It has an extensive distribution network, consisting of major distribution facilities, as well as regional and metropolitan centres with an extensive range of products and logistics capabilities. With around 820 staff, the company’s operations throughout Australia reflect significant industry skills and expertise as well as a comprehensive

and career progression for both personal and professional growth.Integral to this is the promoting of a work/life balance with employees. Capral understands that flexibility is key to having happy, healthy and productive staff members.Safety has always remained

product range and innovative R&D capability.

absolutely paramount. Capral’s motto is Safety First - meaning the safety and well being of “ourselves, our colleagues, customers, suppliers and anyone who deals with our business.” CEO and Managing Director Tony Dragicevich says: “The well being of our employees and those working with

us is of primary importance. It is the responsibility of all individuals to act in a responsible manner to achieve a safe and healthy workplace.”As a local manufacturer, Capral has a commitment to comply fully with environmental regulations and standards in its manufacturing and finishing operations. “Understanding the full life cycle impact of products requires manufacturing processes and materials to be traced back to their source,” the company says. Capral’s manufacturing footprint includes extrusion and distribution facilities in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia and all have the ability to supply world class products at short lead times.

SUSTAINABILITYCapral is always careful to minimise its impact on the environment. Whether it’s by consolidating deliveries to fabricators once they are transported in bulk loads to regional distribution centres or making sure its products are easily recyclable.“Aluminium boasts one of the highest recycling rates of any metal,” states Capral. “At the end of their long life, Capral extrusions can be readily recycled.” Recycled aluminium generally falls into two broad categories.New scrap resulting from a manufacturing process such as extrusion is often not contaminated and of known quality which means it enjoys an almost 100% recycle rate.

The company adds that old scrap, such as that from beverage cans, building and transport is gathered and recycled via an efficient network of scrap metal merchants which sort and separate it from other metals such as iron and steel. This scrap is most usually remelted by secondary refiners into silicon based alloys used predominantly for aluminium castings. The figures behind recycling aluminium make it an excellent source of renewal. As little as 5% of the initial energy consumed to create it is used to recycle it. This means recycling one tonne of aluminium saves 5 tonnes of bauxite and 15,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.

ONESTEEL ALUMINIUMIn 2013, Capral undertook the $19 million acquisition of OneSteel Aluminium from OneSteel Trading Pty Limited, which is a subsidiary of Arrium Limited. The synergy between the two companies was clear; OneSteel was a specialist aluminium distribution business selling both extrusion and rolled products, with markets including transport, marine, machinery and sheet metal fabrication. With similar channels to market, at the time Capral announced that it expected to realise synergies of between $2.5 and $5.0 million annually over the following three years. The acquisition was labelled as strategically important for Capral to become an expanded full offer aluminium distribution business.

ANTI-DUMPING Capral is committed to anti-dumping reform in Australia and has campaigned hard against the ’dumping’ of aluminium products by mainly Chinese companies onto the Asia market. The term refers to manufacturers exporting aluminium product to another country at a price either below the price charged in its home market or below its cost of productionIn this case, the product is produced at below cost levels because of the excess production in China. Earlier this year, PanAsia Aluminium, China’s biggest exporter of aluminium products to Australia, was found to have not paid its duties but the Anti-Dumping Commission (ADC). As a result, the Minister imposed substantial dumping duties, totalling 57.6%, on all PanAsia extrusion imports into the country.Capral is part of the Manufacturing Australia (MA), an alliance of some of Australia’s largest manufacturers. Its Executive Director Ben Eade applauded such a tough stance from the ADC. He commented: “Without strong anti-dumping enforcement, Australian manufacturers have little recourse against illegal dumping, a practice that has led some manufacturers to the brink of closure.”With this decision helping to enable Capral to compete on an even playing field in Australia, it is testament to the company’s durability and consistent quality that its stock is set to continue to rise even in such a tough industry.
