The BSU Community-Based Projects Programs (CBP) and Land Design Institute (LDI) are co-leading a new Eco-Economic Community Development Corridor (EECDC) project in partnership with the Center for Energy Research Education and Service (CERES) and Building Futures Institute (BFI). It seeks to enhance eco-economic development of the multimodal transportation corridor (railroad and I-69) from Indianapolis to Muncie. The EECDC seeks to be a catalyst that triggers regeneration of prosperity within the Central and East Central Indiana region through transit-oriented development (TOD) and eco-economic development that builds Indiana prosperity in ways that sustain and enhance the health and productivity of the region’s land-based resources and systems. This corridor could be powered by a regional distributed energy network that produces energy, via clean technologies, from local or regional energy sources (animal wastes, urban wastes, wind, solar and so on). All of these efforts have, as a fundamental objective, a holistic approach to community development that improves the overall quality of life.

Fall semester 2007 the three departments of the college agreed to coordinate efforts under the umbrella of Transit Oriented Development (TOD). Using funding provided by the Provost, CAP’s “Emen’s Distinguished Lecture Series” invited professionals with experience in TOD and the opportunities created by transit to improve the overall quality of life of communities.

These speakers gave lectures as part of our traditional “Guest Lecture Series” (available for viewing online at (bsu.edu/cap/calendar). In addition to Monday night lectures they served as studio critics, lecturers in courses, and facilitated workshops with students and faculty. In Indianapolis they met with state legislators, testifi ed at legislative hearings and met with alumni and professional organizations at CAP’s Indianapolis Center.

Three of our signature Study Abroad Programs traveled last year to global destinations of particular signifi cance to our disciplines. CAPAsia, a semester long immersive learning experience, provides an extraordinary opportunity for participants to experience the socially, culturally, and historically different South Asia with the help of a network of scholars, professional, and educators of planning and design in the region. During the summer break; CAPItalia a group of students under the supervision of Kevin Klinger and Tim Gray visited Italy and France and Jason Johnson and Wil Marquez took a group of students for the CAPAmericano experience, visiting Chile, Uruguay and Argentina. Landscape Architecture / As published by Design Intelligence 2008 the landscape architecture undergraduate programs moved up to 4th in its national ranking and the graduate program went from previously unranked to 5th. In the regional rankings the undergraduate program was ranked 1st in the Midwest and the graduate program was ranked 2nd.

Architecture / Graduates of the Department of Architecture, as published by Design Intelligence 2008, rank among the top 8 (surpassed only by Clemson University, Yale University, and the University of Minnesota) on their rate of success in the Pre-Design tests of the Architecture Registration Exams (ARE). This is evidence that our graduates are very strong designers.

Planning / Our Planning program was ranked 13th (nationally) in the category of tuition in the range of $6,500 to $10,000 by Planetizen, and 13th of all national planning programs without a Ph.D. program. Our program was also ranked #7 in the category of most international students.

A team of CAP students working with key regional industry partners designed, digitally fabricated, and assembled an exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Manufacturing Material Effects: Rethinking Design and Making in Architecture – the exhibit featured work from leading thinkers, designers and manufacturers from around the world who participated in the 2007 IMA symposium of the same name organized by Kevin R. Klinger and Branko Kolarevic.

The Institute for Digital Fabrication and A2SX have formed a furniture design collaborative centered around producing new, innovative seating prototypes with minimal material waste. Using digital design and fabrication technologies, the prototypes are designed, optimized structurally and ergonomically, and fabricated using digital information. Led by faculty member William Marquez and architecture student, Jamie Owens, further optimization for this work-in-progress is underway including the effi cient nesting of components to avoid waste material. The remaining material off-cuts from the CNC fabrication are being used to create other accessories, such as occasional tables. In addition, a parametric model is being created to allow for the customization of the seat prototype for each unique customer/user. In September, the fi rst physical seating prototype was displayed at the Broadripple Art Gallery in Indianapolis. In addition, a furniture design juried review was hosted at Ball State’s dFAB facility. The invited jurors were William Marquez, Kevin Klinger, and Joshua Vermillion (Architecture); Reza Ahmadi and Thelma Lazo-Flores (Interior Design); Michael Halbrook (Technology Transfer Offi ce); and Mark Cabrinha (PhD candidate at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute). bsu.edu/cap/facilities
