IITA in Africa
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture – Institut international d’agriculture tropicale – www.iita.org
IITA-Benin key facilities: what we offer
• A biodiversity centre: the largest and best curated collection of insects in West Africa, the foundation for biological control and IPM at large
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture – Institut international d’agriculture tropicale – www.iita.org
IITA-Benin key facilities: what we offer
• A bio-pesticide production unit
• Insectaries: mass production of arthropod biological control agents
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture – Institut international d’agriculture tropicale – www.iita.org
IITA-Benin key facilities: what we offer
• An IPM outreach unit: engages in capacity building, participatory technology testing, technology dissemination and impact assessment
• An agro-(socio)-economics unit: with particular focus on value chain analysis, ex-ante and ex-post impact studies for IPM projects, and capacity building

IITA-Benin key facilities: what we offer
• An agro-eco-health platform: with particular focus on linkages between agriculture and human health

• What are the likely benefits for IITA (Benin) working with UIUC
• What are the synergies
• What are the win-win situations

IPM-omics

Population ‘migration’ of M. vitrata based on available data from light traps and host plant surveys: implication for control strategies

Another important application of IPM-omics:
origin of M. vitrata
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture – Institut international d’agriculture tropicale – www.iita.org
What’s the origin of M. vitrata and why do we bother?
M. vitrata M. amboinalis
Population genetic studies are an indispensable tool in modern bio-systematics

On-going collaborative project with AVRDC and icipe:
Exploiting the large diversity of M. vitratanatural enemies in Asia
Nemorilla maculosa (Diptera, Tachinidae)
Therophilus marucae (Hymenoptera, Braconidae)

A. taragamae and MaviMNPV flying together !

Happening right now…
Exotic parasitoid from Asia: Apanteles taragamae Entomopathogenic
Baculovirus MaviMNPv

Model for technology deployment using caged field nurseries
using Sesbania cannabina plots: up to 40 cocoons/sqm; using Tephrosia platycarpa plots: up to 26 cocoons/sqm

Biocontrol and biopesticides in the pipeline……but need IPM-omics (htp sequencing and bioinformatics) to accelerate deployment strategy
Summary of findings
1) SNP and microsatellite tools developed
2) Populations genetic studies support the hypothesis of S-N host-switch migration during rainy season
3) LPB constitutes minimally two different species (based on mitochondrial data)
Recommendations for Biocontrol
1) Endemic zone extends into southern Burkina Faso
2) Biocontrol agents can be released into these areas this far north
3) Aqueous formulations of neemoil and virus (MaviMNPV) spray just as effective as pesticides and in some cases better, needs multi-location validation

Search for innovative solutions…
Rearing methodology with germinating cowpea grains is 25-30x less expensive than standard artificial diet for the same larval output level !!!

…opens up new opportunities for collaboration:
‘cottage industry’ production of beneficial organisms by women groups and/or unemployed youth, creating a steady supply of biological control products and additional household income

Outlook:Strengthening the collaboration with UIUC
Other insects/organisms of agricultural importance (cowpea, but also other crops)
Education materials for ‘cottage industry’ production of beneficial organisms and their deployment in the field
Education materials for agro-eco-health interventions (Buruli ulcer)
