Fisheries Galleries Redesign Project: Last October CAM received a highly competitive $30,000 planning grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to plan the redesign and reinstallation of the Fisheries Galleries, an area not addressed in the 2014 renovation. The receipt of the grant has brought renewed interest and energy to re-telling the fisheries story and re-envisioning the galleries. Over the past few months the Fisheries Advisory Commit-tee has taken part in informational tours of a number of museums, including visits to the US Constitution Museum and the Old State House. We’ve also hosted focus groups for stakeholders in the community and the industry, and surveyed members and visitors to the Museum for input. The final plan will be submitted to NEH in December 2017, followed by a request for support to implement the plan.

Architectural Concept Study: Conversations regarding a potential gift of a significant Cape Ann collection prompted CAM to engage DesignLAB Architects (the firm that de-signed the 2014 renovation) to study how we might maxi-mize or “build out” our existing buildings and properties to add new galleries, collections storage and work spaces. This project is funded by support from two major donors and is ongoing.

2017–2027 Strategic Plan: The CAM Board re-engaged Technical Development Corporation (TDC) consultants and reassembled the Strategic Planning Committee to review our current status, to develop a new vision and to deliver a strategic plan for the next ten years. Information from the Museum Assessment Program, the Systems Replacement Plan, the Fisheries Gallery Plan and the Architectural Con-cept Study will inform the strategic planning process. We expect to complete the Strategic Plan in fall/winter 2017.

The Cape Ann Museum has a uniquely focused mission and the American Alliance of Museum’s self-assessment project validated the importance of being mission-driven. Our ex-periences over the past year confirmed that there is power in being a small, intimate museum with a stellar collection and a singular story to tell. Our challenge is to be the very best. We value the many contributions you make to help us get there.

Sincerely,

John Cunningham Ronda FaloonPresident of the Board Executive Director

Dear Friends,

It is with great pleasure that we present the Cape Ann Muse-um’s 2016 Annual Report. The following pages represent a summary of the past year’s activities and accomplishments. As always, none of our achievements would be possible without the ongoing participation and enthusiastic support from you —our members, friends, volunteers and visitors. Thank you!

Those of you who’ve been following the growth of the Mu-seum over the last few years know that we are an institution with high standards and ambitious goals seeking to be one of the best small museums in the country. With the 2016 Strategic Plan due for an update, Board and staff spent much of the past year considering “next steps.” What will CAM look like in 10 years? How do we want to grow? What will our collections’ priorities be? What new audiences will we reach and how? How do we ensure that we continue to tell the Cape Ann story in a compelling manner and that we remain relevant to our communities, and beyond? In the process of exploring these questions we’ve spent consider-able time talking with peer and “aspirational” institutions, touring their facilities and sharing our challenges. What we’ve learned has been invaluable. We researched and methodically worked on a number of significant projects in 2016, and their completion will inform our new strategic plan, and in the end, strengthen the Museum’s future collec-tions, facilities, staff, programming and finances.

2016 INITIATIVESAmerican Alliance of Museums (AAM) Accreditation: In March 2016, the Board agreed that CAM should work toward AAM accreditation. Among the many benefits of accreditation is national recognition for a commitment to excellence and high professional standards. The first step of this multi-year process is to participate in the Museum Assessment Program (MAP), a self-assessment of a muse-um’s operations, followed by a peer review and report with recommendations. CAM completed the self-assessment process in December 2016 and hosted a peer reviewer in April 2017. The MAP phase should be completed in early summer 2017.Systems Replacement Plan: CAM received a matching grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council Facilities Fund to complete a systems replacement analysis, which included a comprehensive survey of CAM’s facilities and a projection of the capital investments required to maintain them for the next 20 years. CAM completed the analysis and received a final report in August 2016.

Christy Park — Ploughshares: Lines from Isaiah Park’s installation, created from old tools and implements com-bined with mixed media, was from a series about war and inspired by lines from the Book of Isaiah. Christy lives in Gloucester and is professor emerita at Massachusetts College of Art.

Kathleen Williams — In the Heart of Place: Image and Expression Williams’ installation paired photog-raphy with the written word and used the historic property to explore the emotional connections people have to particular places. Kathleen resides in Magnolia.

Bobbi Gibb — 26.2 Expressions Gibb, the first woman to run and complete the Boston Marathon in 1966, showed a selection of paintings, sculpture, murals and mixed media works. The installation coincided with the 50th anniversary of her historic run. Bobbi is a Rockport resident.

Leslie Lyman and Karen Battles — Here, Long Ago Lyman and Battles’ installation employed a variety of quotidien objects and artifacts within the context of the old house to spark visitors’ imaginations about the stories held within objects and dwellings. Leslie creates art at her home in Beverly Farms; Karen is a graphic designer living in Newburyport.

