Question 4 of CAPF AC Paper-2 is about writing precis of given passage.

It carries 15 marks out of 200 marks and you get 10 minutes to solve it.

Please note that you have to solve it in ENGLISH language only.

The actual question looks like:

Write the precis. As far as possible, in your own words. State the number of words at the end

of the answer. Write the precis on the separate sheets provided and fasten them to the answer

PRECIS WRITING(साराांश लेखन)What is a Precis ?(साराांश लेखन क्या है?)

A precise is like a miniature portrait of the passage.

It retains the absolute essential points accompanied with the mood and tone of

the author of the passage. The one aspect one must be careful about is that on

e should not add one’s subjective interpretation or comments to the précis and

should try to retain the original author’s voice and opinions. As far as the writing

style is concerned, one must ensure that one write clear and effective sentence

s (no rambling) and one’s diction is flawless. Ultimately, it the coherence of the

views that you presented in the précis that matters and this can be achieved by

making sure that one is precise and to the point in one’s approach. Unnecessar

ily long sentences or rambling thoughts are not required in précis writing, and

one should make sure that one shifts from one point to another in a smooth

Manner. At the end of the day, the précis should make sense and be logical

in its presentation.

What a precis is not(क्या नह ां है):The following things should not be a part of the precis:

• simply a summary of a passage.

• simply an abstract of a passage

• an outline of a passage.

• a mere selection of a few important sentences from a pass-

age.

• a collection of disconnected facts and statements.

Features of a Good PrecisA good Precis:

1. is marked by clarity, brevity and precision.

2. is not just lifting of the sentences from the original.

3. It should be written in the precis writer's own words.

4. is a miniature version of the original passage.

5. must have a logical order and be well-knit and well conne-

cted.

6. must have coherence; must use linking devices such as

so, therefore, and, because, further etc.

7. and must follow the order of ideas of the original.

8. is written in reported speech.

9. must not contain any details not found in the original.

Do's in a précis(क्या करना चाहहए):

• Start your précis by highlighting the main idea of the passage and

you should create contextual environment where you can place the

necessary points. (मुख्य विचार को उजागर करके अपनी प्रैसस शुरू करें )• Once the main idea is established in the précis, you can present the

methods, points, facts etc. used by the author of the passage.(मुख्य विचार प्रैसी में स्थावपत हो जाने के बाद, आप लेखक द्िारा उपयोग ककए जाने िाले तर के, अांक, तथ्यों आहद प्रस्तुत कर सकत ेहै)

• Compress and clarify a lengthy passage, while retaining important

concepts, key words, and important data.(महत्िपूर्ण अिधारर्ाओां, कुां जी शब्दों और महत्िपूर्ण डटेा को बनाए रखत ेहुए,पैसेज को सांकुचचत और स्पष्ट करें )• Remove what is superfluous and retain the core essence of the work.

(ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा ज़रूर ननकालें और काम के मुख्य तत्ि को बनाए रखें )• Always remember that mentions about history/writing about history

should be advisably done in the past tense.(हमेशा याद रखना कक इनतहास के बारे में/ इनतहास लेखन के बारे में,past tense उपयोग में लाना चाहहए।)

Don'ts in a précis(क्या नह ां करना चाहहए)

• Do not express your own opinion, wish, remark or criticism.(अपनी राय, इच्छा, हटप्पर्ी या आलोचना मत व्यक्त करें)

• Do not insert any question in your précis. Its significance, if essential, may be expressed by a statement.(अपने प्रैसस मेंकोई भी प्रश्न सम्ममसलत न करे, यहद आिश्यक हो, तो उसे एक बयान सेव्यक्त ककया जा सकता है।)

• Do not use abbreviations or contractions.(सांक्षेप या सांकुचनका उपयोग न करें)

• Do not be jerky. This suggests that most probably, you ha

ve not understood the sense of the passage properly.

(झटकेदार मत बनो, इससे पता चलता है कक आपको पैसेज ठीक से समझ नह ां आ रहा है।)

What to do(क्या करे)

1. The first thing is that one needs to convey the general idea ofthe argument with absolute clarity.(स्पष्टता के साथ तकण से सामान्यविचार को व्यक्त करने की आिश्यकता है।)

2. The second thing that you need to do is to make sure that all

the important points of the original passage are included inthe precis. (सुननम्श्चत करें कक मूल पैसेज के सभी महत्िपूर्ण बब ांदओुां को पे्रससमें शासमल ककया गया है)

3. Lastly, make sure that the language of the précis is clear, crispand concise, and follows the rule for correct diction.(सुननम्श्चतकरें कक वप्रसेस की भाषा स्पष्ट और सांक्षक्षप्त है, और सह शब्दशोधन के सलएननयम का पालन करता है)

