Capel Music FestivalWe are a non-profit making organisation run by local volunteers and supported by local musicians and businesses all giving their time and/or services for free or at minimal cost.

The Committee:Phil Partridge, Phil Ware, Stuart Ferguson, Luke Margetts, Emma Jaques, Tamara Pearce, Mary Huggins, Mark Sugden-Best, Sandra Ewart, Kate Selley, David Silliman, Sally Wyborn and Ali Martin.

Plus many, many kind and generous helpers. A special thank you to Julia Horrox for her help with sponsors, stalls and raffle prizes, a big thanks to ‘Progression’ for the large stage signs and for the printing support and a thank you to the camera club, with special mention to Bob Arthur, for donating their time and photos at the Pre-event and on the main day.

We are passionate about live music, village life and raising money for local good causes.

Building on the foundations laid by Phil Partridge’s 2008 Capel Music Party, this is now our 6th Festival. Up to 2013 we have raised £45,000 for charities, and this year we hope to raise more money than ever for The Amber Foundation and other small charities. If you are interested in sponsoring next year’s festival or helping in any way please contact us through the website. When you spend at the Capel Music Festival, you are donating directly to local charity. Whilst you are welcome to BYO food and drink, please remember to make a donation as well!

Raising money for careAmber is an active and accommodating residential centre helping disadvantaged 17-30 year olds and provides 24 hour care and support every day of the year for young homeless people; many have a history of addiction or have been involved in crime or have been in prison.

Able to support up to 32 individuals, it provides young people with a challenging and engaging step-by-step rebuilding process designed to help overcome each of the obstacles that have previously stood between them and independent living. Working in teams they experience positive peer support, feel valued and motivated.

There are many opportunities at Amber including art, crafts, extended education, music, drama and sport. Everyone is encouraged to set their own goals and begins to realise that with work, commitment, enthusiasm and determination, they are in fact able to achieve and fulfil potential.

Rachel Bartlett, Fundraiser at Amber said “we are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as key beneficiary of the Capel Music Festival 2014. It means a great deal to have such tremendous local support for our work with troubled youngsters.

We involved ourselves last year at the event by helping manage the car parking. It was a great example of pulling together across a community and saw Amber residents and volunteers working to help make this established event a success.

We are so grateful to the residents of Capel and all those supporting the event; this will truly make a significant difference in helping young people rebuild their lives”

For further information regarding Amber please contact Rachel Bartlett on 70879 415716 or email [email protected]

The Capel Open Mic’sThis year, as is our tradition, we will start the festival showcasing some of our brilliant local musical talent. Chris Brown and Will Martin (who collectively tour as “The Harmony”) will be performing some of their songs, as well as bring along some of their friends who simply enjoy their music, love playing and love performing.

2013 got off to a great start with the Capel Open Mic’s and we have asked them back again to get everyone in the mood for a great day of music!

Stephanie Davies & The (unplugged) Dynamics

Stephanie and the boys are very happy to have the opportunity to

play at CMF again. However this year, the Super Dynamics have to manage with a couple of absconders (in fairness, their holidays were booked ages ago), so this has given members of the band an excuse to go and buy a shed load of acoustic instruments and go unplugged

(although there is still some work to do to convince Dudley of the benefits of the wash-board and spoons). This will be a fairly unique

experience to see this band in this format and it will provide a platform to experience the wonderful Stephanie in a new way – Not to be missed.

Sweet RevengeSweet Revenge have been together for over three years now.  Based in Surrey, having met at school, they have been writing their own material of distinct rock.  The 14-15 year old boys are Freddie Wortley on vocals, Max Thilo guitar, Cam Stocks on bass and Josiah Kirpalani on drums.  Despite their young age, they have gathered much

experience at music and beer festivals, charity events and live radio shows.  The boys spent the beginning of 2014 at Yellow

Fish Studios recording their first 12-track album, Best Served Cold, which is available from their website, www.sweetrevenge.tv

The Music Makers

Page 12: Capel Music Festival | Program 2014

The Music Makersnew Rising

Drawing influence from a massive musical spectrum, Newrising combine elements of funk, roots, urban soul, reggae, blues, rock and latin. A distinctive sense of musical character resides throughout their infectious, well-sculpted songs.

They have shared stages with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Newton Faulkner, Mungo Jerry, and 10CC to name a few.

Newrising have also been featured at many of the UK’s best and biggest festivals including Bestival and Secret Garden Party as well as traveling abroad to play the Virgin Holiday’s Music Festival in Barbados two years running.

Now slaving away at their second album after catching the ears and imagination of Ed Sheeran and many more with their first. Here is a band worth keeping an ear to the ground for. www.newrising.co.uk | www.facebook.com/newrising | www.youtube.com/newrisinguk

Tony’s RaveTony Andrews has been designing World Class Professional Loudspeaker system for 45  years. He was personally recognised in 2007 by the

Professional Lighting and Sound Association when he received the Gottelier Award.  This was given in recognition of his pioneering work spanning three decades which, it was stated, had contributed significantly to advancing people’s enjoyment of live music and added

to the industry’s deeper understanding of loudspeaker design. He will be treating us to half an hour of his favourite dance music.

PrognosisThe Prognosis recently voted Winners of Prog Rock Magazines

Best Unsigned 2 Band Award 2013, originate from Dorking, an area rich in the Progressive rock music

tradition - members of Camel lived there, 10CC recorded their album Deceptive Bends at their

Strawberry recording studios in

Page 13: Capel Music Festival | Program 2014

The Music MakersDorking, and Genesis composed and played there.