WHITE - E LLE RY HOUSE E XHIBITIONS

The White–Ellery House (1710) has served as the backdrop for a series of one-day contemporary art installations and historical presentations since 2009. These pro-grams attract new audiences to the historic property and encourage spirited exchange and reflection between visitors and artists. Support for this program was provided by The Umberto Romano and Clorinda Romano Foundation, which celebrates Umberto Romano’s (1906–1982) legacy on Cape Ann through arts education and appreciation and by fostering the work of emerging and/or working artists.

Clockwise from top right: Installations at the White-Ellery House by Kathleen Williams; Leslie Lyman & Karen Battles;

EXHIBITIONSExhibitions are designed to showcase the collection, to celebrate Cape Ann’s creativity past and present, and to inform and engage our visitors.

Gloucester: A Community of NeighborhoodsDecember 15, 2015 — April 14, 2016The thirteen quilts in this exhibit, each depicting a Gloucester neighborhood, were designed and cre-ated by participants in the Art Program at Gloucester’s Rose Bake Senior Center under the leadership of artist Juni Van Dyke. The quilts have since been donated to the Museum’s permanent collection.

God Bless Art: The Portraits of Earle MerchantApril 9, 2016 — May 28, 2016The portraits in this exhibition by self-taught artist Earle T. Merchant (1903–1997) included likenesses of such well known local characters as Floyd the Clam Digger and Bill the Cat Nip Man. Forty-six of the portraits were donated to the Museum by the Rockport Art Association & Museum. God Bless Art was made possible by the support of Arthur N. Ryan.

Fanfare: Recent AcquisitionsMay 17, 2016 — December 11, 2016Fanfare spotlighted recent additions to the Museum’s permanent collection that included paintings, prints, sculpture and ceramics. The exhibit also recognized the important roles individuals and private foundations play in helping the Museum’s holdings grow and remain relevant to the community.

Design/Build: The Drawings of Phillips & Holloran, ArchitectsJune 4, 2016 — October 9, 2016Design/Build explored the creative output of Phillips & Holloran, Cape Ann’s longest-lived and most productive architectural firm. The exhibit featured drawings for residences, store fronts, civic buildings and industrial applications dating from the 1890s through the 1960s. Complementing the exhibit was an ambitious schedule of programming designed to broaden audiences’ understanding of how archi-tecture has contributed to Cape Ann’s strong sense of place. Support for this exhibition was provided by Cape Ann Savings Trust and Financial Services, Carpenter & MacNeille Architects and Builders, Inc., Koo de Kir Architectural Interiors, Timberline Enterprises, LLC, Jerry Enos Painting, Inc., Mill River Consulting, Olson Lewis + Architects, Stephen Roberts Holt Architects and Treehouse Design, Inc.

Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument MakerOctober 22, 2016 — March 5, 2017This exhibit showcased the prodigious skills and artistry of Jeremy Adams, one of the most gifted musical instrument makers in New England. It included a clavichord, an organ and four harpsichords, each made by Adams, as well as photographs taken by Paul Cary Goldberg exploring Adams’ work-shop and the remarkable details of his instruments. A selection of furniture and decorative arts also made by Jeremy Adams was on display in the Museum’s Captain Elias Davis House. Support for this exhibition was provided by Jerry and Margaretta Hausman, Hinda Simon, Bettie Cartwright, Carroll and John Cabot, Gregory and Stevie Neal, Robert M. Russell and the Jane Deering Gallery.

Kodachrome Memory: Nathan Benn’s North Shore, 1978December 27, 2016 — February 19, 2017Nathan Benn was a photographer for National Geographic magazine from 1972 to 1991. Kodachrome Memory featured more than 30 images he took in 1978 while on assignment on Boston’s North Shore. Benn’s success at capturing the spirit of Cape Ann is attributed to his keen observational skills and to the fact that he was new to the community, an interloper viewing the area with a fresh and inquisitive eye through the lens of his camera.

PROGRAMS AND EDUCATIONThe Museum’s annual program calendar is designed to complement its collections and special exhibitions with a goal of providing quality Cape Ann centered programming that is engaging, thought provoking and relevant to the lives of today’s diverse audiences. During 2016 members and friends of every age were treated to a robust schedule of gallery talks, exhibi-tion openings, lectures, poetry readings, artist workshops, walking tours, film screenings, dance and musical performances, and more.

P R O G R A M S & E D U C A T I O N

THE NUMBERS• In 2016, 11,500 people participated in the 248 classes and

programs offered to adults and children.• Of these, almost 5,500 participated in the 92 adult educa-

tional and outreach programs offered by the Museum. • An additional 2,500 visitors were introduced to the Museum

and its collections through 480 docent-led tours.• Over 6,000 children and families participated in the more

than 154 programs designed specifically for them.• Students from more than 30 local schools displayed

outstanding student artwork throughout the year in the Museum.

