CAPE HENRYSHORES Civic Association
Quarterly NewsletterFall 2015 Edition
Happy Thanksgiving!
Welcome to new CHS residents and hello to all current neighbors. This is our quarterly electronic newsletter that is distributed via email. The newsletter is sent before the next quarterly civic association meeting which is open to all residents. You are most welcome and encouraged to attend! The meeting is regularly held at the Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church Community Center (2212 West Great Neck Road) at 7:30 PM. Look for the reminder sign posted near the announcement box on Kendall Street toward the entrance of our neighborhood. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1st. Block captains are requested to attend to discuss the development of a neighborhood storm recovery plan. Other items on the agenda include the Christmas Party, Treasurer’s report and the new directory. If you have something you would like to add to the agenda, please contact the CHSCA President, Joe Avallone at 496-3188 or [email protected].
Block captains have been updating contact information for each address so that we can print a new neighborhood directory. In addition to names, phone numbers and addresses, the directory contains a helpful map that indicates each block and lot number. It will also include the revised neighborhood restrictions, reservations and easements applicable by the City of Virginia Beach. If your dues are up to date your household can expect to receive a new directory. If you business is interested in placing an advertisement in the directory, please contact our Treasurer, Dick Robbins as soon as possible at 481-2675 or [email protected]. The rates for advertizing in the newsletter and the directory can be found on page 5.
If you have not already signed up for the online network called “Nextdoor” you should consider it a valuable resource. The Virginia Beach Police Department recommended it in their recent Crime Prevention Unit Fall Newsletter. You can get email updates on postings related directly to Cape Henry Shores and with the “Nearby Neighborhoods” selected, you will also see information for Cape Story By The Sea, Lynnhaven Shores, Broad Bay Island and others as you choose. Information categories include Classifieds, Crime & Safety, Free Items, Lost & Found and Recommendations.

With many thanks to our Social Chair Sarah Evans, CHS residents enjoyed a fabulous annual block party last August and we look forward to the CHSCA Christmas Party on December 13th (see page 4). We also would like to thank the individuals and businesses that sponsored the block party and/or provided gift certificates for the raffle.
Hopefully you have all noticed the new bright paint job and replacement letters on our front entrance signs. Be sure to thank Jerry and Judy Bland for their outstanding efforts in keeping our neighborhood entrance looking sharp. Their recent time-consuming refurbishment included the procurement of replacement letters and securing them to prevent recurring theft. These letters have become very expensive, $200 for the last two, so please be vigilant if you see someone trying to remove them.
Lastly, if you have any questions, concerns or would like to provide content for the newsletter, please contact me at [email protected] or call 757-228-3572.
Wishing all residents a safe and happy holiday!

Note from CHSCA Treasurer
Dick Robbins
“Thank you so much to the 90% of residents who paid their annual dues for 2015. Although expenses for this year have been a little more than budgeted we are in good shape and should be able to maintain our the annual dues at their current level of $25.”

We had such a delightfully evening for our annual Block Party on Sunday August 30, 2015! For those of you that missed it, please think of coming next year! Certain highlights were enjoying music from our Cape Story
neighbor Bob Linsly and our own Liz Needham! The kids had great fun in the Cunningham’s back yard with potato sack races, hot chili pepper game, corn hole and more with prizes for all. Not only did the kids have prizes, but the adults had great prizes as well in our annual raffle and 50/50. Some of those
prizes were gift certificates to Lynnhaven Fish House, Guadalajara, Stoley, Hot Tuna, ShoreBreak, Longs Jewelers, Neighborhood Harvest, several hair salons,
Window Genie, Fleet Feet, a home printer, a back to school basket and so much more!
Each year we seem to be growing the size of our party. We had over 20 kids and over 120 adults! Again, we would like to thank Susie Asercion and Mark
and Nancy Cunningham for allowing us the use of their beautiful yards. Thanks again to our “Master Chef ” Mark Cunningham who does a wonderful
job at the grill. Thanks Mark!
Our sponsors are the best! Tim Cochran, H20 Realtor. Eastern Marine Construction Curtis and Edith Estes, Jerry & Mary Rusz, Lynne Hume, Realtor ReMax, Tom & Ellen Johnson, Joe & Jan Avallone, Dryer Vent Wizard, Nancy
Cunningham. Thanks to you all for your generosity!
Additionally, I would like to thank all of our wonderful neighbors who really pitched in and helped. Chris Curran, Mary & Chris Souther, Randy & Ellen Carlson, Kevin and Sandy Tucker and many, many more!! We had extremely
delicious side dishes and great prizes for our raffle. Much kudos goes out to all of you that helped in making the Block Party such a great success!
I look forward to seeing you in the neighborhood and at our upcoming Holiday party at Murphy’s Irish Pub!
More to come on that event so save the date 12/13/15 at 6pm.