Formed in 2005, The Prognosis are musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds – an organ scholar, an experimental synth-guitarist, an experienced jazz-rock drummer and two seasoned campaigners from the party-band circuit. Their passion is to recreate and perform a variety of classic prog-rock tracks with a level of authenticity and expertise befitting this music era as well as writing new progressive rock songs - but with a modern twist.

Today there are many tribute bands who focus on playing the work of only one band but The Prognosis is different. The band is a tribute to the genre and a time of incredible musical innovation. Their typical set list includes music from Genesis, Pink Floyd, Focus, Camel, ELP, Rush, Supertramp, Steve Hackett, Jethro Tull as well as their own original compositions.

Richard Flanders bass player with the band comments “We all live in Dorking and have loved writing our own songs about the eccentricities and stories of this great place. We have written songs about daily commuting, local Morris men, repressed country gentlemen and we really look forward to playing our music at the Capel Music festival for the first time”.

erikaWhen talking about ERIKA, it’s not really helpful to start with the ‘normal’

stuff. We could talk about where she is from and where she grew up and what her influences were but it’s not that easy to break ERIKA down into such small, convenient pigeon-holes.

Instead, know this: Erika has emerged from a life coloured by the musical corners of London town and Japan. While it was initially

opera and musical theatre in which she found her voice, as her birthdays passed she discovered the soundtrack to her early daydreams and pop

greats such as Kylie and Carly Simon made their influence. Later ERIKA found herself as much at home with the 90s rave scene as she did with the heavy rock scene and from this union of diversity emerges a style of ‘epic pop’. But don’t get complacent, ERIKA is not all catchy riffs and bubblegum. There is a darkness to her songs that you don’t have to dig that deep to find.

ERIKA’s vocals have caught the attention of a few established artist. ERIKA has been touring with MIKA as his backing singer around the world, playing from 20 to 50,000 people, she sings with hip-hop/metal pioneers, Senser through out UK and Europe. She was a guest vocalist for a few shows of Skunk Anansie’s European Tour in 2012 and was backing vocalist on their Acoustic shows in 2013. ERIKA also recently recorded a guest

Page 14: Capel Music Festival | Program 2014

The Music Makersvocal on 2 tracks with #1 UK artist, Bastille.

On stage ERIKA is an icon of fashion and confidence and coupled with a vulnerability that is hard to ignore, it is really only in her performance that you can fully understand how interesting and impressive ERIKA is.

“With powerful vocals and infectious energy, the crowd get on board as they play tracks from their forthcoming release. ERIKA certainly possesses a sense of urgency that commands attention.” CLINK MAGAZINE”. www.officiallyerika.com

Lisa kweiEarmarked as a highly promising emerging artist, Kwei has already

received support from the likes of legend DJ David Kid Jensen, esteemed producer Fraser T. Smith (Adele/’Set Fire To The Rain’) and fellow singer Sam Brown. Kwei’s distinct acoustic pop sound, which has been likened to artists such as Dido, KT Tunstall and Beth Orton, has seen her build a dedicated following.

Musically, Kwei’s songs create an uplifting feel, as dreamy chords, vocal harmonies and melodies intertwine. Her range of contrasting

influences neatly combines in her work to create something fresh and is showcased in new single ‘Take The Fire’.

Singer/Songwriter Lisa Kwei has begun her journey in taking her original music to the World and how wonderful its been so far! Her voice is amazing, her songs are uplifting and thought provoking and her music is Retro. classy, acoustic Pop and also a breath of fresh air! “Being inspired by the great songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Bob Marley etc, has helped Lisa in so many ways to finding her voice, soul and then adding her musical flavour.

Having gigged in many great venues such as the Troubadour, The Bedford and Guilfest 2012 plus private concerts playing to rooms full of fans which she thoroughly loves.

Her amazing band are second to none and all have the ability to bring something special to each part of the song with their instruments. “I am very much into the old

skool way of crafting a record with people I love and respect so the energy flow is at its best when Art is being created”.

She is a truly wonderful person and a great musician.“I hope you enjoy my record and feel the passion and creativity that

i have put into it, so that it may take you to another place, where you can dance, sing, cry, smile or just chill, Peace and love to

you all”. Lisa Kwei

The SoulCatzThe core of The Soul Katz have been together for over 20 years and whilst sets these days have to be managed time-wise to fit in various prostrate challenges, there is also a chemistry which always underpins their somewhat rare live performances. With a set that mostly sits in the classic back catalogue of STAX and Atlantic, this 10 piece band are always committed to making their shows lively, entertaining and most importantly fun (just don’t expect an encore if they’ve been on stage longer than an hour)

Our Compere: Matt fielderBorn in Barnes SW13 He began his music career in the eighties as a

lead vocalist with Heavy Rock band Hurricane Jane and  released a single ‘Written in your eyes’ in 86 which was produced by Stampede an ex UFO and Grand slam guitarist Laurence Archer.  After constant gigging and touring the circuit all over the country

(including the Marquee and The Astoria theatre) plus a few trips abroad subsequently released two albums ‘Rock is just a four letter

word’ in 1997 and ‘It’s all about finesse’ in 2001 which was produced by Ex Gillan and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Bernie Torme. In 2006 after a year working as a DJ at The Royal Marsden hospital he released a charity single’ Pride of a Nation’ to coincide with the World cup . This track was adopted by The St Georges day.com site (where it still is). Now working for London Media Company, he has a Son aged 10 , a daughter aged 5, married 22 years and is his 4th Capel appearance. His band is “The United Kingdom of Rock”.
