Capability StatementCoastal EngineeringDelta Marine Consultants

Delta Marine ConsultantsDelta Marine Consultants (DMC) was founded in 1978 for the purpose of providing consultancy project management and engineering design services to clients on a worldwide basis The company has expertise in the fields of urban infrastructure large-scale transport infrastructure ports and harbour development and coastal engineering The company holds strong links with the construction industry through its parent company the Royal BAM Group This contributes to the ability to provide solutions to practical problems and to blend innovation with reliability in design

DMC has been rebranded into lsquoBAM Infraconsultrsquo and is working under that name in the home market DMC is still used as a trade name for international projects and referred to as such in this Design Capability Statement

DMC has well over 300 employees working in various offices worldwide The head office is in Gouda (the Netherlands) and apart from several other offices in the Netherlands local offices are also located in Singapore Dubai Jakarta and Perth DMC is or has been active in a great number of other countries on project basis often together with BAM contracting companies

Our Core BusinessCoastal engineering is one of the core expertise areas of DMC The interaction between land and water creates complex environments Coastal areas and river banks have always been important to trade and are therefore vital links in the economic chain

Coastal works just like ports are very much influenced by natural phenomena such as tidal change wave action and extreme weather conditions which is why they call for specialized expertise The fact that DMC has advised a large number of multi-nationals on the optimization of port layouts is proof of our large expertise in this field Our diverse experience is illustrated further in this document

Integrated ApproachThe complex nature of coastal engineering aspects demands an integral approach Starting with the integrated coastal zone management as one of the basic concepts followed in coastal engineering DMC covers the interdisciplinary nature required in most modern projects This is made possible working integrated with all disciplines involved including environmental consultants architects geotechnical experts and other specialists The interaction of the various project requirements is converted into unique integrated solutions

Innovative SolutionsIn order to offer state-of-the-art services DMC is continuously looking at ways to make the designs more cost and time effective The new developments are comprehensively tested in laboratories and prototypes before being patented

One important element in testing and optimizing products forms DMCs own wave flume which enables full flexibility and comprehensive time required for new designs The flume is also utilized for optimizing breakwater and revetment designs in view of functional performance structural stability and competitive solutions

The wave flume has a length of 25m a width of 06m and a height of 10m It is equipped with a fully absorbing piston type spectral wave maker supplied by Edinburgh Designs Ltd

Additionally DMC looks into finding ways to translate societal and environmental themes into technical solutions DMC uses the elements of nature to develop sustainable innovations which can be of added value to social and economic objectives of businesses governments municipalities and individuals around the world Some of our latest innovations are shown on the following pages

EcobeachMillions cubic meters of sand are suppleted each year to maintain coastlines around the world In the Netherlands alone coastlines are yearly maintained with 12 million cubic meters of sand a large expense that increases annually An innovative solution has been developed which stimulates natural accretion on the beach by using drain pipes EcoBeach

Ecobeach is a sustainable passive drainage system that triggers nature to deposit more sand from the foreshore onto the beach The system consists of 2 meter long drainage tubes which are installed just below the beach surface

Ocean FallsUnlike many wave energy converters which do not generate energy at low sea states the Ocean Falls concept retains its efficiency throughout a wide spectrum of sea-states The concept of Ocean Falls relies the resonance principle by adjusting the natural period of the wave generator to the frequency of the sea state which offers a strong interaction between the sea state and the wave generator and therefore results to higher energy output efficiency

And yet the structure is very robust and can also be installed at very exposed locations and possibly even be integrated in a breakwater It thus offers the finesse of wave generation even under calm conditions in combination with the robustness required in highly energetic areas

Tools and Software

In order to provide valuable design input data for our projects and to enable a rapid analysis of various design alternatives DMC uses reliable and state-of-the-art modelling and analysis software packages

As an example our coastal team uses MIKE 21 suites to investigate waves winds and currents on site and to assess erosion and sedimentation risks of coastal and riverine areas and in ports The effects of waves wind and currents on the moored ship behaviour (either single or multiple vessels) can be assessed using TERMSIM or ANSYS Aqwa The latter package can even be used to model the dynamic response of caissons gravity based foundations or any other floating developments For geotechnical assessments among others PLAXIS is used to analyse deformation and stability of soil structures Our structural engineering teams use finite element packages STAADPro and Scia Engineer to analyse and design complex steel and concrete structures These and other modelling and analysis software packages provide insight into the complex conditions and the structural responses which enables DMC to come up with founded integrated infrastructure solutions

In order to visualise our designs and the expected construction sequence and schedule to our clients and to identify possible clashes in early stages DMC has several software suites available for 3D and BIM modelling such as MX Civil 3D ADT Allplan RevitAutocad Navisworks and Viz

International Experience

DMC has been involved in projects on all continents of the world regions include North and South America Africa Asia Middle East Australia and Europe DMC maintains a steadily growing overseas office strategically located in Singapore closely cooperating with DMC branches in the Netherlands and servicing clients in the region independently In 2013 a new DMC branch has opened in Jakarta to serve the increasing number of large projects in the area Most recent branch openings are in Perth Australia and Dubai UAE

All DMC offices work closely together including formation of international project teams to best suit project demands DMC arranges for frequent exchange of staff throughout the organization for training purposes to benefit from agreed work methods and to familiarize with colleagues and cultures to further promote the mutual work spirit

We liaise with skilled partners to complement expertise and local knowledge as required to maximise the benefits for our clients

Key ProjectsKey examples of recent work related to port and harbour engineering are given below

Container Terminal Walvis Bay NamibiaThe Namibian Ports Authority plans to develop a new container terminal which involves extensive land reclamation and dredging activities adjacent to Walvis Bay lagoon ndash an environmentally protected Ramsar site Namport therefore initiated an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to evaluate potential adverse effects of the new container terminal on the Walvis Bay environment during construction and operation

DMC as lead consultant carried out a comprehensive hydrodynamic modelling programme to assess the potential impact of the new terminal on wave conditions flow pattern morphological changes and water exchange between Lagoon and Bay In addition the effects of plumes generated by dredging and landfill activities were assessed for all three development phases of the terminal

Rehabilitation of cooling water outfall QatarDuring a maintenance shutdown in March 2010 diver inspections revealed that the outfall head (T-head diffusor) of a cooling water system was completely lifted of the GRP pipeline At the area around the outlet box the installed scour protection system was found to be partly washed away with a local scour Thyssenkrupp Uhde contracted DMC to propose repairadaptation measures to improve the performance of the system

Xbloc breakwater Aqaba New Port JordanSince 2001 Delta Marine Consultants have been developing and applying an innovative interlocking armour unit designed to protect breakwaters and shores over the long term and in extreme conditions This armour unit called the Xbloc is a simple robust and reliable single layer concrete armour unit without reinforcement

Within the Aqaba New Port project 3000 Xblocs of 15m3 volume are applied Due to the scarcity of rock in the required grading Xbloc was chosen as feasible and economic alternative The Xbloc units were produced at the project area with ready mix concrete from a local concrete plant close to the site

Gorgon LNG terminal North West AustraliaA breakwater is built for the Gorgon LNG terminal in North West Australia The breakwater is armoured by a large number of Xbloc armour units

The production of the Xblocs was carried out by BAM Decorient Indonesia The Xblocs have been produced in the port of Cigading Java and loaded onto barges which transport the Xblocs to Australia The breakwater for the LNG terminal in NW Australia has two purposes it is the causeway leading to the LNG jetty and it provides shelter for the tug berths and MOF
