CAPE TOWN CAMPUS GRADUATION CLASS OF 2016

  • CLASS OF 2016

    CAPE TOWN DEAN’S REPORTGINA BONMARIAGE

    2016 has been a year

    of exciting new

    appointments and

    developments.

    In June of 2016 I

    joined the Cape Town

    campus as the Dean.

    I have been warmly

    welcomed by the staff.

    It has been a privilege

to get to know each one of them and to witness

their passion and dedication. My predecessor, Dr.

Chris John, moved into the position of President

of the AFDA Council, where, amongst many other

areas of responsibility, he is leading AFDA’s social

    responsibility initiatives.

In June too, Jon Racinskas took over the position

of Head of Film School. Jon has brought excellent

experience gained in the industries in the US,

Canada and Korea, and is leading his school with

    energy and vision.

Dr. Lucia Saks returned to South Africa from

Michigan to take up the position of Head of

Postgraduate, adding a high level of academic

    integrity to the department.

Andre du Toit joined AFDA as Operations

    Manager.

    Both experiemental and graduations festivals

showed strong and bold work from the students

to very receptive audiences and critics, whether

in live action films, documentaries, telenovelas,

animation, live performance in film, music

performance and stage. Of 17 productions

selected to travel to film festivals from the

AFDA graduating class of 2016, 7 were from the

Cape Town campus. The Cape Town animation

production Husse met Lang Ore was submitted

    for the CILECT prize.

Higher Certificate will see two cohorts of

graduating students, including 19 supported by

    the MICT SETA.

The new AFDA New theatre, 228 on Lower Main,

was launched for the experimental festival and

hosted enticing and provocative undergrad and

postgraduate stage performances, and a music

performance show, all well received by the

attending audiences and critics. The Honours stage

production was well received in Grahamstown,

and provided an enriching experience for the

students. Lara Bye was elected as a member of

    the Grahamstown Festival jury.

The theatre was selected to host the Cape Town

Fringe. This is part of a strategic plan, which,

while providing a space for students learning, opens

the interaction with the industry to facilitate students

connection with professionals, and professional work.

The campus is in the middle of an ambitious

building project. The new Postproduction building

will hold the lab facilites for sound design, VFX,

editing, data and image enhancement, as well as

new sound postproduction studios, a 7:1 cinema

and a motion capture studio. The design has

included a disabled lift for wheel chair access to

all floors. The completion is set for April 2017.

The move of Postproduction into its new home

will open up facilities for the new home of the

    Business Innovation Technologies courses,

BCOM and BCT, which were launched this year.

BIT has already seen exciting interaction between

the two courses and the LP school to produce

    a noteworthy innovative business proposition.

Having successfully completed this first year BIT

will move the second and new first year students

of these courses into their new home in 2017.

Cape Town AFDA alumnus Darryn Joshua,

director of the film Noem My Skollie, which was

nominated to represent South Africa at the

Oscars, added his words of inspiration to the

celebrations in a fabulously dynamic Awards

event on the AFDA campus, the closing event of

    the year.

The graduation ceremony of the class of 2016

will take place on the 10th of March 2017 at the

Baxter Theatre, and the guest speaker will be

Mr Dave Duarte who is a passionate educator

as well as being the founder of Treeshake, a

    communications consultancy specialising in

digitally led campaigns for change. He has given

talks and workshops in more than 20 countries,

to hundreds of audiences including talks at the

United Nations, TEDx, and the World Economic

    Forum in Davos.

I would like to thank the staff for their continued

commitment to and support of their students

    through this year of learning.
