For those who were at the bus trip to Lakewood on February 12th it was a great treat to see Len Kennett. He was there to hit golf balls (a large bucket by the way), and again he held a large captive au-dience whenever he speaks. On Wednesday, February 10th, the commemorative bench located at the first tee was dedicated as a tribute to Len Kennett by members of the Men’s Club, as well as representatives from the County of Los Angeles and the SCGA. Len served as the head golf professional at the opening of Los Verdes, found-ed the Men’s and Women’s clubs, and supported Junior Golf in the South Bay for many years. Thanks also go to GM Bob Lockhart and Course Superintendent Scott Young for their assistance with the positioning and landscaping of this project. I also talked to Bob Lockhart about the locker room upgrade, and it is in the final bid process, with the walk through with contractors in the first week of April. The new bar and revamp of the restaurant will be moving forward sometime in August, and the new poles for the driving range are on order and should be here in about 2-3 weeks. Thursday’s team play (div#9) finished with a record of 3-3 and in Second place to winner El Dorado. Saturdays’ team play (div#11) finished with a record of 2-3-1 and in Third place to the winners Brookside. Don’t forget to sign up for the Satellite Tournaments you can’t win if you don’t sign up. IF YOU HAVE WON A STARTING TIME IN THE RAFFLE YOU MUST CALL 10 DAYS INADVANCE. If you want to improve you must practice. Bob Rogers

Tournament Recap

Ben Serns

The February tournament was one to remem-ber, with great weather, great golf, and it was Kevin Burke’s birthday. Mario Yeaman and his son Mario Yeaman Jr, had the low net round of the day with a 57.3 (71 gross) After Mario completed the round, he asked me if a 57 was any good. Uh, I believe so. Hal Holker and Willie Krenz shot a net 58 to take low net in their flight. Jesper Lykke and Doug Lennig shot 69 gross (58 low net) to win in their flight. Greg Mather (alias: Benny dah Broom) and Tracey Kirkpatrick were ok with that since it put them in the 1st place low net in the flight. In the side-pots we had a rare thing happen. Group #1 only had one skin! Five (5) holes were 2 tie –all tie, and Preston Mercer & Scott Sullivan won the lone skin on #6 with an eagle for $280 each. In Group #2 there were seven (7) 2 tie all-tie holes, and Matt Harris and John Norris won 3 skins, while Jesper Lykke and Doug Lennig won one skin. The weekday tournament low score was shot by Steve Armitage and Al Gates with a 65 to win the Casper flight .Winning the Trevino flight was Bill Schnicke and Steve Bergman with 69. This month we are playing a 4-some 2-best ball/6-hole rotation on tournament day. Weekday play will have an Individual low net. Remember…we are playing Winter Rules for March … and please don’t forget to Post Your Own Score. See you meeting night. Ben Tournament Chairman

Rules Are Rules Chris Ratay

Got Divots? Here at Los Verdes we have more than our fair share of divot holes. And nobody likes to hit a good shot down the middle and find out it ended up in a big divot hole! Everybody should replace their divots but unfortunately we know the reality of it. Personally, I believe that if your divot has a decent root base it should be replaced. After a little scrub with your cleats in the divot hole, a gentle but firm step on the replaced divot will set the roots. Otherwise it should be filled with sand in consideration of the following players. A replaced divot will repair itself in less than a week while an open divot may take well over a month to fully recover. Not Too High, But Not Too Low I have had Course Superintendents over the years complain about divot holes being filled too high with sand and not being good for the mower blades. Also, I have had issues with people that sprinkle sand in divot holes that just covers the dirt. The best way to fill a divot hole is to fill it a good bit over the height of the surrounding ground level. That way a ball will roll away from the divot hole and back to the regular turf condition. Kick It Inward I find that if the divot is not healthy to replace and there is no sand availa-ble, a good way to help it heal is to gently kick in the sides of the divot with your cleats to help the outlying grass begin to grow into and over the divot hole. Try it, you will like it. It makes you feel green. Replace It Forward As LVMC members, we are all ambassadors for the well-being of the golf course. Congratulations! I like to walk, and when I come across a nice healthy divot I pick it up and find the next divot hole I can put it in. Some-times I save it on my cart for a while until I find a new home for it. The Sandy Men, Our Heroes I want to recognize some of our Local Los Verdes Heroes. I think they are mostly past members. I congratulate them every Sunday when I play. They are Course Ambassador Heroes. I see the due diligence that they have done for so many years that they have played golf every Saturday. They ride when they play and they take about 40 bottles of sand for each side. The gentlemen I want to recognize are: Sandy Pringle, Roy Otsuka, Bob Gawn, Scott Clevergon, Tom Levia, and Dennis Levia. My hat is off to you gentlemen for your good deed. Thank you. Something Tells Me I Have Been In A Few divot holes lately I have been in too many bad divot hole lies, but after this article, I am al-most over it. That is until next Sunday when I play LV again. Enjoy your day on the course with friends, be knowledgeable of the rules (rule 9-2), play golf by the rules (rule 1-1), and utilize the rules to your advantage (my rule).