HIGHLIGHTS Special exhibitions provided unique opportunities for program-ming. Design/Build: The Drawings of Phillips & Holloran, Architects inspired a popular lecture series focusing on a brief history of Cape Ann architecture, an introduction to a pioneering female architect Eleanor Raymond, a reintroduction to Beauport/Sleeper McCann architect Halfdan Hanson and an “Old House” overview offered in collaboration with Historic New England. The themes of Architecture and Public Sculpture were added to the summer walking tour offerings. Later in the fall, harpsichord and clavichord music filled the galleries on a regular basis in celebration of the exhibition, Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker.

We continued our collaborative efforts partnering with other organizations and individuals throughout the year to offer the Distinguished Artist/Teacher, Goetemann Artist in Residency lecture with Rocky Neck Art Colony featuring Julie Graham; The Charles Olson Lecture Series featuring Hettie Jones, in partnership with the Charles Olson Society and the Gloucester Writer’s Center; and the third year of the Charles Family Cape Ann Residency with the Copley Society of Art, featuring Nancy Colella. We participated in the new Harbortown Arts Festival and remained a major organizer for the annual Middle Street Walk in December.

We also continued our ongoing work with area nursing homes and senior day centers through the CAM Connections program.

YOUTH AND FAMILY PROGRAMSIn 2016, the Museum welcomed students from local, national and international schools, preschool-aged through college. High-lights of programs designed specifically for children and families included the following:• Participating in the first Cape Ann Reads program, a literacy

building partnership with the four public libraries in Glouces-ter, Rockport, Manchester and Essex.

• Collaborating with local libraries to provide free family activi-ties to promote STEAM and Brain Building initiatives.

• Strengthening our connections to Cape Ann elementary schools through the creation of specialized curriculum focusing on Virginia Lee Burton’s career as an author and illustrator.

• Continuing Young at Art for Head Start—an ongoing partner-ship with Cape Ann’s Pathways for Children to provide more than 30 Museum visits for its students throughout the school year, sponsored by the Brace Cove Foundation.

• Serving as hosts for Gloucester Counts Down to Kindergar-ten, which brings 300 children and families into the Museum every fall to explore our resources and co-hosting Rockport Counts Down to Kindergarten, which does the same for an additional 110 children and families.

• And as we have in past years, taking a leadership role in the Gloucester Public Schools annual Arts Festival and the Middle Street Walk, and participating in the Cape Ann Farm-ers’ Market and the annual Schooner Festival.

A group of school students on a field trip visit the Fitz Henry Lane Gallery.

DOCENT/ASSOCIATE PROGRAMIn 2016, the Cape Ann Museum welcomed its fourth group of docents and associates. Trained by the Museum’s staff and outside specialists, the group included individuals from across the North Shore, each bringing their own strengths and areas of expertise to the Museum. Started in 2008, the docent/associate program has greatly enhanced the Mu-seum and visitors’ experience. Members of the most recent group of docents/associates are noted with an asterisk.

2016 PUBLIC ATIONSThis year the Museum’s newsletter was expanded and rebranded under the name CAM Perspectives. And, in keeping with tradition, a calendar featuring works by the Folly Cove Designers was published, this year with the theme “Birds.”

THE A LFRE D M A NSFIE LD BROOK S SOCIET YAlfred Mansfield Brooks (1870–

1963), long time president and curator of the Cape Ann

Museum, was responsible for assembling what would ultimately become the largest and finest collection of works by marine artist Fitz Henry

Lane (1804 –1865). The AMB Society was established in 2009

to honor the generosity of Robert L. and Elizabeth French and to serve as

an acknowledgement of gratitude to the long line of donors who have shaped the Museum’s collection. The Society recognizes those who have made a donation of art, artifacts or archival materials, or who have provided funds for the purchase or conservation of such at a minimum of $10,000 on or after September 2009.

THE C ATA LIN A DAV IS LEGAC Y SOCIET Y

Members and friends of the Cape Ann Museum value it for many reasons, but all share a common purpose; to sustain it for the long-term. Creating a legacy through planned giving is a way to make this tangible.

Catalina Davis (1854–1932) was one of the Cape Ann Museum’s early and most ardent supporters. During the 1930s, funds bequeathed to the Museum from her estate allowed for the construction of a modern, fireproof building containing a large exhibition gallery (now the Cape Ann Gallery) and an auditorium. Her generosity also resulted in the addition to the permanent collection of two oil paintings by Fitz Henry Lane, numerous pieces of early New England furniture and an array of other historically important objects, books and artwork.

Most importantly, Catalina Davis’ foresight resulted in the creation of the Museum’s first endowment, which to this day continues to benefit the Museum.

Established in 2015, the Catalina Davis Legacy Society recognizes individuals who contribute to the future of the Cape Ann Museum through bequests, trusts and other planned and life income gifts. Membership is extended to all who have made an estate provision for the Museum, regardless of the amount.