General guidelines you should follow

while writing a précis:(कैसे करना है)

• Closely read the passage, and identify the central idea of the passage. It is vital toidentify the general idea of the passage and incorporate it in one’s précis.(ठीक से पसेैजपढ़ना, और उसके कें द्रीय विचार की पहचानऔर इसे प्रसैस में शासमल करना महत्िपरू्ण है)

• Look-out for the total number of words. If the number is not provided, quickly calculate the number using approximations.(कुल शब्दों की संख्या देखें। यदद संख्या प्रदाननहीं की गई है, तो अनमुानों का उपयोग करके संख्या को तुरंत गर्ना करें)

• In order to understand the passage clearly, make sure that you read the passageclosely, and give it a couple of reads before you start writing the précis.(पसेैज कोस्पष्ट रूप से समझने के सलए ध्यान दे के २-३ बार पढे़)

• Highlight the most important points in the passage, and make notes. Leave out all non-essential information from the précis.(पसेैज में सबसे महत्िपरू्ण बबदंओंु को हाइलाइट करेंऔर नोट्स बनाएं। प्रेसी से सभी अनािश्यक जानकारी छोड़ दें)

• You should try to arrange the points in most logical order, and ensure the order of thought is the same as the original.(तार्कण क क्रम में व्यिस्था करने की कोसशश करनी चादहए औरयह सनुनश्श्चत करना चादहए र्क मलू के विचारों का क्रम समान है)

General guidelines(Contd.)• The three grammatical rules you need to follow while writing a précis are:

• write it in third person (तृतीय पुरुष में लिखे)

• indirect form (अप्रत्यक्ष )

• and appropriate past tense.(और उलित जगह भूतकाि का प्रयोग)

• It is advisable to provide designations of officials rather than names and

titles. In case the official designation is not provided, you can use thepersonal name. kindly be consistent with the pattern you adopt.(नाम औरखखताब के बजाय अचधकाररयों के पदनाम का प्रयोग करे। यहद आचधकाररक पद प्रदान नह ांककया गया है, तो आप व्यम्क्तगत नाम का उपयोग कर सकते हैं। आपके द्िारा अपनाने िालेपैटनण के साथ सांगत रहें.)

• Make sure you review your rough draft, remove the chinks and ensure that you have made no language related errors.(आप अपने मसौदे की समीक्षा करें औरसनुनम्श्चत करें कक आपने कोई भाषा सांबांचधत त्रुहटयाां नह ां बनाई हैं)

• Before writing your précis, make sure you have a glance over the originalto make sure you have not missed anything.(आपने कुछ भी नह ां छोडा है यहसनुनम्श्चत करने के सलए मलू पैसेज पर एक नज़र डाले।)

• Finally, count the words of your precis and put them down in a bracket at the end.(अपने शब्दों की चगनती कर के उन्हें अांत में ब्रैकेट में डाल दें)

Writing a Precis of a given passage.Sample Passage:

There is an enemy beneath our feet - an enemy more deadly for his complete impartiali-

ty. He recognizes no national boundaries, no political parties. Everyone in the world is

threatened by him. The enemy is the earth itself. When an earthquake strikes, the world

trembles. The power of a quake is greater than anything man himself can produce. But

today scientists are directing a great deal of their effort into finding some way of

combating earthquakes, and it is possible that at some time in the near future mankind

will have discovered a means of protecting itself from earthquakes. An earthquake strike

s without warning. When it does, its power is immense. If it strikes a modern city, the

damage it causes is as great as if it has struck a primitive village. Gas mains burst,

explosions are caused & fires are started. Underground railways are wrecked. Buildings

collapse, bridges fall, dams burst, gaping crevices appear in busy streets. If the quake st

rikes at sea, huge tidal waves sweep inland. If it strikes in mountain regions, avalanches

roar down into the valley. Consider the terrifying statistics from the past 1755: Lisbon, ca

pital of Portugal - the city destroyed entirely and 450 killed. 1970: Peru: 50,000 killed. In

1968 an earthquake struck Alaska. As this is a relatively unpopulated part, only a few pe

ople were killed. But it is likely that this was one of the most powerful quakes ever to ha

ve hit the world. Geologists estimate that during the tremors, the whole of the state mo

ved over 80 feet farther west into the Pacific Ocean. CONTD.....

Imagine the power of something that can move an entire subcontinent! This is

the problem that the scientists face. They are dealing with forces so immense

that man cannot hope to resist them. All that can be done is to try to pinpoint

just where the earthquake will strike and work from there. At least some

precautionary measures can then be taken to save lives & some of the property.
