondents' purchase

intention, parallel to the study of Hornikx et al. (2013). For the Quaker ad, we found a

significant difference between Dutch and French in terms of perceived match, in favour of

Dutch. A look at the item of purchase intention with a significant difference between those

two languages showed that the average score was higher for Dutch than for French.

Although no statistical test was performed to prove this observed correlation, it can be

considered an indication that the better the respondents' perceived match between

caption language and brand, the higher their purchase intention. In that sense, our

findings are in line with those of Hornikx et al. (2013).

8. Conclusion

In this paper, qualitative and quantitative research methods were used to study language

use in influencer ad captions on Instagram from two different perspectives, i.e. that of the

influencer (8.1) and that of the targeted millennial (8.2).

8.1 Qualitative research (interviews)

RQ1: What motives do influencers have for using a certain language for their

Instagram captions?

The influencers' language use seems to be primarily based on their own preference and

identity. Although they all have some diverse reasons for using Dutch, English and/or

French, one motive applies for all of them. Namely, they write in the language in which

they feel most comfortable and most able to express themselves. The promoted product

or brand does not seem to have an impact on their language choice, whereas for two of

the three influencers, the target audience does.

8.2 Quantitative research (survey)

For each cluster, language and brand, the average scores were rather low. Possible

explanations for that could be a general negative attitude towards influencer marketing

or a general disliking of the advertised products or brands, for example.

RQ2: Are there significant differences between Dutch, English and French in terms

of attitude towards the ad, perceived message credibility, product attitude and

purchase intention?

Page 42: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

37

Caption language does have an impact, especially on millennials' product attitude. For this

variable, significant differences were found between Dutch and English on the one hand

and Dutch and French on the other hand, both at the level of the cluster and that of the

items. Perceived message credibility and purchase intention also seem to be affected by

the caption language, but to a much lesser extent than product attitude.

RQ3: Which language are the significant differences in favour of?

In all cases where a significant difference was found, i.e. at the level of the clusters and at

that of the items, the average scores were higher for Dutch than for the two other

languages. This implies that the use of Dutch captions in Instagram influencer ads, as

opposed to the use of English or French ones, definitely has a more positive impact on

these millennials' product attitude, and, although to a much lesser extent, also on (certain

aspects of) their perceived message credibility and purchase intentions.

RQ4: Does the respondents' perceived match between brand and caption language

have an impact on the significant differences?

Only for two items of Quaker product attitude, the found differences in answers depended

more on the perceived match than on the caption language. In all other cases, the

differences were attributable to the caption language.

8.3 Recommendations

The use of Dutch captions seems to be more favourable for millennials' product attitude.

When targeting Dutch-speaking 18 to 24 year olds on Instagram, influencers promoting a

particular product are thus advised to use Dutch in their captions rather than English or

French. That way, they could influence their followers' attitudes towards that product in a

positive way. Influencer agencies, in their turn, can play their part by engaging influencers

that mainly post in Dutch or by instructing other influencers to do so.

This would be beneficial to the companies that invest in influencer marketing, as more

positive product attitudes could eventually lead to higher sales. On the other hand, it

would also bring advantages for the influencers themselves. Their influencer ads would

become more effective and therefore more appreciated by the sponsoring brands, which,

in turn, may lead to more and/or longer collaborations. Lastly, engaging the right

influencers, i.e. with the most favourable language use (Dutch), will allow influencer

agencies to maintain their business relations with sponsoring companies.

When considering millennials' attitudes towards the ad, perceived message credibility

and purchase intentions, influencers are not advised to use a specific language rather than

another one, as our study demonstrated that caption language does not have a (large)

impact on those variables.

Page 43: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

38

9. Limitations and further research

Most of the following limitations are due to the limited time frame in which this study has

been carried out.

First of all, an important limitation of this study is that the items within the clusters were

only analyzed for the two brands separately. An analysis of the two brands together

would have eliminated the possibility that the differences in answers (also) depend on the

(type of) product or brand and would possibly have leaded to other results.

Relating to the linguistic aspect of influencer ads, research on the impact of different ways

of formulating a caption (e.g. direct promotion vs. story telling) may also be useful. This

suggestion is based on the intuition of an interviewed influencer that the way in which a

caption is formulated could have more impact on attitudes and opinions than the

language itself.

Furthermore, it would be interesting to also identify the possible impact of self-assessed

language knowledge, gender and age on the found significant differences. In this case, we

only compared the results with the respondents' perceived match between caption

language and brand. Moreover, instead of (only) identifying the impact of caption

language, a look at the possible differences in attitude towards the ad, purchase intention

etc. based on age, gender or language knowledge may also lead to interesting results.

Lastly, some rather obvious suggestions for further research would be to include and

compare other and more languages, other variables (e.g. brand attitude) and other

respondents (e.g. bilinguals) in the study.

Natalie (Dutch)

Dag Natalie. Vertel eens iets over jezelf.

Page 48: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

43

Page 49: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

44

Met welke merken werk je zoal samen? Vooral heel veel beautymerken, parfums, make-up zoals L’Oréal.

Page 50: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

45

Eline (Dutch)

Dag Eline. Vertel eens iets over jezelf. Hallo.

Page 51: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

46

Page 52: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

47

Page 53: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

48

Page 54: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

49

Page 55: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

50

Page 56: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

51

1. Parlez PR and Communications

indrukkwekkend klantenportfolio opgebouwd. Zo hebben ze bijvoorbeeld al influencer

campagnes opgestart voor Côte d'Or, Delhaize, Nutricia, Lipton, Leo, Campina, Red Bull

merken zoals Pure Leaf, GROM, Looza, Nutricia, Côte d'Or, Lipton... de onderstaande

taken uitgevoerd.

Page 79: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

2.1 Influencer campagnes

gebracht hadden of gingen brengen.

Page 80: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

online.

2.3 Social media management

o Instagram content calendars opstellen.

Mijn

taken daarbij waren:

Parlez was

Mijn

specifieke taken voor dit evenement:

Page 81: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

aantal teamleden samengesteld waren.

Page 83: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

journalistieke wereld moest insturen of opdrachten moest uitvoeren.

Zij was degene

was.

Page 84: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

3.3 Organisatie

Oprichter Bert vertelde me tijdens mijn

of the team.

Page 87: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

3. LEO Best man: influencer NL (KEVIN)

vinden.

4. LEA Maid of honor: influencer FR (VIRGINIE)

Page 89: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

gewoon lekker.

5. Master of ceremony

6. LEO best man: influencer FR ALEXANDRE (vows Leo to Lea)

7. LEA Maid of honor: influencer NL JILL (vows Lea to Leo)

mijn perfecte match. Knapperig vanbuiten, teder vanbinnen… Wat heeft een koekje nog meer nodig?

8. Bettina - Pink Ribbon (about Pink Ribbon) – gives good advice to the happy couple

Page 90: Captions of influencer ads on Instagram: The …...world’s lingua franca, English is by far the most popular language for (influencer ad) captions on Instagram, but there are still

Pink Ribbon team extra bedanken.

9. Master of ceremony YES word

10. Closing by Master of ceremony

MOC: Beste LEO…

Enjoy!
